Uckington, Shropshire

Royal Air Force Atcham, or more simply RAF Atcham, is a former Royal Air Force station located 5 miles (8 km) east of Shrewsbury, Shropshire, England, on the north eastern boundary of Attingham Park. Initially built for RAF Fighter Command, during the Second World War its primary use was by the United States Army Air Forces (USAAF) Eighth Air Force. It was mainly the home of the 495th Fighter Training Group, where pilots were trained to fly Republic P-47 Thunderbolts although a few also were trained to fly twin-engined Lockheed P-38 Lightnings for both Eighth and Ninth Air Force units. Atcham continued to see use as a training base until it was returned to the RAF in March 1945.

Donnington is a hamlet in the English county of Shropshire. It forms part of the civil parish of Wroxeter and Uppington. It lies near to Charlton Hill, which rises to 469 feet (143 m) above sea level. The hamlet contained a now defunct 'free grammar school' under patronage of the Newport family during the 17th and 18th centuries whose pupils included Royalist divine Richard Allestree and Puritan divine Richard Baxter, the latter of whom taught at the school for three months. Welsh poet Goronwy Owen was master at the school as well as curate at Uppington, from 1748 to 1753.

Wroxeter and Uppington is a civil parish in the English county of Shropshire. The population of the Civil Parish at the 2011 census was 382. It lies mainly between the River Severn and the old A5 (now the B5061) and stretches from Atcham to The Wrekin. The main villages are Wroxeter and Uppington. Also forming part of the parish are the hamlets of Rushton, Charlton Hill, Donnington, Eyton and Dryton, as well as Atcham Business Park/Industrial Estate.The parish has an active cricket club, the Wroxeter & Uppington CC. Formed in 1906, it was originally based in Donnington, and now has a ground in Uppington.

Viroconium or Uriconium, formally Viroconium Cornoviorum, was a Roman city, one corner of which is now occupied by Wroxeter, a small village in Shropshire, England, about 5 miles (8 km) east-south-east of Shrewsbury. At its peak, Viroconium is estimated to have been the 4th-largest Roman settlement in Britain, a civitas with a population of more than 15,000. The settlement probably lasted until the end of the 7th century or the beginning of the 8th. Extensive remains can still be seen.

Wroxeter ( ROK-sit-ər) is a village and former civil parish, now in the parish of Wroxeter and Uppington, in the Shropshire district, in the ceremonial county of Shropshire, England. It is beside the River Severn, 5 miles (8.0 km) south-east of Shrewsbury. In 1961 the parish had a population of 657.Viroconium Cornoviorum, the fourth largest city in Roman Britain, was sited here, and is gradually being excavated.

St Andrew's Church is a redundant Church of England parish church in the village of Wroxeter, Shropshire, England. It is recorded in the National Heritage List for England as a designated Grade I listed building, and is under the care of the Churches Conservation Trust. Both the village of Wroxeter and the church are in the southwest corner of the former Roman town of Viroconium.

Withington is a village and parish in Shropshire, England. The parish is very small (both in area covered and population – 220 people) and is located on the Shropshire Council/Telford and Wrekin Council boundary.

Walcot is a small village in the borough of Telford and Wrekin and ceremonial county of Shropshire, England. The village is situated equidistant between Shrewsbury and Wellington. Surrounding villages include Allscott, Withington, and Wrockwardine; Walcot forms part of the parish of Wrockwardine. Walcot Bridge (Graded II Listed) Designed by William Hayward (circa 1740–1782). Road bridge over the River Tern, not far from the confluence of the River Roden. Ashlar with 3 rusticated round-arches with keyblocks. Cutwaters have semi-circular section 'pilasters' above in the spandrels. String course and low parapet with panel at centre inscribed with date MDCCLXXXII (Roman for year 1782) and inscription "the last Edifice erected by that ingenious Architect William Hayward". The abutments splay outwards and are terminated with square piers. William Hayward also designed the bridge over the River Tern at Atcham, Shropshire and the bridge over the Thames at Henley, Oxfordshire in 1781. Walcot Hall, named after the Walcot family, is in the village of Lydbury North, 40 km (25 miles) south-west of Shrewsbury.

Walcot railway station was a station in Walcot, Shropshire, England. The station was sited on the Wolverhampton to Shrewsbury line west of Wellington (Shropshire) and opened on 1 June 1849. It closed on 7 September 1964, along with the other intermediate stations on this stretch of line. The station was demolished after closure and no trace now remains.

Charlton Castle was a fortified manor house situated in Shropshire between Shrewsbury and Telford (grid reference SJ597112). Sir John Charlton was licensed to crenellate his dwelling at Charlton in 1316. This defended manor house was known as Charlton Castle, and was apparently still used as a residence of the Lords of Powys in the earlier part of the 16th century. In 1588 it was sold to Francis Newport but then fell into disrepair. The site is on Historic England's Heritage at Risk Register due to being very overgrown .

Eyton on Severn (pronounced: Eye-ton on Severn) is a small village in the English county of Shropshire, east of Shrewsbury. It is located on a ridge above the northern bank of the River Severn. The significant tributary of the Cound Brook joins the Severn at Eyton, albeit on the opposite bank. Wroxeter, the village located at a ruined Roman city, is only a mile north-west of the village. The hamlet of Dryton is just east of Eyton. All lie in the parish of Wroxeter and Uppington. There is a historical octagonal tower here, built in 1607 as the summerhouse of a mansion then belonging to the Newport family of High Ercall. Edward Herbert, 1st Baron Herbert of Cherbury, whose mother was a Newport, was born there in 1583 and lived there till the age of nine. Sir Francis Newport rebuilt the mansion in a version completed by 1595, Walter Hancock being its master mason, but only the tower remains from his lifetime.The Shrewsbury architect Thomas Farnolls Pritchard lived in the tower at Eyton from 1769 until his death in 1777.There is also a racecourse, with point-to-point races held mainly on bank holidays and other special occasions.

The River Roden is a river in Shropshire, England, which rises near Wem Moss where the Llangollen Canal passes above its headwaters. It flows south east and meets the River Tern at Walcot. Villages and towns it flows through or near to, include: Wem Aston Lee Brockhurst Shawbury Roden Rodington
