Lower Denford

The River Dun (historically known as Bedwyn Brook) is a tributary of the River Kennet, flowing through Wiltshire and Berkshire in England. Its main source is in the parish of Great Bedwyn, Wiltshire and it flows 16 kilometres (10 mi) in a northeasterly direction into Berkshire. It discharges into the Kennet at Hungerford, which has a smaller average flow and width upstream of that point. The Dun valley is an important transport route through the high chalklands between the London Basin to the east and the Vale of Pewsey to the west. It is the route by which the Kennet and Avon Canal (linking London and Bristol) enters the Thames basin from the Vale of Pewsey, crossing the watershed with the aid of the Bruce Tunnel and Crofton Pumping Station. The later Reading to Plymouth railway linking London and the south-west also follows the valley. The Dun has two named tributaries: the Froxfield Stream joins on the left between Little Bedwyn and Hungerford, and the Shalbourne Stream on the right above Hungerford. During or after the building of the Kennet and Avon Canal in the late 18th century, the Shalbourne was diverted into it. In 2000 the stream was returned to its original course, rejoining the Dun via a culvert under the canal.

Dun Mill Lock is a lock on the Kennet and Avon Canal, near Hungerford, Berkshire, England. The lock has a rise/fall of 5 ft 8 in (1.73 m).It is a grade II listed building.

On 11 December 1876, Inspector Joseph Drewitt and PC Thomas Shorter were murdered near Hungerford in Berkshire, United Kingdom. The officers were in the area on unrelated business and happened upon brothers Henry and Francis Tidbury, who had been game poaching. The brothers beat and shot the officers to death. Henry and Francis were arrested the following morning. They were tried at Reading in February 1877, and were found guilty of both murders. They were hanged at Reading Jail on 12 March 1877.

The estate lies near to the A4 road, and is located approximately 1.5 miles (2.4 km) north-east of Hungerford. Denford House was extended in 1832 for George Henry Cherry who bought it from William Hallett Esq the original owner, being designed by the architect, Jeffery Wyattville. It was the home of Apsley Cherry-Garrard, the Antarctic explorer. Between 1967 and 2002, the building housed Norland College. In 2002 Denford Park was purchased by Faisal bin Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud and is the location of his Denford Stud.
