East Gloucester Square Historic District

The North Shore Art Association of East Gloucester, Massachusetts is one of the oldest art associations in the United States. Founded in 1922, it was the gathering place of some of the great American artists of the 20th century. Childe Hassam, Emile Gruppe, Harry Aiken Vincent, Paul Strisik, Fredrick Mulhaupt, Winslow Homer and many others were early members of the NSAA. Other members include Louise Herreshoff.

Gloucester Marine Railways (established 1859) is one of the oldest continuously operated shipyards in the U.S. And is located on the northern tip of Rocky Neck in Gloucester, Massachusetts.Originally an extension of the Dodd & Tarr Fisheries, the railways at this site were constructed in 1859 on the northernmost tip of Rocky Neck. Up until the 1970s the marine railways used a steam engine to haul vessels, the gears of this steam engine were built at the same factory that built the motor for the USS Monitor, the Civil War battleship. In 1874 the site was given the name "Rocky Neck Marine Railways Association" by the Tarr brothers after they took over the firm of Dodd & Tarr. The railways were used to maintain the Gloucester fishing fleet of schooners that fished the water of the Grand Banks. Now known as Gloucester Marine Railways, the shipyard has maintained and repaired thousands of fishing, commercial, and pleasure boats. Large wooden schooners are still commonplace here. A modern Travelift has been installed but the original railways are still in operation to this day. The site was used as a location in the shooting of the 2000 film The Perfect Storm.

Adventure is a gaff rigged knockabout schooner. She was built in Essex, Massachusetts, USA, and launched in 1926 to work the Grand Banks fishing grounds out of Gloucester. She is one of only two surviving knockabout fishing schooners – ships designed without bowsprits for the safety of her crew. Adventure was declared a National Historic Landmark in 1994, underwent a substantial restoration in 2012, and sails today in the tourist trade out of Gloucester.

The Fitz Henry Lane House is a historic house at 8 Harbor Loop Road, on the harbor side of Rogers Street in Gloucester, Massachusetts. The three-story stone Gothic Revival building was designed and built in 1849 by the artist Fitz Henry Lane, and was his home until his death in 1865. The building now sits in a municipal park, and has a commanding view of the harbor.The house was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1970. At that time, it was known as the "Fitz Hugh Lane House," but the Register changed the name in 2010.

The Webster-Lane House is a historic house in Gloucester, Massachusetts. The two-story wood-frame Greek Revival house was built sometime before 1845, when it first appears on city maps. It was occupied by Nathaniel Webster, a hotel proprietor and ice dealer, between at least 1851 and 1860. It was also occupied, from at least 1869 until 1900, buy Samuel R. Lane, a major merchant and shipper of fish products. Some of the house's Greek Revival features, most notably its columned porch, are unique in the city.The house was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1996.

Our Lady of Good Voyage Church is a historic Roman Catholic church at 136-144 Prospect Street and 2-4 Taylor Street in Gloucester, Massachusetts. The first church on the site was built in 1892 to serve a large Portuguese immigrant population that came to Gloucester to work in the fishery. That church burned in 1914, and this Spanish Revival building, designed to resemble the Santa Maria Madalena church in the Azorean community of Madalena on the island of Pico. The church also includes one of the oldest sets of full carillon bells in the United States.The church was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1990.

The Battle of Gloucester was a skirmish fought early in the American Revolutionary War at Gloucester, Massachusetts on August 8 or 9, 1775. Royal Navy Captain John Linzee, commanding the sloop-of-war HMS Falcon, spotted two schooners that were returning from the West Indies. After capturing one schooner, Linzee chased the second one into Gloucester Harbor, where it was grounded. The townspeople called out their militia, captured British seamen sent to seize the grounded schooner, and recovered the captured ship as well. The skirmish was one of a series of actions that prompted a retaliatory expedition by Royal Navy Captain Henry Mowat in October 1775. The major event of his cruise, the Burning of Falmouth, was cited by the Second Continental Congress when it established the Continental Navy.

Fort Defiance was a fort that existed from 1794 to after 1865 on Fort Point in Gloucester, Massachusetts. The location protecting the inner harbor was also called Watch House Point.

The Gloucester Lyceum (1830-1872) of Gloucester, Massachusetts, was an association for "the improvement of its members in useful knowledge, and the advancement of popular education." It incorporated in 1831.From the 1830s through at least the 1860s, the Lyceum arranged lectures from notables such as: Ralph Waldo Emerson, Oliver Wendell Holmes Sr., "the two Everetts, Choate, Sumner, Rantoul, Winthrop, Colfax, Greely, ... Parker, Curtis, Phillips, Bayard Taylor, Dr. Holland, Chapin, Starr King, Hillard, ... Beecher, Giles, Gough, Dr. Hayes, the Arctic explorer, Burlingame, ... Alger, Whipple, Murdoch, Vanderhoff, Bancroft, and Dana." From 1830, "meetings were held in Union Hall ... until 1844 when the Murray Institute was used for one season prior to the occupancy of the Town Hall."In 1854 "the Lyceum opened its library on Wednesday and Saturday afternoons and evenings, with 1,400 volumes. It was located in the eastern parlor of the residence of F. G. Low on what was then the corner of Spring and Duncan Streets." Patrons could use the library for $1 per year; the fee was waived for those unable to afford it. In 1863 the library moved to Front Street; the building burned down in 1864. Thereafter it occupied rooms on Middle Street (in the Baptist church), and later on Front Street (in the Babson block). Much of the funding for the library came from "Samuel E. Sawyer, a Boston merchant, but a native of Gloucester."The Lyceum became the Gloucester Lyceum and Sawyer Free Library under a new charter in 1872.

The Folly Cove Designers were a mid-20th-century group of American artists block printing in Gloucester, Massachusetts, on Cape Ann. Their blocks were made of linoleum, and they primarily printed on fabric.

Cape Ann Museum is an art and historical museum located in Gloucester, Massachusetts. Its collection and programming focuses on the artists and art colonies of Cape Ann, including the Rocky Neck Art Colony and the Folly Cove Designers. The museum's collection also features objects from Gloucester's fishing and maritime history, and granite quarrying history.
