The Sigma Alpha Epsilon Building is a historic Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity house located near the University of Missouri at Columbia, Missouri. It was built about 1908 to house the Welch Military Academy. The building took its present form in 1929 under the direction of architects Fred Wallace of Marchall and Brown. It is a 2+1⁄2-story Neo-Classical Revival style brick building with a "T"-plan. Its front facade features a central pedimented portico with six two-story stone Ionic order columns.It was restored between 1965 and 1966 after a fire. The property was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2014.

Welch Hall is a historic residence located at 24 E Stewart Rd on Oak Hill in Columbia, Missouri. The residence is home to the University of Missouri chapter of Sigma Alpha Epsilon. The site was recognized by the Columbia Historic Preservation Commission as one of the city's Most Notable Historic Properties in 2004. It was nominated for the National Register of Historic Places in 2014.

The Smithton Land Company was a group of American pioneers who in 1818 established the frontier village of Smithton, Missouri in the Boonslick region of Missouri, then the Missouri Territory. In 1821 the settlement was renamed Columbia, Missouri and relocated slightly East of its original location. Smithton was the first county seat of Boone County. The company and town were named after Thomas Adams Smith, the receiver of the land office in Franklin, Missouri.Smithton’s origin begins with the settlement of American pioneers from Kentucky and Virginia in an early 1800s region known as the Boonslick. Before 1815 settlement in the region was confined to small log forts because of the threat of Native American attack during the War of 1812. When the war ended settlers came on foot, horseback, and wagon, often moving entire households along the Boone's Lick Road and often bringing enslaved African Americans. By 1818 it was clear that the increased population would necessitate a new county be created from territorial Howard County. The Mouniteau Creek on the west and Cedar Creek on the east were obvious natural boundaries.Believing it was only a matter of time before a county seat was chosen, the Smithton Land Company was formed to purchase over 2,000 acres (8.1 km2) to established the village of Smithton near the present-day intersection of Walnut and Garth. In 1819 Smithton was a small cluster of log cabins in an ancient forest of oak and hickory; chief among them was the cabin of Richard Gentry, a trustee of the Smithton Company who would become first mayor of Columbia. In 1820 Boone County was formed and named after the recently deceased explorer Daniel Boone. The Missouri Legislature appointed John Gray, Jefferson Fulcher, Absalom Hicks, Lawrence Bass, and David Jackson as commissioners to select and establish a permanent county seat. Smithton never had more than twenty people, and it was quickly realized that well digging was difficult because of the bedrock. Springs were discovered across the Flat Branch Creek, so in the Spring of 1821 Columbia was laid off and the inhabitants of Smithton moved their cabins to the new town. The first house in Columbia was built by Thomas Duly in 1820 at what would become Fifth and Broadway. They renamed the settlement Columbia—a historical name for the United States. Columbia's permanence was ensured when it was chosen as county seat in 1821 and the Boone's Lick Road was rerouted down Broadway.

The Columbia station, also known as Missouri, Kansas, and Texas Railroad Depot or Katy Station, was built in 1909 by the Missouri–Kansas–Texas Railroad in downtown Columbia, Missouri. The station was one of two train stations serving Columbia in the 20th century, the other being the Wabash Railroad Station and Freight House constructed the same year. The building is the terminus of the MKT Trail, a rails-to-trails project that was built on the former spur of the railroad. Having housed a popular local restaurant named "Katy Station" after the building, it now houses a bar name "Shiloh's."The property was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1979.

Islamic Center of Central Missouri is a mosque located in Columbia, Missouri. Established in 1983, it is the first Islamic center in the state of Missouri.

Second Baptist Church is a historic Baptist church located at 4th St. and Broadway in Columbia, Missouri. It was built in 1894, and has Gothic Revival and Romanesque Revival design elements. The church was founded by newly emancipated slaves many of whom were members of First Baptist Church. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1980.

The John W. Boone House, also known as the Stuart P. Parker Funeral Home, is a historic home located at Columbia, Missouri. It was built about 1890, and is a two-story frame house that measures roughly 46 feet by 45 feet. It was the home of ragtime musician John William 'Blind' Boone. The home, which is owned by the City of Columbia, had fallen into a state of severe disrepair, but is now under restoration It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1980.

The Missouri State Teachers Association Building is a historic building located at Columbia, Missouri. It was built in 1927 and houses the Missouri State Teachers Association Headquarters. The building is located on South 6th Street on the University of Missouri campus and is a two-story, Tudor Revival style brick building. It was the first building in the United States built specifically to house a state teachers association. A historical marker on the site commemorates the lands former tenant "Columbia College," the forerunner of the University of Missouri. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1980.

Missouri Scholars Academy, or MSA, is a three-week residential summer program held on the University of Missouri campus in Columbia, Missouri for 330 of Missouri's gifted high school juniors. MSA exists to enrich and expand gifted education for individual students and gifted programs. MSA is a member of the National Conference of Governor's Schools. Missouri Scholars Academy should not be confused with the Missouri Student Association, with which it shares an acronym.

The State Historical Society of Missouri, a private membership and state funded organization, is a comprehensive research facility located in Columbia, Missouri, specializing in the preservation and study of Missouri's cultural heritage. Established in 1898 by the Missouri Press Association and made a trustee of the state in 1901, the Society is the official historical society of the state of Missouri and is located on the campus of the University of Missouri in Downtown Columbia, Missouri. The Society publishes the quarterly Missouri Historical Review, the only scholarly academic journal produced in the state. The Society engages in a number of outreach programs to bring Missouri's history to the public. Such programs are the Missouri History in Performance theatre, the Missouri History Speakers' Bureau, and the Missouri Conference on History. The collection of the Society, concerning pamphlets, books, and state publications, is over 460,000 items. In addition, the Society has over 500,000 manuscript items, 2,900 maps, over 150,000 state archival records, and over 57,000 reels of microfilm. In 2011, the Western Manuscript Collection, accessible in Columbia, Kansas City, Rolla, and St. Louis, Missouri, specializing in the preservation and collection of Missouri and Middle West history, was absorbed into the Society.

Frederick Douglass High School is an alternative public high school located in Columbia, Missouri. Douglass enrolls students 9-12 from throughout the Columbia Public Schools District. The school competes in MSHSAA 4A. Their sports include basketball and track and field. The school differs from typical high schools due to providing programs including child development and parenting classes and a day care facility. It was built in 1917, and is a two-story, Classical Revival style brick building on a raised basement. The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1980 as Fred Douglass School. Recently, it was closed, restored, and modernized, reopening in the Fall of 2017. It is one of four High Schools in the Columbia Public School District.

The Mizzou College of Health Sciences is the University of Missouri system’s only school of health professions and the state’s only public health program located on a health sciences campus. Its mission is to improve the health and well-being of others.The school is an important member of the University of Missouri Health System. Other members include the Sinclair School of Nursing, the School of Medicine, University Hospitals and Clinics and University Physicians.
