Balsham Wood is a 35 hectare biological Site of Special Scientific Interest south of Balsham in Cambridgeshire.This site has one of the last surviving areas of ash and maple woodland on chalky boulder clay. It has diverse flora, including the rare oxlip and a variety of shrubs, such as dogwood. Open grassy rides provide additional habitats.The site is private land with no public access.

Balsham is a rural village and civil parish in the county of Cambridgeshire, England, which has much expanded since the 1960s and is now one of several dormitory settlements of Cambridge. The village is south east of the centre of Cambridge beyond the A11 road and near Newmarket and Haverhill where many residents work and shop. At the 2011 census, Balsham parish had a population of 1,591.

The Cambridgeshire Lodes are a series of man-made waterways, believed to be Roman in origin, located in the county of Cambridgeshire, England. Bottisham, Swaffham Bulbeck, Reach, Burwell, Wicken and Monks Lodes all connect to the River Cam, while Soham Lode connects to the River Great Ouse. All have been navigable historically, but some are no longer officially navigable. Bottisham Lode was navigated throughout the 19th century, and although the flood gates at its mouth were replaced in 2001, it carries a "No unauthorised vessels" notice. Swaffham Bulbeck Lode has been rendered unnavigable by the removal of the lower lock gates, and the replacement of the upper lock gates with a guillotine gate which provides little headroom. Reach Lode is quite deep, as a result of the surrounding land sinking, and the banks being built up. The lower gate of the entrance lock has been replaced by a guillotine gate, enabling boats up to 63 feet (19 m) long to use it. Burwell Lode is a tributary of Reach Lode, and is another deep lode. Barges were built and maintainted at Burwell until 1936, and it was used commercially until 1963, when carriage of sugar beet ceased. Wicken Lode is another tributary of Reach Lode, and was important for the carriage of peat and sedge. It runs through Wicken Fen, one of the oldest nature reserves in England, as the National Trust bought their first part of it in 1899. Soham Lode is more recent than most, probably dating from the 1790s. It ran by Soham Mere, a large inland lake which was drained in the late 18th century. In 2007 a strategy plan considered options for the management of the lodes which included rebuilding most of them at a lower level, but concluded that maintaining the banks at the existing level was a better long-term solution.

In the folklore of Cambridgeshire, the Shug Monkey is a creature that shares features of a dog and monkey, which reportedly haunted Slough Hill Lane (a street that leads from the village of West Wratting to nearby Balsham). The creature, believed to have the body of a jet-black shaggy sheepdog and the face of a monkey with staring eyes, was believed to be a supernatural ghost or demon. Local writer and broadcaster James Wentworth Day, who first related stories of the Shug Monkey in Here Are Ghosts and Witches (1954), described it as a curious variation of Black Shuck, while local folklorist Polly Howat suggests that both share common origins in Norse mythology.According to folklorist Polly Howat, sightings of the Shug Monkey have not been reported since before World War II.

Rivey Hill is a hill overlooking Linton in Cambridgeshire, England (grid reference TL567480). At 367 feet (112 m) it is the highest point for several miles around. The hill has a steep slope leading down to Linton and a prominence of 69 feet (21 m). The highest point is on private land but a bridleway from Linton crosses near the top. A watertower on the hill identifies it when seen from a distance. The ascent of the hill is the start of a circular walk, detailed in Jarrold's Walks in Cambridgeshire, which goes north from the top to a Roman Road, follows this over the 312 feet (95 m) Hildersham Hill for 2 miles (3.2 km), then descends to Hildersham and returns along the valley of the River Granta to Linton.

West Wratting is a village and civil parish 10 miles southeast of Cambridge in Cambridgeshire. At 390 feet (120 m) above sea level, it can claim to be one of the highest villages in Cambridgeshire. The parish covers 3,543 acres in south east Cambridge, a thin strip, less than two miles wide, stretching from the London to Newmarket road to the border with Suffolk. Much of its western border follows the Fleam Dyke. It is bordered by Weston Colville to the north and east, and by Balsham and West Wickham to the south.

Caxton and Arrington was a rural district in Cambridgeshire, England, from 1894 to 1934. It was formed in 1894 under the Local Government Act 1894, covering the area of the previous Caxton rural sanitary district, save for the Huntingdonshire parishes of Great Gransden and Yelling, which were placed in the St Neots Rural District; to which was added Graveley from St Neots RSD. It therefore included the parishes of Arrington, Bourn, Caldecote, Caxton, Croxton, Croydon, East Hatley, Elsworth, Eltisley, Gamlingay, Graveley, Great Eversden, Hardwick, Hatley St George, Kingston, Knapwell, Little Eversden, Little Gransden, Longstowe, Orwell, Papworth Everard, Papworth St Agnes, Tadlow, Toft, and Wimpole.In 1934 under a County Review Order, it was abolished, and its area divided between Chesterton Rural District and the new South Cambridgeshire Rural District.

Linton was a rural district in Cambridgeshire, England, from 1894 to 1934. It was formed in 1894 under the Local Government Act 1894, covering the area of the previous Linton rural sanitary district, save for the Essex parish of Bartlow End, which was placed in the Saffron Walden Rural District. It included the parishes of Babraham, Balsham, Bartlow, Carlton, Castle Camps, Duxford, Great Abington, Hildersham, Hinxton, Horseheath, Ickleton, Linton, Little Abington, Pampisford, Sawston, Shudy Camps, West Wickham, West Wratting, Weston Colville, and Whittlesford.In 1934 under a County Review Order, it was abolished, and its area merged with other districts to form the South Cambridgeshire Rural District.

Linton is a village and civil parish in Cambridgeshire, England, on the border with Essex. The village is approximately 8 miles (13 km) southeast from the city and county town of Cambridge. The A1307 passes through the village. The civil parish population at the 2011 Census was 4,525.

Furze Hill is a 5.8-hectare (14-acre) biological Site of Special Scientific Interest in three nearby areas east of Hildersham in Cambridgeshire.The site has steep banks of glacial deep sandy gravel, and is one of the few examples of a sandy habitat in the county. There are several rare plants, such as hoary cinquefoils, pasque flowers and maiden pinks.The site is private land with no public access.
