Amberg

The Upper Palatine Hills (German: Oberpfälzisches Hügelland, also Oberpfälzisches Hügel- und Bergland or Oberpfälzer Bruchschollenland) is a Hercynian range of rolling hills (Hügelland) and valleys running from the Upper Palatine-Bavarian Forest in the (north-)east and the Franconian Jura in the (south-)west. It lies mostly within the Bavarian province of Upper Palatinate, hence the name. The range, which is oriented northwest to southeast, is about 100 kilometres long, but only between 7 and 35 kilometres wide and covers and area of 2,000 km². The best known settlements are (from northwest to southeast) Weiden (Ostrand), Amberg and Schwandorf.

The Ostbayerische Technische Hochschule Amberg-Weiden (OTH-AW) is a state university of applied sciences (UAS), which was founded in 1994 under the name Fachhochschule Amberg-Weiden. At the two locations Amberg and Weiden, over 40 bachelor's and master's degree programs as well as part-time degree programs are offered in four faculties. The name "Ostbayerische Technische Hochschule" is based on an existing cooperation agreement in association with the Ostbayerische Technische Hochschule Regensburg.

The Eh'häusl is an eight-foot-wide hotel in the city of Amberg, in the Upper Palatinate of Bavaria in Germany. According to the operator, the Urban Planning Society of the town of Amberg, it is now regarded as "the smallest hotel in the world." The name of the building, derived possibly from Early New High German Ehalten (for servants) and was probably reinterpreted in the vernacular to marriage house or matrimonial home in the 18th or 19th century. Built in 1728, the 2 metre wide house was sold between young couples to circumvent local laws prohibiting marriage between poor people who did not own their own home.The house was built on an area of approximately 20 square meters with no side walls and is mounted between the two neighboring houses. Though tiny in size the hotel has flat-screen TV, a mini spa, and several other amenities for its guests.

The Electoral Palace (German: Kurfürstliches Schloss) is a Schloss in Amberg. After several large fires in the 17th century, only the south wing (Neues Schloss) remains from the once three-winged palace. It is connected through the fortified bridge Stadtbrille, to the Zeughaus (armory) across the Vils river.It was built from 1417 by Louis III, Elector Palatine, and replaced the Alte Veste, a Gothic building in the town center, as the electoral court. The original building on the north was added with a south wing, a moat and a gatehouse, by Elector Frederick I turning it into a fortress. Its present appearance with a high voluted gable was set in 1603 by Johannes Schoch, who redesigned the Zeughaus with an added tower on the south. On 1738 horse stables were built as a western wing.Having served the Electors of the Palatinate from its construction to the abolition of the Electorate, the castle was home, since the 19th century, first to the Royal Bavarian District office and Revenue office, later the District Office of the Bavarian State Amberg District and from 1972 of the District of Amberg-Sulzbach.

The Gregor-Mendel-Gymnasium (GMG, Gregor Mendel High School) is a national, public gymnasium in Amberg, Bavaria, Germany. It is named after the scientist Gregor Mendel. As of 2006 it has some 950 students, of whom 35% are from the city of Amberg, and 65% from the surrounding district. There are some 60 instructors. The school was founded in 1833 as the Königliche Landwirtschafts- und Gewerbeschule.

The Battle of Amberg, fought on 24 August 1796, resulted in an Habsburg victory by Archduke Charles over a French army led by Jean-Baptiste Jourdan. This engagement marked a turning point in the Rhine campaign, which had previously seen French successes.
