Caerleon railway station

Caerleon (; Welsh: Caerllion) is a town and community in Newport, Wales. Situated on the River Usk, it lies 5 miles (8 km) northeast of Newport city centre, and 5.5 miles (9 km) southeast of Cwmbran. Caerleon is of archaeological importance, being the site of a notable Roman legionary fortress, Isca Augusta, and an Iron Age hillfort. Close to the remains of Isca Augusta are the National Roman Legion Museum and the Roman Baths Museum. The town also has strong historical and literary associations: Geoffrey of Monmouth elevated the significance of Caerleon as a major centre of British history in his Historia Regum Britanniae (c. 1136), and Alfred Lord Tennyson wrote Idylls of the King (1859–1885) while staying in Caerleon.

Isca, variously specified as Isca Augusta or Isca Silurum, was the site of a Roman legionary fortress and settlement or vicus, the remains of which lie beneath parts of the present-day suburban town of Caerleon in the north of the city of Newport in South Wales. The site includes Caerleon Amphitheatre and is protected by Cadw. Headquarters of the Legion "II Augusta", which took part in the invasion under Emperor Claudius in 43, Isca is uniquely important for the study of the conquest, pacification and colonisation of Britannia by the Roman army. It was one of only three permanent legionary fortresses in later Roman Britain and, unlike the other sites at Chester and York, its archaeological remains lie relatively undisturbed beneath fields and the town of Caerleon and provide a unique opportunity to study the Roman legions in Britain. Excavations continue to unearth new discoveries; in the late 20th century a complex of very large monumental buildings outside the fortress between the River Usk and the amphitheatre was uncovered. This new area of the canabae was previously unknown.

Saint Cadoc's Hospital (Welsh: Ysbyty Sant Cadog) is a mental health facility located in Caerleon on the northern outskirts of the city of Newport, Wales. It is managed by the Aneurin Bevan University Health Board.

Caerleon Endowed School, (also known as The Endowed School, Caerleon, Caerleon Charity School, Williams Charity School and Caerleon Junior School) dates from 1724. At that point, the house was a junior school that was funded by a bequest from Charles Williams. The school became part of the state education system in 1948 under the 1944 Education Act. The school was designated a Grade II* listed building in 1951.The bequest was for "30 boys and 20 girls of the poorer sort", but the trustees reduced this to 20 boys and 10 girls. From 1724 to 1948 the school had only nine headmasters. The left and right wings of the buildings included houses for the school master and school mistress respectively.John Newman, in his Gwent/Monmouthshire volume of the Pevsner Buildings of Wales series, describes the school as "educational bounty on an exceptional scale for the 18th century". The layout (a half H) become a model for later schools in Wales.

St Cadoc's Church is a Church in Wales church located in Caerleon, Newport, Wales and is Grade II* listed. It is one of many buildings associated with the travels of St Cadoc. Caerleon is the historically important site of the Roman legionary fortress of Isca Augusta. St Cadoc's Church stands over the principia (headquarters), where the legionary standards were kept and statues of the Roman emperors venerated. The earliest surviving part of the church dates back to just after the kingdom of Glywysing was overrun by the Normans during the twelfth century and is thought to be the work of Hywel ap Iowerth, who was also the founder of the Cistercian Llantarnam Abbey. The current church is in the Perpendicular style, which was fashionable in the fifteenth century. The tower, which stands at the southwest corner of the church, has a lower stage that was probably part of the original Norman church, incorporating twelfth/thirteenth century lancet windows. The church features a series of impressive stained-glass windows depicting the life of Christ and symbolising the faith and devotion of the saints associated with Caerleon. St Cadoc's Church has been designated as Grade II* listed since 1951, as a centrepiece of the village with a fine medieval tower.

Caerleon Comprehensive School (Welsh: Ysgol Gyfun Caerllion) is an 11–18 mixed, English-medium community Secondary School and Sixth Form in Caerleon, Newport, Wales.The school was ranked 6th in the WalesOnline Best Secondary Schools in Wales 2018 awards, and was given the title of best school in the area.

Caerleon Roman Fortress and Baths encompass the archaeological ruins and sites of the Legionary Fortress of Isca Augusta spread across the town of Caerleon, near the city of Newport, South Wales. Notable for being one of only three permanent legionary fortresses from Roman Britain (the others being York and Chester), Caerleon has provided a unique opportunity to study the archaeology of a Roman Legionary fortress, less affected by the medieval and subsequent urban activity of most such fortresses. Having attracted the attention of eminent archaeologists throughout the 20th century it now has four major public archaeological venues, including the museum run by Cadw, called 'Caerleon Roman Fortress and Baths' (Welsh: Caer a Baddonau Rhufeinig Caerllion), featuring the excavated fortress bath-house. Also open to the public is the most complete excavated amphitheatre in Britain, a series of barracks and the National Roman Legion Museum. The fortress and its surrounding civil settlement have been the subject of continuing major archaeological investigations into the 21st century.

The National Roman Legion Museum (Wales) (Welsh: Amgueddfa Lleng Rufeinig Cymru) is a museum in Caerleon, near Newport, south-east Wales. It is one of three Roman sites in Caerleon, along with the Baths museum and the open-air ruins of the amphitheatre and barracks. It is part of the wider network of Amgueddfa Cymru – Museum Wales.

The Afon Lwyd or Afon Llwyd (English: 'grey river') is a 13-mile (21 km) long river in south-east Wales which flows from its source northwest of Blaenavon, through Abersychan, Pontnewynydd, Pontypool, Llanfrechfa and Cwmbran before flowing, at Caerleon, into the River Usk, which subsequently flows into the Bristol Channel to the south of Newport. The river was severely affected by pollution from industry and mine discharge, and fly tipping, but during the 1980s efforts were made to improve water quality and improve fish stocks. To aid this, the Environment Agency Wales built a fish ladder at Pontymoile in 2010 enabling fish to ascend past the weir there. By late 2011 it was claimed that the river was in its cleanest state since medieval times.Historically the river has also been known as the Torfaen – meaning 'breaker of stones' – which gives some indication of the force of the river during surges. Although this name is no longer in use for the river, it is still in common use as the name for the local authority, Torfaen County Borough Council.

The Mynde (Welsh: Y Mynde) is a historic site and property located in Caerleon on the northern outskirts of the city of Newport. The town is the historic site of the Isca Augusta Roman Fortress.

The Caerleon Arts Festival (Welsh: Gwyl Celf Caerllion) is a yearly arts, literature and entertainment event in the town of Caerleon, near Newport, Wales. It is held in July, setting up over a week period, with a main weekend hosting the headline events. The 2019 festival concluded on 13 and 14 July.

Newport Racecourse, also known as Caerleon Racecourse, was a horse racing venue located at Caerleon, near Newport, Wales which staged National Hunt racing from the 1840s until its closure in 1948. The earliest known horse race meeting at Caerleon took place in 1845, although official results are not found until 1852. After 1854 no further racing took place in the area until the Llangibby and Tredegar Hunt staged meetings there in the 1880s and 1890s, usually in November. On 15 November 1899 the course was referred to as Newport for the first time, and it continued to host meetings in May and November each year until 1928, with a gap from 1913 to 1919 due to World War I. The May meeting was discontinued after the 1928 staging, leaving Newport with only one meeting in November until the start of World War II. When Newport resumed racing after the war, fixtures increased. Eleven days were scheduled for the 1946–47 season although a number were cancelled due to bad weather. In 1947–48 eight days were scheduled and 30 March 1948 the course staged the Welsh Grand National for the only time, but the fixture held on 15 and 17 May 1948 proved to be the final National Hunt meeting held at Newport. In 1949 some pony racing was held at the course, but financial problems meant that no further racing of any kind took place at Newport after that year.The course hosted the International Cross Country Championships in 1906, 1911, 1921, 1927 1933 and 1951.The land now forms parts of Caerleon Golf Course and Caerleon Comprehensive School.
