Gardiners Island Windmill

Gardiner's Island is a small island in the Town of East Hampton, New York, in Eastern Suffolk County. It is located in Gardiner's Bay between the two peninsulas at the east end of Long Island. It is 6 miles (9.7 km) long, 3 miles (4.8 km) wide and has 27 miles (43 km) of coastline. The island has been owned by the Gardiner family and their descendants since 1639 when Lion Gardiner purchased it from the Montaukett chief Wyandanch. At 5.19 square miles (13.4 km2) it is one of the largest privately owned islands in the United States, and is slightly smaller than Naushon Island in Massachusetts, owned by the Forbes family.

John Milton, a 1,444-ton vessel built in Fairhaven, Massachusetts, was wrecked on February 20, 1858 5 nautical miles (9 km) west of the Montauk Lighthouse, killing all 32 or 33 people on board, in one of the worst maritime disasters off the east coast of on Long Island, New York. Built in 1854, John Milton was captained by Ephraim Harding of Martha's Vineyard, with its home port at New Bedford, Massachusetts. The 43-year-old Harding was born in New Bedford. Also on board was the captain's teenage son, Rudolphus Hancock Harding. The ship left New York City on December 6, 1856. After loading a cargo of guano at the Chincha Islands in the Pacific Ocean off the coast of Peru, she returned to the United States from South America, stopping at Norfolk, Virginia, on February 14, 1858. She sailed northeast two days later, presumably heading for New York City. A blinding snowstorm and gale sprang up, and temperatures plunged to 8 °F (−13 °C). Captain Harding may have confused the Shinnecock Lighthouse at Ponquogue Point in Hampton Bays, which had been erected in his absence, for the Montauk Light, and ran aground off the shore at what is known today as "Ditch Plains". The frozen bodies of 24 sailors washed ashore and were buried at the South End Burying Ground in East Hampton, New York, where there is a marble monument today. Harding's body was identified, but his son's was never found. Capt. Harding's body was returned home and is buried in the Village Cemetery in Vineyard Haven, MA.

Gardiners Point Island is an island in Block Island Sound, New York, that was the former location of the Gardiners Island Lighthouse as well as Fort Tyler. Once a peninsula of Gardiners Island – permanently detached in 1888 by a storm – it had an area at least as large as 14 acres. Today it is part of the Long Island National Wildlife Refuge Complex, reduced, however, to a relative speck consisting of the foundations of the fort. It is locally referred to as "The Ruins". The island is under the jurisdiction of East Hampton, New York.

Cartwright Island (also known as Cartwright Shoal) exists as a long, narrow, segmented sandbar, separated from the south end of historic Gardiner's Island, off the coast of Long Island, New York. An analysis of satellite and aerial photos shows that over time, the segmented sandbar islands continuously move location, sink and reform, shaped and overwashed by tides and storms. The location and shape of any sandbar island on the shoal may differ from that shown on navigational charts. For this reason, the shoal presents a navigational hazard.Ownership of Cartwright Island and the shoal is disputed. The Goelet family, the current owners of Gardiner's Island, have claimed ownership of Cartwright since the death of the last surviving Gardiner (Robert David Lion Gardiner) in 2004. However, in his lifetime, Mr. Gardiner never made such claim, and to the contrary, stated that the shoal was public property. In 2018 Roderic Richardson challenged the Goelet's assertion of ownership after their security guards confronted Richardson, and members of his family, on Cartwright Island. The Goelets assert their original 17th Century deed grants them everywhere "an Ox can wade without getting its belly wet." Mr. Richardson said there was no mention of any ox in the royal grants, nor of Cartwright Island or the shoal. He also pointed out that a shoal is, by definition, intertidal or underwater land, and so open to public access by New York law and the Public Trust Doctrine. The Goelets accused Richardson of trespass. Judge Steven Tekulsky dismissed the case in April 2020, noting that the charging documents failed to establish that anyone owned Cartwright Shoal, and failed to show that anyone had any authority to prevent Mr. Richardson from walking on the sandbar. In September 1971 Otis G. Pike put forward a bill that the US Federal government expropriate Gardiners Island, Cartwright Island, Gardiners Point Island, Hicks Island, and 1000 acres of the nearby shore of Long Island, and turn them into a national monument.In September 1973 David P. Rumbough disappeared during a boating accident off Cartwright Island. His friend Jonathan Kieth survived the crash of his 27 foot speedboat. Rumbough was the son of actress Dina Merrill.

Accabonac Harbor is a natural harbor in East Hampton, New York near the Eastern end of Long Island, New York. The harbor is shallow and is a coastal wetland that is preserved and therefore is a winter habitat for waterfowl. It is listed as a state-level Important Bird Area.

American Airlines Flight 1502 was a crew training flight from Idlewild International Airport (now John F. Kennedy International Airport). On January 28, 1961, the Boeing 707 operating the flight crashed out of control into the Atlantic Ocean 9.5 miles (15.3 km) west of Montauk Point, New York, and all six crew on board were killed. The cause of the crash was never officially determined. Flight 1502 would be the second of three 707s that American lost in a three-year period in the New York area.

In November 1945, Jackson Pollock and his wife Lee Krasner moved to what is now known as the Pollock-Krasner House and Studio in Springs in the town of East Hampton on Long Island, New York. The wood-frame house on 1.56 acres (0.63 ha) with a nearby barn is on Accobonac Creek.

Springs is a census-designated place (CDP) roughly corresponding to the hamlet by the same name in the Town of East Hampton in Suffolk County, New York, United States, on the South Fork of Long Island. As of the 2010 United States Census, the CDP population was 6,592.

Ambrose Parsons House is a historic home located at Springs in Suffolk County, New York. It was built in 1842 and 1851, and is a frame Greek Revival style residence. It is a two-story structure with a random ashlar, granite foundation. It has a square plan (31 ft (9.4 m) by 31 ft (9.4 m)), cedar shingle siding with corner boards, cedar wood shingle roofing, a one-story kitchen wing, and two principal elevations. The house is next door to the Charles Parsons Blacksmith Building. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1996. Though the NRHP lists the site as being at Springs-Fireplace Road at the Junction with Old Stone Highway, it is actually at the corner of Springs-Fireplace Road and Parson's Place, which is near the address given by NRHP.

Green River Cemetery is a cemetery in the hamlet of Springs, New York within the Town of East Hampton. The cemetery was originally intended for the blue collar local families (called Bonackers) of the Springs neighborhood who supported the ocean mansions in East Hampton (village), New York. Families with long histories in the region are interred there, including the Millers, Kings, Bennetts, and Talmages. However, after Jackson Pollock was buried on a hill there in 1956, it became famous as the artists' and writers' cemetery. Headstones have become works of art. Despite its name, there are no rivers near the cemetery.

Hicks Island is an island in Napeague Bay, Suffolk County, New York, in the United States. The small island is located north of Napeague on the eastern end of Long Island. Hicks Island was named for an early owner. It has also been known as Goffe Island.In September 1971 Otis G. Pike put forward a bill that the US Federal government expropriate Hicks Island, historic Gardiners Island, Cartwright Island, Gardiners Point Island and 1000 acres of the nearby shore of Long Island, and turn them into a national monument.

Gardiners Bay is a small arm of the Atlantic Ocean, approximately 10 mi (16 km) long and 8 mi (13 km) wide in the U.S. state of New York between the two flukelike peninsulas at the eastern end of Long Island. It is bounded on its eastern end, where it connects to Block Island Sound, by Gardiners Island and Promised Land. Adjoining harbors include Three Mile Harbor, Clearwater beach, Acabonack Harbor, and Lazy Point's Napeague harbor. Native fish include; Striped Bass, Bluefish, Fluke, Yellowtail, flounder, blackfish, weakfish, Porgy, sea Robbin, and sea skate. The area is fed by the nearby estuaries of Three mile Harbor, Acabonack Creek, and Napeague, which produce ideal environments for shellfish and crustaceans. Blue claw crab, oysters, and hard shell clams, scallops, and conch are abundant throughout these areas. It is bounded on the western end by Shelter Island. It connects by two channels at the north and south end of Shelter Island to Great Peconic Bay. During the American Revolutionary War and the War of 1812, the bay was controlled by the British, who used Gardiners Island to store provisions. The British fleet assembled in Cherry Harbor in the bay before sailing to Chesapeake Bay to attack Washington, D.C. and burn the United States Capitol. Gardiners Bay is part of the Peconic Estuary and received the designation as an Estuary of National Significance from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency in 1993.
