The British Horological Institute (BHI) is the representative body of the horological industry in the United Kingdom. It was founded by a group of clockmakers in 1858, and has its current premises at Upton Hall in Nottinghamshire, which includes a museum of clock history.

It also houses the Museum of Timekeeping consisting of a substantial collection of clocks, watches and also a library. The Museum is open to the public during seasonal summer opening hours, for special events and for pre-booked Group tours.

Upton is a small village in Nottinghamshire, England, 2 miles (3.2 km) east of Southwell, 5 miles (8.0 km) west of Newark and 3 miles (4.8 km) south of Hockerton; it lies on the A612 Nottingham-Newark road. In 1889, the village was described as sitting on a bend in the main road, "on the summit of a hill which commands a fine view of the Trent Valley... . The church, which is a prominent feature in the landscape, has a substantial Perpendicular tower crowned by eight pinnacles, and having in the centre a lofty master pinnacle which rises above its neighbours, and so adds materially to the effect."The village had a population of 425 at the 2011 census. The parish church of St Peter and St Paul is 13th century, built in the Perpendicular style. The tower of the church was also used as a dovecote. There is also a village hall and a public house (The Cross Keys). It is also the home of the British Horological Institute based at Upton Hall. The Clock House, a tea room, is located next to the Hall. What once was the village shop is now a private house. Upton Mill was a wooden post mill built c. 1814. Still in use in 1905 the body of the mill had gone by 1911, the roundhouse being re-roofed and retained as a store.

The Hockerton Housing Project is a small community of five earth sheltered homes on the outskirts of Hockerton, Nottinghamshire, UK. The houses were designed by ‘green’ architects Professor Brenda Vale and Dr Robert Vale. Low carbon living is facilitated through the use of renewable energy, the water system, food grown on site, and the community's approach to work and transport.The homes were completed in September 1998 after three years of planning and 18 months of construction, at a cost of about £65,000. Two homes have since changed ownership on the open property market.

Hockerton is a village and civil parish in Nottinghamshire. It is 2 miles from the town of Southwell on the A617 between Newark and Mansfield. Fewer than 60 houses are situated around the church, the Spread Eagle pub and village hall. The population at the 2011 Census was 146. The local properties range from the carbon neutral housing of the Hockerton Housing Project to converted barns, 1960s and 1970s housing together with much older houses and a 19th-century Rectory. The parish church of St Nicholas is Norman with an aisleless nave and a 14th-century chancel. Part of the village contains Hockerton Housing Project. The Hockerton Housing Project is the UK's first earth sheltered, self-sufficient ecological housing development. A group of residents formed an Industrial and Provident Society (IPS) called Sustainable Hockerton Limited in 2009. The Society has installed a wind turbine that generates electricity equal to that used by the village. Any surplus is distributed in the parish to promote sustainable development. The place-name Hockerton seems to contain an Old English word for a hill, hocer, + tun (Old English), an enclosure; a farmstead; a village; an estate.., so 'hill or hump settlement'.

Southwell Racecourse ( SOWTH-wəl, -⁠wel, locally SUDH-əl) is a thoroughbred horse racing venue located 2 miles (3 km) east of Southwell in Nottinghamshire, England. It is one of only six racecourses in the UK to have an all-weather track and is one of three courses in the UK with a Tapeta surface. Southwell previously used a track surface of Fibresand, a mixture of sand and wispy fibres before changing to Tapeta (a mixture of sand, wax and fibre) in 2021.National Hunt racing on a turf course also takes place at Southwell. In 2007, the Great Yorkshire Chase (now Skybet Chase) was held at Southwell, while Doncaster Racecourse was closed for redevelopment. Southwell racecourse will always be associated with female jockey Hayley Turner, who grew up locally and had her first job in racing with a trainer based adjacent to the track. The racecourse was forced to close temporarily in December 2012 when flooding caused major damage to both the track and the buildings on site. Meetings scheduled for the all-weather flat course were transferred to Wolverhampton and Lingfield. The course successfully re-opened on 5 February 2013 with a seven-race flat meeting. Initial meetings following the re-opening had a limited capacity while renovations continued.

Rolleston is a small village and civil parish in Nottinghamshire by the River Greet (a tributary of the River Trent), a few miles from Southwell not far from the Trent and about 5 miles (8.0 km) southwest of Newark. The population of the civil parish at the 2011 census was 312. It has a church dedicated to the Holy Trinity. It lies close to the railway line between Nottingham and Lincoln with a station serving the village and Southwell as well as the nearby Southwell Racecourse. According to White's Directory of Nottinghamshire, published in 1853, the parish "contains the two townships of Rolleston and Fiskerton, which contain together 583 inhabitants and 2,583a 3r 23p of rich loamy land, of which 280 inhabitants and 1,585 acres (6.41 km2) are in Rolleston and 303 inhabitants and 998a 3r 7p are in Fiskerton, which is included in the Southwell division of Thurgarton hundred. Rolleston is a pleasant village 3 miles (4.8 km) east by south of Southwell, bounded on the south and east by the Trent, and intersected by the River Greet. The church is an ancient structure, dedicated to the Holy Trinity, with a tower and four bells. The living, a vicarage, is valued in the King's books at £10 1s 3d, now £246. The Chapter of Southwell are patrons, and the Rev. Robert Fowler incumbent. The vicarage, a neat brick house near the church, was built in 1844. John Henry Manners Sutton Esq. M.P. is lessee of the great tithe, under the Chapter of Southwell, lord of the manor, and principal owner. The poor have the interest of £130, bequeathed by Sir Thomas Lodge, Diana Gibson, Luke Williamson and Nicholas Kirkby."
