Mary Hutchinson Women's Prison, formerly Risdon Women's Prison, an Australian minimum to maximum security prison for females, is located in Risdon Vale, Tasmania. The facility is operated by the Tasmanian Prison Service, an agency of the Department of Justice of the Government of Tasmania. The facility accepts felons convicted under Tasmanian and/or Commonwealth legislation.

Risdon Prison Complex is an Australian medium to maximum security prison for males located in Risdon Vale near Hobart, Tasmania. The facility is operated by the Tasmanian Prison Service, an agency of the Department of Justice of the Government of Tasmania. The facility accepts criminals convicted under Tasmanian and/or Commonwealth legislation. The complex comprises 219 maximum security cells for males; 84 medium security cells for males; and a 38-bed secure mental health unit called the Wilfred Lopes Centre for Forensic Mental Health. A separate 45-bed women's prison, called the Mary Hutchinson Women's Prison, is located adjacent to the Risdon Prison Complex. The complex was formerly known as H.M Prison Risdon.

Geilston Bay (pronounced both "Jeels-ton and "Geels-ton", other pronunciations also possible) is a largely residential suburb of Hobart between Risdon Vale, Shag Bay, and Lindisfarne, in the City of Clarence located on the Eastern Shore of the Derwent River, taking its name from an inlet of that river of the same name. The inlet and locality were sometimes known by the alternative name "Limekiln Bay" on account of lime kilns which operated there between approximately the 1830s and the 1920s, the remains of which remained visible for some decades thereafter; another early name for the Bay was "James's Bay". The present suburb name derives from an early land holding "Geils Town" in the region purchased by Andrew Geils, Commandant of Van Diemen's Land (Tasmania) for a brief period in 1812-1813, who subsequently left his Australian holdings behind when he moved back to Scotland. The nationally significant Late Oligocene (or early Miocene) "Geilston Bay Local Fauna" fossil find originates from this locality. Fossil mammal remains at this site were discovered by limestone quarrying activities in the 1860s and sent to the British Museum in London for further analysis, where they still reside. However there are no surface indications of the location of the site today, which lies buried by landfill under the playing fields of the former Geilston Bay High School.

Geilston Bay High School was a government co-educational comprehensive secondary school located in Geilston Bay, a suburb of Hobart, Tasmania, Australia. Established in 1972, the school catered for students from Years 7 to 10 until its closure in 2013.

East Risdon State Reserve is an IUCN Category II protected area on the eastern shore of the Derwent River in Clarence City, Hobart, Tasmania. It takes its name from the nearby suburb of Risdon. The earliest registration as a protected area was 17 March 1971., and is currently managed by Tasmania Parks and Wildlife ServiceThe rare flowering plant Eucalyptus risdonii is endemic to the area, and the endangered Eucalyptus morrisbyi has the smaller of its two remaining native stands within the reserve. Also found in surveys of the reserve have been Black peppermint, Prickly moses, Silver Wattle, Blackwood, Native daphne (var. obcordata), Dolly bush, Common heath, Golden pea, Spreading wattle, grass, Manna Gum or White Gum, and Blue gumIt encompasses Shag Bay and the northern half of Bedlam Walls. It is a site of note to Aboriginal Tasmanians

The Geilston Bay fossil site is a paleontological site of Late Oligocene (or possibly Early Miocene) age in south-eastern Tasmania, Australia. It lies within the suburb of Geilston Bay which, although it is a part of the municipality (city) of Clarence, is effectively a suburb of Hobart located on the eastern shore of the River Derwent. The Geilston Bay site is important as one of the few of its age to yield fossils of mammals from the Late Paleogene Period (earliest Tertiary); at the time of their redescription in 1975, the mammal (marsupial) fossils were considered the earliest then known from Australia, although that distinction has since been surrendered to fossils from the Murgon fossil site in south-east Queensland, whose fauna—known as the Tingamarra Fauna—is of Early Eocene age. In addition to the somewhat fragmentary mammal bones still in existence, a range of plant macrofossils have also been described from the site, which appear not to have survived. The limestone deposit (in a form known as travertine) in which the fossils occurred was extensively mined (possibly completely) for the production of lime in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, and its location, while still publicly accessible, now lies buried beneath landfill under the playing fields of the former Geilston Bay High School.

Shag Bay is an inlet on the River Derwent near Geilston Bay, Tasmania, and is within the East Risdon State Reserve . The area around Shag Bay contains a number of Aboriginal Tasmanian shell middens. A bone meal fertiliser factory was established in Shag Bay in the early 1900s. In January 1915, its boiler exploded, resulting in two deaths of two people associated with the factory. The brigantine built in 1814 HMS Nelson was towed to Shag Bay in 1920 to be broken up after it finished its use as a coal hulk.

The twelfth Bishop of Tasmania, ordained as bishop and installed on 19 March 2016, is Richard Condie.

On 3 May 1804, a number of Aboriginal Tasmanians were killed by guards of the fledgling British settlement at Risdon Cove, Van Diemen's Land. The events occurred in mysterious circumstances, perhaps as the result of a misunderstanding. Conflicting eyewitness evidence indicated that either three Aboriginals were killed or "a great many were slaughtered and wounded" when a large group came upon the 75–80 colonists there.

Risdon Cove is a cove located on the east bank of the Derwent River, approximately 7 kilometres (4 mi) north of Hobart, Tasmania. It was the site of the first British settlement in Van Diemen's Land, now Tasmania, the island state of Australia. The cove was named by John Hayes, who mapped the river in the ship Duke of Clarence in 1794, after his second officer William Bellamy Risdon. In 1803 Lieutenant John Bowen was sent to establish a settlement in Van Diemen's Land. On the advice of the explorer George Bass he had chosen Risdon Cove. While the site was a good one from a defensive point of view, the soil was poor and water scarce. Lady Nelson anchored at Risdon on the eastern shore of the Derwent River on Wednesday 8 September 1803, five days before the whaler Albion arrived with Lt. Bowen on board. The 49 people aboard the Lady Nelson and Albion made a curious party of soldiers, sailors, settlers and convicts. In 1804 Lieutenant Colonel David Collins arrived in the Derwent from Port Phillip on Ocean. Within a few days he rejected Risdon Cove as a suitable settlement site, for its inadequate source of fresh water, and moved his party across the river to Sullivans Cove. The military and convicts disembarked from Ocean near Hunter Island on 20–21 February 1804 and thus beginning what is now Hobart. Lady Nelson landed the free settlers at New Town Bay on 22 February. One of the first land grants at Risdon Cove was made to Dr William F A I'Anson, the chief surgeon who arrived with Lieutenant-Governor Collins in 1804.
