The City of Merri-bek is a local government area in metropolitan Melbourne, Australia. It comprises the inner northern suburbs between 4 and 11 kilometres from the Melbourne CBD. The Merri-bek local government area covers 51 km2 (20 sq mi), and in June 2018, it had a population of 181,725.The local government area was created as City of Moreland in 1994 during the amalgamations of local governments by the state government, being created from the former local government areas of the City of Brunswick, the City of Coburg and the southern part of the City of Broadmeadows. It was renamed to Merri-bek in September 2022. In 2004 the Victorian Electoral Commission (VEC), an independent authority created under Victorian state legislation, conducted a representation review of the council's electoral structure, resulting in a recommendation that the 10 single councillor wards be replaced by three multi-councillor wards. A consequence of the change from single-councillor to multi-councillor wards was a change in election method from Instant runoff voting to proportional representation via Single transferable vote. Elections are held every four years.

The suburb also borders the Tullamarine Freeway. Major features of the suburb include the Bell Street/Melville Road Shopping area.

Australian International Academy is an Islamic school group in various locations in Australia. The school was Australia's first Muslim college and was then known as King Khalid. Its primary school was set up in 1999 with a grant from Saudi Arabia, that being the only foreign money the school has received.The school has six campuses that offer the Australian National Curriculum and the International Baccalaureate. The academy sports a Primary Campus (providing grades Prep to Grade 5) in Coburg, and a Secondary Campus (Grade 6 to Year 12) in Merlynston, North Coburg. A new campus, based in Caroline Springs, commenced operation at the beginning of 2014. Over the past decade, the Academy has expanded into New South Wales by purchasing a school in Strathfield South (Noor Al Houda Islamic College, originally Leigh College) and an additional campus in Kellyville. The Academy also has a campus in Abu Dhabi, UAE which in 2013 became a fully accredited International Baccalaureate (IB). The Australian International Academy is also accredited with being the first and only Muslim school to offer all three IB programmes in the southern hemisphere.

Coburg North is a suburb in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, 9 km (5.6 mi) north of Melbourne's Central Business District, located within the Cities of Darebin and Merri-bek local government areas. Coburg North recorded a population of 8,327 at the 2021 census.Although most of Coburg North is within the City of Merri-bek, a handful of properties on Elizabeth Street, Coburg North's eastern boundary, are located in the City of Darebin. The suburb lies north of Coburg, and has the same postcode (3058). The majority of Coburg North is zoned residential, though there are some industrial pockets. The major commercial strip on Sydney Road is primarily automotive-related businesses. Merlynston has a small shopping strip with some cafes. The rest of the suburb is reliant on corner shops for everyday needs.

Merlynston railway station is located on the Upfield line in Victoria, Australia. It serves the northern Melbourne suburb of Coburg North, and it opened on 8 October 1889 as North Coburg. It closed on 13 July 1903, and reopened on 1 October 1914. On February 6 1922, it was renamed Merlynston.

Hadfield recorded a population of 6,269 at the 2021 census.The suburb of Hadfield is bounded by West Street in the west, South Street and Boundary Road in the south, Sydney Road in the east and Hilton Street in the north. Hadfield is located between Fawkner and Glenroy and falls within the 3046 postcode. Major features of the area include the Fawkner Crematorium and Memorial Park, the West Street Shopping Centre and the Merlynston Creek.
