Huy

The 1694 Siege of Huy or Second Siege of Huy took place during the Nine Years' War between 22 September and 27 September 1694. The campaign of 1694 started rather late in the year. The French limited themselves to defending what they already had and William III first wanted to await the outcome of the expedition to Brest. The Anglo-Dutch amphibious assault was a failure. 2000 of the 7000 allies died in the assault. At the same time William III was gathering the Anglo-Dutch army at Leuven. End July he reviewed the troops there and they were in excellent condition. The Anglo-Dutch army was reinforced by 6,000 Bavarian troops in pay of Spain and numbered 84,000 men in total. The allies possessed the numerical advantage so the French remained on the defensive. When this became clear to William III he send the Duke of Holstein Plön and Menno van Coehoorn with an army to take the city of Huy. 5 days later on 27 September, the French garrison surrendered. The 780 remaining defenders of the original 1200 were allowed to march out with the honours of war. William III felt that enough had been achieved this year: the allies didn't have to keep as many troops on garrison duty in Liége and the Meuse was again in allied hands up to Namur. It also allowed him to plan for the siege of Namur the next year.

The Fort of Huy (French: Fort de Huy) or the Citadel of Huy (French: Citadelle de Huy), known locally as The Castle (Walloon: Li Tchestia), is a fortress located in the Walloon city of Huy in the province of Liège, Belgium. The fort occupies a high position in the town, overlooking the strategic Meuse river. The site of the citadel has been fortified since the ninth century, and various structures have been built on the site. The current fort dates to in 1818 during the period of Dutch rule in Belgium and took five years to build. The Citadel was frequently used to house political prisoners. In the 19th century, members of the revolutionary Belgian Legion were imprisoned after their failed invasion of Belgium at Risquons-Tout in 1848. During the German occupation of Belgium in World War II, six thousand Belgian political prisoners, including the Communist Julien Lahaut, were held at the citadel and many were later sent to concentration camps in Germany.Together with Dinant, Liège and Namur, the Citadel of Huy forms part of the so-called Meuse Citadels.

The Hoyoux (French pronunciation: ​[ɔju]) is a river of Belgium, a right tributary of the Meuse. It flows for 28 kilometres (17 mi) through the province of Liège in the northern-central part of the country. It flows into the Meuse in Huy.

The Mur de Huy (English: Wall of Huy) is a 128 metres (420 ft) high hill located in Huy, Wallonia, Belgium. It is also known as le Chemin des Chapelles (English: The Path of the Chapels) because of the seven chapels along its route. This climb is famous for being part of the route of La Flèche Wallonne professional cycling race. It also served as the finish for the third stage of the 2015 Tour de France.

The Mehaigne (French pronunciation: ​[mə.ɛɲ]) is a river in Belgium. It is a left tributary to the Meuse. Its source is at Saint-Denis (La Bruyère), in the province of Namur, at an elevation of 180 metres (590 ft). The Mehaigne flows in a roughly eastern direction through a region called Hesbaye. It flows into the river Meuse in the municipality of Wanze at an elevation of 85 metres (279 ft).

The Arrondissement of Huy (French: Arrondissement de Huy; Dutch: Arrondissement Hoei) is one of the four administrative arrondissements in the Walloon province of Liège, Belgium.

The Wanze Sugar Factory was founded by the Sucreries Centrales SA. It is located in Wanze and is currently owned by Raffinerie Tirlemontoise. Wanze Sugar Factory is the only European sugar factory that still uses an outlying râperie connected by a pipeline. The râperie in Longchamps is located 23 km west of the central factory.

Yeunten Ling is a Tibetan Buddhist institute in Huy in the province of Liège in Belgium. It is one of the largest Buddhist Dharma centres in Europe. The centre is part of the Tibetan Institute. The name of the centre means the "Garden of Qualities" and was given by Kalu Rinpoche, a Rinpoche who founded several centres in Europe. The centre focuses on intensive courses and retreats.

The Tihange Nuclear Power Station is one of two nuclear energy production sites in Belgium and contains 3 nuclear power plants. The site is located on the bank of the Meuse river, near the village of Tihange in the Walloon province of Liège. The station is operated and majority-owned by vertically-integrated Belgian energy corporation Electrabel. EDF Luminus has a 50% stake in the oldest unit and a 10% stake in the two newest units. It employs 1074 workers and covers an area of 75 hectares (190 acres). The plant represents about 15% of Belgium's total electricity production capacity. Nuclear energy typically provides between 40%-50% of Belgium's domestically-generated electricity. In order to extend the lifetime of Tihange 3, the operator will receive subsidies through a Contract of Difference arrangement.

Château Rouge (Red Castle) is a château in the ancienne commune of Bas-Oha, Wanze, Liège Province, Wallonia, Belgium. The original castle was built in the 11th century, and served as the residence for a religious community. Gutted by a fire in 1885, the current structure was built within the original walls, though the red colour may be an addition to these outer walls during this 19th century rebuild.Château Rouge, now abandoned, was last used as a nursing home.

Marchin (French pronunciation: [maʁʃɛ̃]; Walloon: Mårcin) is a municipality of Wallonia located in the province of Liège, Belgium. On January 1, 2006, Marchin had a total population of 5,114. The total area is 30.00 km2 which gives a population density of 170 inhabitants per km2. The municipality consists of the following districts: Marchin, and Vyle-et-Tharoul.
