On Sunday, February 10, 2013, a large EF4 multiple-vortex wedge tornado devastated the cities of West Hattiesburg, Hattiesburg, and Petal, Mississippi. The tornado was one of eight that touched down in southern Mississippi and southwestern Alabama that day. It reached a maximum path width of 0.75 miles (1.21 km) in its path through the Hattiesburg area and reached estimated maximum sustained winds of 170 mph (270 km/h) in Oak Grove neighborhood of West Hattiesburg. It destroyed many structures and impacted University of Southern Mississippi and two high schools (Oak Grove High School and Hattiesburg High School). Mississippi was declared a federal disaster area by President Barack Obama, and a state of emergency was issued by Mississippi Governor Phil Bryant.

The Hattiesburg Zoo (sometimes also called the Kamper Park Zoo) is a small 12-acre (4.9 ha) zoo located within Kamper Park in Hattiesburg, Mississippi, United States. The zoo is operated by the Hattiesburg Convention Commission. As of 2019, the Commission's executive director was Rick Taylor.

The University of Southern Mississippi (Southern Miss or USM) is a public research university with its main campus located in Hattiesburg, Mississippi. It is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools to award bachelor's, master's, specialist, and doctoral degrees. The university is classified among "R1: Doctoral Universities – Very high research activity".Founded on March 30, 1910, the university is a dual campus institution, with its main campus located in Hattiesburg and its other large campus – Gulf Park – located in Long Beach. It has five additional teaching and research sites, including the John C. Stennis Space Center and the Gulf Coast Research Laboratory (GCRL). Originally called the Mississippi Southerners, the Southern Miss athletic teams became the Golden Eagles in 1972. The school's colors, black and gold, were selected by a student body vote shortly after the school was founded. While mascots, names, customs, and the campus have changed, the black and gold colors have remained constant. USM's 17 sport programs participate in NCAA Division I athletics, mainly as members of the Sun Belt Conference.

The Aubrey K. Lucas Administration Building is the most prominent building on the campus of the University of Southern Mississippi. It is named after one of the universities more popular and longest serving Presidents, Dr. Aubrey K. Lucas. The Administration building houses many various offices most importantly the Office of the President. The building was completed in 1930.

The McCain Library and Archives is the chief reserve library for The University of Southern Mississippi. It houses the items in Southern Mississippi's possession that are not available for checkout. Besides being the archives, the building also houses the office of the President Emeritus, and the universities audio visual department. The Archives also house the de Grummond Children's Literature Collection, one of the largest collections of children's literature in the world.

Reed Green Coliseum is an 8,095-seat multi-purpose arena in Hattiesburg, Mississippi, United States. Affectionately referred to by fans and local sportswriters as "The Yurt", it opened on December 6, 1965, and is home to the University of Southern Mississippi (USM) men's basketball team, women's basketball team and women's volleyball team. Prior to the Coliseum, USM's teams played at the USM Sports Arena, a 3,200-seat arena opened in 1949. It is the Hattiesburg area's premier sports and entertainment venue. It is named for Reed Green, who attended the university and went on to serve as its coach and athletics director. Subsequent renovations over the years, which brought larger dressing rooms, officials' areas and a meeting room, for members of the Eagles Club, have kept Green Coliseum one of the area's main events venues with more renovations to follow.It is also used for graduation ceremonies, civic events and concerts. As a concert venue, the Coliseum can seat nearly 9,100. The arena played host to the final show of the Rolling Thunder Revue tour, headed by Bob Dylan, on May 1, 1976.

Pete Taylor Park is a baseball stadium located in Hattiesburg, Mississippi, that is home to the Southern Miss Golden Eagles baseball team.In 2011, Southern Miss announced the expansion of Pete Taylor Park. The plans include adding 1,358 seats and expanding the seating capacity to 4,300. The expansion was completed for the start of the 2012 season.

South of Hattiesburg is Camp Shelby, the largest US National Guard training base east of the Mississippi River, which hosts up to 100,000 National Guardsmen and Reservists annually.
