Geilston Bay fossil site

Geilston Bay High School was a government co-educational comprehensive secondary school located in Geilston Bay, a suburb of Hobart, Tasmania, Australia. Established in 1972, the school catered for students from Years 7 to 10 until its closure in 2013.

Geilston Bay (pronounced both "Jeels-ton and "Geels-ton", other pronunciations also possible) is a largely residential suburb of Hobart between Risdon Vale, Shag Bay, and Lindisfarne, in the City of Clarence located on the Eastern Shore of the Derwent River, taking its name from an inlet of that river of the same name. The inlet and locality were sometimes known by the alternative name "Limekiln Bay" on account of lime kilns which operated there between approximately the 1830s and the 1920s, the remains of which remained visible for some decades thereafter; another early name for the Bay was "James's Bay". The present suburb name derives from an early land holding "Geils Town" in the region purchased by Andrew Geils, Commandant of Van Diemen's Land (Tasmania) for a brief period in 1812-1813, who subsequently left his Australian holdings behind when he moved back to Scotland. The nationally significant Late Oligocene (or early Miocene) "Geilston Bay Local Fauna" fossil find originates from this locality. Fossil mammal remains at this site were discovered by limestone quarrying activities in the 1860s and sent to the British Museum in London for further analysis, where they still reside. However there are no surface indications of the location of the site today, which lies buried by landfill under the playing fields of the former Geilston Bay High School.

Lindisfarne is a suburb of Hobart's Eastern Shore, located approximately 6 kilometres from the City Centre and is part of the municipal City of Clarence.

Shag Bay is an inlet on the River Derwent near Geilston Bay, Tasmania, and is within the East Risdon State Reserve . The area around Shag Bay contains a number of Aboriginal Tasmanian shell middens. A bone meal fertiliser factory was established in Shag Bay in the early 1900s. In January 1915, its boiler exploded, resulting in two deaths of two people associated with the factory. The brigantine built in 1814 HMS Nelson was towed to Shag Bay in 1920 to be broken up after it finished its use as a coal hulk.

Rose Bay is a suburb of the City of Clarence in greater Hobart, capital city of Tasmania, Australia. Rose Bay is a small suburb, making up only approximately 0.9 square kilometres with nearly one fourth of that area (23.2%) being parkland. At the 2016 Census the suburb recorded a population of 1,102 people.

East Risdon State Reserve is an IUCN Category II protected area on the eastern shore of the Derwent River in Clarence City, Hobart, Tasmania. It takes its name from the nearby suburb of Risdon. The earliest registration as a protected area was 17 March 1971., and is currently managed by Tasmania Parks and Wildlife ServiceThe rare flowering plant Eucalyptus risdonii is endemic to the area, and the endangered Eucalyptus morrisbyi has the smaller of its two remaining native stands within the reserve. Also found in surveys of the reserve have been Black peppermint, Prickly moses, Silver Wattle, Blackwood, Native daphne (var. obcordata), Dolly bush, Common heath, Golden pea, Spreading wattle, grass, Manna Gum or White Gum, and Blue gumIt encompasses Shag Bay and the northern half of Bedlam Walls. It is a site of note to Aboriginal Tasmanians

The Lindisfarne Interchange is a Directional T interchange which connects the Tasman Bridge to the Tasman Highway and the East Derwent Highway, on the eastern shore of the River Derwent within Hobart, Tasmania. The Interchange was constructed in 1960 in conjunction with the Tasman Bridge and opened to Traffic on 23 December 1964.The interchange experiences regular congestion, handling in excess of 67,000 traffic movements per day.

The Hobart Bridge was a floating arch bridge that crossed the River Derwent, connecting the eastern and western shores of the city of Hobart, Tasmania, Australia.

SS Lake Illawarra was a handysize bulk carrier of 7,274 tons in the service of the Australian National Line. This ship is known for causing the Tasman Bridge disaster when she collided with pylon 19 of Hobart's giant high concrete arch style Tasman Bridge on the evening of 5 January 1975 at 9.27 pm, resulting in the deaths of 12 people.

Rose Bay High School is a government co-educational comprehensive secondary school located in Rose Bay, a suburb of Hobart, Tasmania, Australia. Established in 1961, the school caters for approximately 650 students from Years 7 to 12. The school is administered by the Tasmanian Department of Education.In 2020, student enrolments were 678. The school principal is Joel Doyle. The school has views of the Derwent River, Mount Wellington, the city of Hobart, and the Tasman Bridge.

The Tasman Bridge disaster occurred on the evening of 5 January 1975, in Hobart, the capital city of Australia's island state of Tasmania, when the bulk carrier Lake Illawarra, travelling up the Derwent River, collided with several pylons of the Tasman Bridge and caused a large section of the bridge deck to collapse onto the ship and into the river below. Twelve people were killed, including seven crew on board Lake Illawarra, and the five occupants of four cars which fell 45 m (150 feet) after driving off the bridge. Hobart was cut off from its eastern suburbs, and the loss of the road connection had a major social impact. The ship’s master was officially penalised for inattention and failure to handle his vessel in a seamanlike manner.
