It is a tributary to Heads Creek.The stream headwaters arise at 38°21′12″N 90°35′19″W at an elevation of approximately 750 feet. The confluence with Heads Creek is at 38°25′00″N 90°35′03″W at an elevation of 443 feet. The stream passes under Missouri Route 30 about one mile before it enters Heads Creek. Dowling Creek derives its name from a local family.

The source area is at 38°19′59″N 90°32′03″W and the confluence is at 38°25′20″N 90°35′19″W.Heads Creek has the name of James Head, a pioneer citizen.

At 927 feet (283 m) above sea level, High Ridge is the second-highest point in Jefferson County, second only to Sun Ridge, north of Hillsboro, according to data from the House Springs/Hillsboro 7.5 minute topographic quadrangles. The Beaumont Scout Reservation, a property of the Greater St. Louis Area Council, Boy Scouts of America, is 4 miles (6 km) north of High Ridge.
