South Bass Island

Put-In-Bay High School is a public high school on South Bass Island in Put-In-Bay, Ohio. It is the only high school in the Put-In-Bay Schools district. There are around thirty students enrolled at any given time, and they make up the pride of the Put-in-Bay Panthers. With only two Seniors in the Class of 2022, it is one of the smallest public high schools in Ohio. The school fields a co-ed basketball team every year that plays a mostly-junior varsity schedule against a variety of schools in Northwest Ohio. Besides basketball, the school offers other seasonal sports such as volleyball, cross-country, archery, and sailing. All sports are offered to children in grades 7–12. Though the number of students is small, there is no shortage of extracurriculars offered. The school hosts an Environmental Club, a Computer Club, and a Robotics team, as well as a Student Council. Aside from South Bass Island, Put-In-Bay Local School District also covers the Lake Erie Islands of Buckeye Island, Gibraltar Island, Green Island, Mouse Island, Rattlesnake Island, and Starve Island, even though most of these islands are uninhabited.

Put-in-Bay is a resort village located on South Bass Island in Put-in-Bay Township, Ottawa County, Ohio, United States, 85 miles (137 km) west of Cleveland and 35 miles (56 km) east of Toledo. The population was 154 at the 2020 census.The village is a popular summer resort and recreational destination. Ferry and airline services connect the community with Catawba Island, Kelleys Island, Port Clinton, and Sandusky, Ohio. The bay played a significant role in the War of 1812 as the location of the squadron of U.S. naval commander Oliver Hazard Perry, who sailed from the port on September 10, 1813, to engage a British squadron just north of the island in the Battle of Lake Erie.

St. Paul's Episcopal Church is a historic Episcopal church in Put-in-Bay, Ohio, on South Bass Island in Lake Erie. It is the oldest religious structure on the island, believed to be the oldest wooden church still in use in Ohio, and is one of the oldest churches of any construction in continuous use in Ohio. It is located just 3 blocks south of the downtown area of the village of Put-in-Bay, at Catawba Ave and Lakeview Dr.

The Jay Cooke House (also known as Cooke Castle), is a historic summer estate house on Gibraltar Island, an island in the Lake Erie community of Put-in-Bay, Ohio. Built in 1865, it was the summer house and a favorite place of financier Jay Cooke (1821–1905). Since 1925, the former Cooke estate has hosted the Stone Laboratory of Ohio State University, one of the nation's oldest freshwater field research stations. The estate, encompassing the entire 8-acre (3.2 ha) island, was declared a National Historic Landmark in 1966.

Gibraltar Island (or the "Gem of Lake Erie") is an island in Ohio, located within Lake Erie. This small 6.55-acre (0.026 km²) island is just offshore of South Bass Island. It is part of Put-in-Bay Township, Ottawa County, Ohio. The rocky island is named for its resemblance to the Rock of Gibraltar.

Perry's Victory and International Peace Memorial commemorates the Battle of Lake Erie that took place near Ohio's South Bass Island, in which Commodore Oliver Hazard Perry led a fleet to victory in one of the most decisive naval battles to occur in the War of 1812. Located on an isthmus on the island, the memorial also celebrates the lasting peace between Britain, Canada, and the United States that followed the war.

The Crystal Cave is a limestone cave located in Put-in-Bay, Ohio, located on South Bass Island in Lake Erie.In 1887, Gustav Heineman emigrated from Baden-Baden, Germany, to Put-in-Bay, Ohio, where he established a winery. In 1897 he dug a well beneath his winery and discovered a large vug at a depth of 30 feet (10 m). On exploring the cave he found the cave walls covered with extremely large and well-developed tabular crystals identified as celestine, a form of strontium sulfate.The original cave was much smaller than it is today, as much of the celestine was mined for the manufacturing of red fireworks, which get their color from the presence of strontium cations as pyrotechnic colorant. However, Mr. Heineman decided to stop the mining and turn the property into a tourist attraction. Due to the Crystal Cave, the Heineman winery survived prohibition because of tourist revenues. As of 2016, the Crystal Cave is open for tourism, where celestine crystals of up to 3 feet (1 m) in width can be viewed. The crystals form extensive linings on the limestone walls of the 30 foot (10 m) deep cave.

The Battle of Lake Erie, also known as the Battle of Put-in-Bay, was fought on 10 September 1813, on Lake Erie off the shore of Ohio during the War of 1812. Nine vessels of the United States Navy defeated and captured six vessels of the British Royal Navy. This ensured American control of the lake for the rest of the war, which in turn allowed the Americans to recover Detroit and win the Battle of the Thames to break the Indian confederation of Tecumseh. It was one of the largest naval battles of the War of 1812.

Put-in-Bay Airport (FAA LID: 3W2) is a public airport located in Put-in-Bay on South Bass Island in Ottawa County, Ohio, United States. The approach to Runway 21 is complicated by Perry's Victory and International Peace Memorial, which is almost exactly in line with the runway; pilots are asked to respect special procedures to avoid the monument. The airport is located in the center of the southern half of the island. Put-in-Bay's airport is open year-round for arrivals and departures from dawn to dusk. Runways at the Put-in-Bay airport are paved but not lighted, so there are no departures after dusk. There is no fuel service at the Put-in-Bay airport, but fuel may be purchased at Erie–Ottawa International Airport in Port Clinton. The Put-in-Bay airport provides charter services, refreshments (vending), and rest rooms. Credit cards are accepted. The airport is mainly used to bring mail to the island as well as to bring passengers nearby islands and mainland Ohio. It is also home to three air tour operators who provide recreational trips from the airport.The airport received a $22,000 grant in 2021 to provide economic relief funds for costs related to operations, personnel, cleaning, sanitization, janitorial services, debt service payments, and combating the spread of pathogens.

Starve Island is an island of the U.S. state of Ohio located in Lake Erie. The 2-acre (0.81 ha) island is about a mile (1.6 km) south of South Bass Island. In normal weather conditions it is visible for only a mile or two, as some rocks and a few shrubs poking up from the lake, and is the second smallest of the Lake Erie Islands (the smallest is Turtle Island). The island can be seen from the top of Perry's Victory and International Peace Memorial in Put-in-Bay. It is said that the island gets its name from a sailor's fate upon the island following a shipwreck. Variant names for the island include Dinner Island and Glacial Island.The Starve Island Reef is located approximately one mile further south of Starve Island at 41°36′46″N 82°48′56″W. Island and reef are both located in Put-in-Bay Township, Ottawa County, Ohio.

South Bass Island Light is a lighthouse on the southern end of its eponymous island in Lake Erie. It was listed in the National Register of Historic Places on April 5, 1990 and is thought to be the only lighthouse in the United States owned by a university - Ohio State.

Green Island is a small 17-acre (0.07 km²) island of the U.S. state of Ohio, in Lake Erie. It is located approximately three miles southwest of Put-in-Bay. It is part of Put-in-Bay Township, in Ottawa County.
