Lewis Mill Complex is a historic grist mill complex located at Jefferson, Frederick County, Maryland. The complex consists of seven standing structures, a house foundation, and the remains of an earlier millrace. It centers on an early 19th-century three-story brick mill structure with a gabled roof. The mill complex served German immigrant farmers in Middletown Valley between 1810 and the 1920s. It was rehabilitated in 1979-1980 for use as a pottery shop. Also in the complex are a stuccoed log house and log springhouse built about; a frame wagon shed and corn crib structure and frame barn dating from the late 19th century; and early 20th century cattle shelter and a frame garage.It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1982.A trombe wall was installed on the south wall of the mill in 1980 to heat the business and living quarters. Solar panels were installed on outbuildings in 2011.

Bennies Hill Road Bridge is an iron bowstring arch bridge over Catoctin Creek near Middletown, Maryland, United States. It is one of two remaining bridges of its type in Maryland that remain in their original locations. The bridge was restored in 2009.

Broad Run is an unincorporated community in Frederick County, Maryland, United States. Broad Run is located on Maryland Route 383, 4.5 miles (7.2 km) southeast of Middletown.

Shafer's Mill is a house near Middletown, Maryland, built in the early 19th century. The Federal style house was built for John Shafer, Jr., and was occupied after his death by his son, Peter. The Shafers operated four mills in the Middletown area. The house, however, was never operated as a mill.

The George Willard House, also known as New Freedom Spring, is a Federal style house with Greek Revival details near Jefferson, Maryland. Built about 1818 for farmer and tanner George Willard, the house was altered by Willard's son after 1845 with Greek Revival remodeling.The George Willard House was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1993.

Jefferson is an unincorporated community and census-designated place (CDP) in Frederick County, Maryland, United States. As of the 2020 census the town had a population of 2,235 (which includes the widespread area of the town's zip code, not Jefferson proper). Jefferson was established in 1774 and incorporated as a town in 1831. However, a year later, in 1832, the citizens of the town decided that municipal government was unnecessary, and dis-incorporated the town, which has been unincorporated since then.

Petersville is an unincorporated community in Frederick County, Maryland, United States. Petersville is located at the junction of Maryland routes 79 and 180, 1.3 miles (2.1 km) northeast of Rosemont.

Burkittsville is a historic village in Frederick County, Maryland, United States. The village lies in the southern Middletown Valley along the eastern base of South Mountain. Burkittsville is a residential area with an economy based in agriculture and tourism. The village was the scene of the Battle of Crampton's Gap, part of the Battle of South Mountain during the Maryland Campaign of the Civil War on September 14, 1862. Burkittsville was also made a subject of national attention when it was used as the setting of the 1999 horror film The Blair Witch Project. Nearby attractions include the Gathland State Park and the Appalachian Trail. The population was 151 as of the 2010 census.

The Burkittsville Historic District comprises the small town of Burkittsville, Maryland. Located at a crossroads in western Frederick County, the town is a consistent collection of early 19th-century Federal style houses mixed with a few Victorian style houses that has remained virtually unchanged since 1900. The town is surrounded on three sides by an open, farmed landscape, and nestles against South Mountain on its western side.The town was involved in a number of Civil War actions, including the Battle of Crampton's Gap in 1862. The Burkittsville Historic District was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1975.

The Henry Smeltzer Farmstead is a historic home and farm complex located near Middletown, Frederick County, Maryland, United States. It includes a two-story six-bay brick farmhouse dating to about 1832, a frame bank barn ruin, and several rusticated concrete block silos. A concrete block slaughter house, weighing house well house and holding pens complete the complex, which was associated in the early and mid-twentieth century with Main's Meats in Middletown. The house is built into the hillside as a "bank house", with its cellar above grade on the south side. The front and rear elevations feature porches across their widths.The Henry Smeltzer Farmstead was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2010.

On May 20, 1958 a Vickers Viscount airliner operating Capital Airlines Flight 300 was involved in a mid-air collision with a United States Air Force T-33 jet trainer on a proficiency flight in the skies above Brunswick, Maryland. All 11 people on board the Viscount and one of the two crew in the T-33 were killed in the accident. Flight 300 was the second of four fatal crashes in under two years involving Capital Airlines Viscounts; the others were Flight 67 (April 1958), Flight 75 (May 1959), and Flight 20 (January 1960). An investigation of the accident concluded that the pilot in command of the T-33 failed to see and maintain a safe distance from other air traffic.

Middletown Valley, also historically known as Catoctin Valley, is a valley in western Frederick County in the state of Maryland.
