Kohlberg is a municipality in the district of Neustadt an der Waldnaab in Bavaria, Germany. It is situated c. 17 km (11 mi) southwest of Weiden in der Oberpfalz and c. 10 km (6.2 mi) northeast of Hirschau.

Etzenricht is a municipality in the Upper Palatinate, ca. 6 km (3.7 mi) southeast of Weiden in the district of Neustadt an der Waldnaab in Bavaria in Germany. Etzenricht has 1,532 inhabitants (Dec. 2020) and various small industries. East of Etzenricht toward Rothenstadt is a transformer station of the E.ON AG with the GKK Etzenricht (described below) and a large compressor station for natural gas. Near Etzenricht are numerous fish-rich small waters, which can be used by anglers after obtaining a fishing license from the local fishery association.

Neustadt an der Waldnaab is a Landkreis (district) in Bavaria, Germany. It is bounded by (from the south and clockwise) the districts of Schwandorf, Amberg-Sulzbach, Bayreuth and Tirschenreuth, and by the Czech Republic (Plzeň Region). The city of Weiden in der Oberpfalz is enclosed by, but does not belong to the district.

GKK Etzenricht, an abbreviation of Gleichstromkurzkupplung Etzenricht, meaning Etzenricht HVDC-back-to-back station, was an HVDC back-to-back facility near Etzenricht in the district of Neustadt an der Waldnaab in Bavaria, Germany. It was built on the site of the Etzenricht substation, a 380 kV/220 kV/110 kV-substation, which went into service in 1970 and expanded afterwards several times. The facility was used between 1993 and 1995 for the exchange of power between Germany and the Czech Republic, operated by Bayernwerk AG (now part of TenneT).

Parkstein (Northern Bavarian: Parkstoa) is a municipality in the district of Neustadt an der Waldnaab in Bavaria in Germany. In 2020, it counted approximately 2,300 inhabitants. The origins of its castle, built atop a conical shaped mountain, also called the Parkstein, date back to around the year 1000. A first written account of its existence can be traced back to the year 1053 in the documentations of the monks of Niederalteich of the Reichstag in Merseburg. Parkstein was chartered in 1435.Most likely in November 1796, Alexander von Humboldt called the 24-million-year-old basalt formation the most beautiful he had encountered in Europe. According to the Bavarian State Geology Office, during the Cenozoic, from Paleocene to the Pliocene epochs, a number of active volcanoes produced liquid magma in Northern Bavaria, mostly due to the continental collision of Europe and Africa. As a result, not only the Alps but a number of fissures and cracks began to form throughout central Europe where magma could rise. Most of the Parkstein's magma cooled below the surface, leading to the crystalline column formation that is now exposed as a result of erosion.

The Waldnaab (Northern Bavarian: Woidnaab, Czech: Lesní Nába, in its upper course: Tirschenreuther Waldnaab) is the left-hand, eastern and longest headstream of the River Naab in the Upper Palatinate (Bavaria, Germany). At its confluence with the Haidenaab near Luhe-Wildenau, the Naab is formed. The Waldnaab is 99.1 km long; combined with the Naab, the total length is 196.6 kilometres (122.2 mi).

The Parkstein, also called the Hoher Parkstein and Basaltkegel Hoher Parkstein is a well-known local hill and tourist destination in the Steinwald Mountains of central Germany. It lies 10 kilometres (6.2 mi) northwest of Weiden in der Oberpfalz in the district of Neustadt a.d.Waldnaab and is one of the most popular walking and daytripper destinations in North Upper Palatinate. Around the volcanically-formed hill, which is 595 metres (1,952 ft) above sea level (N.N.), is the village of the same name, Parkstein. At one time a castle (Parkstein Castle) stood on the summit. The Parkstein is famous for its impressive basalt outcrop. This basalt formation consists of pentagonal and hexagonal columns, up to one metre high, whose shafts extend into the earth to a depth of up to 30 metres. It is part of an old stream of lava that has been exposed at the surface after the softer rock above it had been weathered away over the course of millions of years. The wall of basalt measures 38 metres. Alexander von Humboldt viewed the Parkstein as the "most beautiful basalt cone in Europe". In 2004 it was entered by the Free State of Bavaria as No. 20 on the list of the 100 "most beautiful geotopes in Bavaria".

Schnaittenbach is a town in the Amberg-Sulzbach district, in Bavaria, Germany. It is situated 16 km northeast of Amberg.

Weiden in der Oberpfalz (official abbreviation: Weiden i.d.OPf.; Northern Bavarian: Weidn in da Owapfalz) is a district-free city in Bavaria, Germany. It is located 100 km (62 mi) east of Nuremberg and 35 km (22 mi) west of the Czech border. Weiden is the second biggest city in the governmental district Oberpfalz, next to Regensburg. A branch of the German Army is located here.

The Luhe is a roughly 26-kilometre-long (16 mi) left headstream of the River Naab in the Upper Palatine Forest in Bavaria, southern Germany. It rises near the hamlet of Wampenhof near Waldthurn, flows through Waldthurn, Roggenstein, Kaimling, past Michldorf and Leuchtenberg and through Lückenrieth and Luhe-Markt. There it discharges into the Naab. Due to the river's very steep descent, many watermills and hammer forges have been built along its course. Its catchment area is used almost entirely for agricultural purposes with the result that the water of the Luhe is of good quality, enabling many species of fish, crustaceans and mussels to thrive there. Its most important tributaries are the Trausenbach, the Lerau and the Gleitsbach.
