Criss Cross (New Kent, Virginia)

Colonial Downs is a racetrack located in New Kent County, Virginia adjacent to Interstate 64, halfway between Richmond and Williamsburg. The track conducted Thoroughbred flat racing and Standardbred harness racing between 1997 and 2014, and reopened for thoroughbreds in 2019. It is owned and operated by Churchill Downs, Inc.

New Kent County is a county in the southeastern part of the Commonwealth of Virginia. As of the 2020 United States census, its population was 22,945. Its county seat is New Kent. New Kent County is located east of the Greater Richmond Region and is part of the Richmond and the Hampton Roads Metropolitan Statistical Area.

Cedar Lane is a historic farm property at 9040 Virginia State Route 249 in central New Kent County, Virginia. Built about 1782, it is one of the county's better examples of early Federal period architecture. It is a two-story frame structure, with a gabled roof and clapboarded exterior. An open hip-roofed porch extends across the front of the main block, which is flanked by two-story and one-story wings. It was probably built by either William Poindexter or by his daughter Ann and her husband Thomas Howle, and achieved much of its present form by 1860. The property was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2017.

Moss Side is a historic farm property at 8501 Virginia State Route 249 in central New Kent County, Virginia. It now consists of about 226 acres (91 ha), whose centerpiece is a two-story wood-frame I-house built about 1870. Although this type of house was once quite common, it is a well-preserved example of the style, and is accompanied by a period outbuilding that probably functioned as either a guest house, kitchen, or tenant housing. Although the property's early history is dominated by the Christian family, these buildings date to the late 19th-century ownership by Henry Meyers, who gave the property its name. The property was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2017.

New Kent High School is a public high school located in New Kent, Virginia, east of Richmond. Athletic teams compete in the Virginia High School League's Bay Rivers District in Group 3A. The school relocated to a new facility for the 2008–2009 school year. Before that, it occupied the location of the current New Kent Middle School, and before that, that of the historic high school. The school is known as a state powerhouse in wrestling; their program won the Group 3A state title four years in a row, from 2019 to 2022, and was runner-up in 2023 and 2024. New Kent has also won seven consecutive regional wrestling championships as of 2024.

Olivet Presbyterian Church is a historic Presbyterian church located near Providence Forge, New Kent County, Virginia. It was built in 1856, and is a small frame church building in the Greek Revival style. It features a flush-boarded, pedimented portico with four fluted Greek Doric order columns. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1978.

St. Peter's Church is a historic Episcopal church near Talleysville, Virginia, United States. Built in 1703, the church was designated as "The First Church of the First First-Lady" by the Virginia General Assembly in 1960 and added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1969. It was designated a National Historic Landmark on March 2, 2012, as an exceptionally well-preserved colonial-era church.

New Kent High School is a historic school in New Kent, Virginia. The school, along with the nearby George W. Watkins Elementary School, is associated with the landmark Supreme Court case Green v. County School Board of New Kent County (1968), in which the court defined what the standards of Brown v. Board of Education were in the desegregation cases. This decision ended the era of Massive Resistance and ushered in the era of integration.

New Kent is a census-designated place (CDP) in and the county seat of New Kent County, Virginia, United States. The population as of the 2020 Census was 739. Cumberland Landing, Cumberland Plantation, and the Cumberland Marsh Natural Area Preserve are near New Kent. Criss Cross and St. Peter's Church are listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and New Kent High School and George W. Watkins High School are National Historic Landmarks.

Chestnut Grove was an 18th-century plantation house on the Pamunkey River near New Kent Court House in New Kent County, Virginia, United States. Chestnut Grove is best known as the birthplace of Martha Washington, wife of George Washington, and the first First Lady of the United States. Martha Washington was born in the east room of the mansion.

Talleysville is an unincorporated community in New Kent County, Virginia, United States. Two buildings in the area, its St. Peter's Church and the Marl Hill were listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1969 and 1990 respectively.

Cumberland is a historic farm property at 9007 Cumberland Road in central northern New Kent County, Virginia. The property, now about 131 acres (53 ha), was once the centerpiece of a much larger plantation estate. The main house has a construction history dating to the 18th century, and includes a number of interior features from that period. The exterior is largely the product of a 1930s update of the property to a design by Harden de Valsen Pratt, a major restoration architect. Other historic elements of the property include a barn and the family cemetery of the Toler and Fauntleroy families, who owned the property for over a century. The property was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2017.
