River Taw

Braunton Burrows is a sand dune system on the North Devon coast. It is privately owned and forms part of the Christie Devon Estates Trust (see Tapeley Park). Braunton Burrows is a prime British sand dune site, the largest sand dune system (psammosere) in England. It is particularly important ecologically because it includes the complete successional range of dune plant communities, with over 470 vascular plant species. The short turf communities are very rich in lichens and herbs, and the dune slacks are also rich. The many rare plants and animals include 14 with UK Biodiversity Action Plans. For example, this is one of only two sites in the UK for the Amber Sandbowl Snail Catinella arenaria, which is found on the wet dune slacks.

Saunton Sands is a beach near the English village of Saunton on the North Devon coast near Braunton, popular for longboard surfing. Beyond its southern end, Crow Point, England is the mouth of the River Taw estuary. It is part of the Taw-Torridge estuary Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and is at the centre of the UNESCO-designated North Devon's Biosphere Reserve, where Braunton Burrows lies at the heart. Saunton Sands Hotel overlooks the beach at the northern end. The beach is cordoned off a few times a year and the beach used as an airstrip for military transport planes, usually Lockheed C-130 Hercules of the Royal Air Force, to practise STOL beach landings and take offs. Flying kites is prohibited, accordingly, on part of the beach. Saunton Sands is popular with surfers because the beach is long, an unusually exposed westerly, and provides space for large groups. The beach has no life guards and is known to have dangerous riptides. Swimming here is dangerous and has resulted in many coast guard call outs. On 3 August 1990, a temperature of 35.4 °C (95.7 °F) was recorded at Saunton Sands, which is the highest temperature recorded in the Devon and Cornwall region.

The River Torridge is a river in Devon in England; it rises near Meddon. The river describes a long loop through Devon farming country where its tributaries the Lew and Okement join before meeting the Taw at Appledore and flowing into the Bristol Channel. The river is spate dependent and often flows between wooded banks which can be steep. The Torridge local government district is named after the river. It was the home of Tarka the Otter in Henry Williamson's book.

Appledore Lifeboat Station can be found at the end of Irsha Street in Appledore, a village overlooking the confluence of the River Taw and the River Torridge, on the north-west coast of the county of Devon, in England. A local committee established a lifeboat station at Appledore in 1825, operating the first lifeboat provided by the newly formed Royal National Institution for the Preservation of Life from Shipwreck (RNIPLS). From 1831, the station was managed by the North Devon Humane Society. The present station, operated by the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI), opened in 2001. The station currently operates a Shannon-class All-weather lifeboat (ALB), 13-32 Ruth and David Arthur (ON 1339), on station since 2026, and a B-class (Atlantic 85) Inshore lifeboat (ILB), Glanely (B-861), on station since 2012.

Lovers' Lane Halt railway station was a minor railway station or halt in north Devon close to the town of Appledore, a community lying on the peninsula formed by the sea (Barnstaple Bay), the River Torridge, and the River Taw.

Saunton Golf Club is a private golf club in England, that is located about 2 miles (3 km) to the west of Braunton, Devon. It was founded in 1897. During the months of May and June 1944 the United States Army used the links as a camping area for the 771st Tank Destroyer Battalion. Saunton has two golf courses, East and West, and has hosted many prestigious amateur championships including the English Amateur, the Seniors Amateur Championship in 2006 and 2024 and the Brabazon Trophy on several occasions. In 1997, Sergio García won the British Boys' Championship at Saunton.

Saunton is a village located approximately two miles from Braunton on the North Devon coast in the South West of England. Several kilometres long, the village borders Braunton Burrows, the heart of North Devon's Biosphere Reserve, the first "new style" UNESCO-designated Biosphere Reserve. Its beach Saunton Sands is part of the Taw-Torridge Estuary. In 1994 termites, of the species Reticulitermes grassei, were identified in two bungalows in Saunton. Anecdotal evidence suggests the infestation could date back 70 years before the official identification. In 1998 Termite Eradication Programme was set-up, with the intention of containing and eradicating the colony. In 2021 the UK’s Termite Eradication Programme announced the eradication of the colony, the first time a country has eradicated termites. The Saunton Surf Life Saving Club is based here. The South West Coast Path National Trail runs through the village, and gives access to walks along the rugged North Devon coast. St Mary's Church is the parish church of Appledore. It sits on the Quay overlooking the River Torridge. The foundation stone of the church was laid in 1836, the church being dedicated two years later. The sailing ship Marco Polo was used to create the wooden screen. The creation of a church in Appledore is believed to be due to Protestant dissenters being ejected from nearby Northam Parish Church in 1662 and opening their own chapel in 1699.

Appledore is a village at the mouth of the River Torridge, about 6 miles (10 km) west of Barnstaple and about 3 miles (5 km) north of Bideford in the county Devon, England. It is the home of Appledore Shipbuilders, a lifeboat slipway and Hocking's Ice Cream, a brand of ice cream only sold in North Devon. There are numerous shops, cafes and galleries. The local football club is Appledore F.C. The ward population at the 2011 census increased to 2,814.

The North Devon Maritime Museum is a museum situated in the estuary town of Appledore, Devon, England. Housed in Odun House, a Georgian Grade II listed building which has been the home of several ship owners and master mariners over the past 200 years, the museum opened in 1977. It is open from early April/Easter to the end of October each year and has an admission charge.
