Black Mountain Ranch is a suburban community in the northern part of the city of San Diego, California 92127. Black Mountain Ranch encompasses 5,100 acres (21 km2) and is located north of Rancho Peñasquitos and Torrey Highlands, south of the Santa Fe Valley, east of Fairbanks Ranch and Rancho Santa Fe, and west of 4S Ranch. The development of Black Mountain Ranch took over 17 years to complete and was led by Fred Maas, a local San Diego businessman with a background in politics and sustainable building practices. Black Mountain Ranch primarily consists of two separate housing developments known as Santaluz and Del Sur. Santaluz is the area in the southern half of Black Mountain Ranch while Del Sur comprises the northern half. Primary access to the community is via Camino Del Sur (from State Highway 56 via Interstates 5 or 15), Carmel Valley Road, San Dieguito Road (from Rancho Santa Fe) and Camino Del Norte (from Interstate 15). The Bernardo Fire was a wildfire that occurred during the May 2014 San Diego County wildfire outbreak. The Bernardo fire was the second of the May 2014 wildfires in San Diego County, and the first of the swarm of wildfires that ignited in mid-May, following dry weather and Santa Ana conditions. The fire ignited in 4S Ranch in San Diego County, on May 13, near Del Norte High School, and eventually spread southward and westward, burning 1,548 acres (6 km2) of land. The Bernardo Fire was extinguished on May 17, without causing any significant property losses.

Lake Hodges is a lake and reservoir located within the city limits of San Diego, California. It is about 31 miles (50 km) north of Downtown San Diego, just north of the Rancho Bernardo community, and just south of the city's border with Escondido. When full, the reservoir has 1,234 acres (4.99 km2), a maximum water depth of 115 feet (35 m), and 27 miles (43 km) of shoreline. Lake Hodges has a total capacity of 30,251 acre-feet of water. Lake Hodges is owned by the city of San Diego, supplies water to the San Dieguito Water District and Santa Fe Irrigation District, and its mailing city address is Escondido. Water level elevation in the lake is maintained at a maximum of 295 feet (90 m) above sea level, 20 feet (6.1 m) lower than the dam's maximum of 315 feet (96 m) spillway to ensure safe operations. The lake level can fluctuate significantly, depending upon the amount of runoff received from the San Dieguito River drainage basin.Interstate 15 crosses Lake Hodges via the Lake Hodges Bridge.
