Weston Rhyn

Trehowell Halt was a small railway station located about a mile and a half south of Chirk, just inside the English border south of an overbridge on the minor road between Trehowell and Chirk Bank. It was opened by the Great Western Railway as part of its halt construction programme of the 1930s, aimed at countering emergent competition from bus services. Although the halt is gone the railway is still open today as part of the Shrewsbury to Chester Line.

Weston Rhyn railway station was a minor station on the Great Western Railway's London to Birkenhead main line serving the villages of Weston Rhyn and Preesgweene in England. It had an adjacent signal box and level crossing and immediately to the south were Up & Down Goods Loops. It had originally opened as Preesgweene (or Presgwyn?) and closed for the first time in March 1855. It re-opened as Preesgweene in November 1871 and was renamed Weston Rhyn in February 1935 It closed in 1960 but the railway is still open today as part of the Shrewsbury to Chester Line. After closure the platforms were removed but the station building was converted to a private residence.

The Chirk Viaduct (Welsh: Traphont y Waun) is a Grade II* listed railway viaduct over the River Ceiriog between England and Wales. The viaduct carries the Shrewsbury–Chester line from the Welsh town of Chirk in historic Denbighshire from the north to the English village of Chirk Bank in Weston Rhyn, Shropshire to the south. Chirk Aqueduct lies parallel to the viaduct's east.

Chirk Aqueduct is a 70-foot (21 m) high and 710-foot (220 m) long navigable aqueduct that carries what is now the Llangollen Canal across the Ceiriog Valley near Chirk, on the England-Wales border, spanning the two countries.

Chirk Bank is a small village in Shropshire, England. The industrial town of Chirk is to the north, over the border in Wales, with the B5070 road connecting the two settlements via a bridge (Chirk Bridge) over the River Ceiriog. The larger village of Weston Rhyn is to the south-west and Chirk Bank is part of its civil parish. The hamlet of Gledrid (Welsh: Y Galedryd) is just outside Chirk Bank, near to the A5 road and on the border (the B5070) with the parish of St Martin's. The Llangollen Canal passes by the village. There are three public houses in the vicinity: The Bridge, the Lord Moreton, and the Poachers Pocket.

Chirk Tunnel is a canal tunnel near Chirk, Wales. It lies on the Llangollen Canal, immediately northwards of the Chirk Aqueduct. It is 421 metres (460 yd) long and has a complete towpath inside. The tunnel is designed for a single standard narrowboat, so passing is not possible. The tunnel is straight enough to be able to see if a boat is already inside the tunnel, and boats are required to show a light. Northbound boats must maintain power and momentum in order to push through, due to the shallow, narrow nature of the canal in the tunnel (such that water has little space to pass around the displacement of the boat), and the relatively fast 2 miles per hour (3.2 km/h) southbound current of the canal. The tunnel, the tunnel portals and the canal basin are collectively a Grade II* listed structure.

Chirk railway station (Welsh: Y Waun) serves the town of Chirk, Wrexham County Borough, Wales. The station is on the Shrewsbury to Chester Line 21 miles (34 km) north of Shrewsbury, which is part of the former Great Western Railway mainline route from London Paddington to Birkenhead Woodside. The original 19th-century (grade 2 listed) Chirk / Y Waun station building was demolished in 1987, without consultation, by the local council.Chirk was also the eastern terminus and transfer point for the Glyn Valley Tramway.

Chirkland (Welsh: Swydd y Waun) was a marcher lordship in north-east Wales. It was created in 1282 from parts of Powys Fadog granted to Roger Mortimer de Chirk, third son of Roger Mortimer, 1st Baron Mortimer of Wigmore, who then built Chirk Castle from where the lordship was administered. Chirkland continued to be ruled as a separate lordship until the Laws in Wales Acts 1535–1542. After this time, Chirkland became the Hundred of Chirk in the newly created Denbighshire. Most of the former lordship now lies in the county of Powys. Swydd y Waun was the name of a cantref in the medieval Kingdom of Powys. It contained the commotes of Cynllaith and Nanheudwy.

Chirk War Memorial is a war memorial in the Welsh town of Chirk, now in Wrexham County Borough (until 1974, Chirk was in the historic county of Denbighshire and then in the county of Clwyd until 1996). The memorial stands on a traffic island at the east end of Station Avenue, at its junction Church Street. It became a Grade II* listed building in 1998. It was commissioned as a First World War memorial by Thomas Scott-Ellis, 8th Baron Howard de Walden, tenant at Chirk Castle, and designed and made by the English sculptor Eric Gill. The memorial was unveiled in October 1920 by Lady Howard de Walden. A further inscription was added after the Second World War. The memorial comprises a tapered square obelisk of Portland stone, standing on a low step which curves out to form a platform. The top of each face of the obelisk is carved into a pointed gable at 45-degree angles, with the ridges of the gables intersecting across the top of the memorial to create cross. The south face has a bas-relief carving of a soldier in profile facing east, in greatcoat and helmet, hunched forward over his rifle and bayonet, above the main inscription which reads: "TO THE MEMORY OF THOSE / HABITANTS AND INDWELLERS / OF THE PARISH OF CHIRK / WHO GAVE UP THEIR LIVES / FOR THE CAUSE of THEIR COUNTRY / DURING THE GREAT WAR OF 1914-1919 / THIS MONUMENT WAS ESTABLI-/SHED BY THEIR FELLOWS / OF THE PARISH / IN RIGHTEOUSNESS". The west and east faces are inscribed with the names of the 66 fallen men of the parish, with 33 forenames and surnames on each side. The Anglican parish church of St Mary nearby also houses a Roll of Honour. The north side bears the inscription in Welsh: "ER / ARDDERCHOG / GOFFA / AM / WYRYWAEN / A ROES EU HEINIOES / YN ACHOS EU GWLAD / YN Y RHYFEL MAWR / 1914-1919 / Y GOSODWYD / Y MAEN HWN / GAN EU / CYD BLWYFOLION" ("In / glorious / commemoration / of / the men of Chirk / who gave their lives / in the cause of their country / in the Great War / 1914-1919 / this stone / was erected / by their / fellow parishioners"). Below this, after the Second World, was added "1939-1945/ IN LOVING MEMORY OF" and another 19 names. Around the base of the obelisk, below the main inscriptions, is a further inscription from the Book of Revelation, chapter 19, verse 11, in larger type, starting at the west face and ending on the north face: "AND / IN RIGHTEOUNESS / HE DOTH JUDGE & / MAKE WAR. REV.XIX""

Chirk AAA F.C. is a Welsh football team based in Chirk, Wales. They compete in the Cymru North. They were previously in the Premier division of the Welsh National League since their relegation after one season in the Cymru Alliance.Their reserve team plays in the FAW Reserve League (North East).

Chirk (Welsh: Y Waun) is a town and community in Wrexham County Borough, Wales, 10 miles (16 kilometres) south of Wrexham, between it and Oswestry. At the 2011 census, it had a population of 4,468. Historically in the traditional county of Denbighshire, and later Clwyd, it has been part of Wrexham County Borough since a local government reorganisation in 1996. The border with the English county of Shropshire is immediately south of the town, on the other side of the River Ceiriog. The town is served by Chirk railway station and the A5/A483 roads.

Ceiriog was a rural district in the administrative county of Denbighshire from 1935 to 1974. The rural district was formed by a County Review Order in 1935 from the merger of Chirk and Llansillin Rural districts. The district was named after the Ceiriog Valley. The district contained nine civil parishes: Chirk Glyntraian Llanarmon Dyffryn Ceiriog Llanarmon Mynydd Mawr Llangadwaladr Llangedwyn Llanrhaeadr ym Mochnant Llansantffraid Glynceiriog LlansilinThe rural district was abolished in 1974 by the Local Government Act 1972, with its area becoming part of the district of Glyndŵr, one of six districts of Clwyd.
