Fort Ninigret

Ninigret is a coastal lagoon in Charlestown, Rhode Island, in the United States, located at 41°22′45″N 71°38′43″W. It is the largest of the nine lagoons, or "salt ponds", in southern Rhode Island. It is utilized for recreational activities, as well as oyster and quahog harvesting. Found along its shores are "extensive" archaeological remains. Ninigret Pond, like others in the region, was "formed after the recession of the glaciers 12,000 years ago". The pond is situated on low-lying ground, and as such, it is considered particularly vulnerable to storm surge flooding. It is connected to Green Hill Pond via a small channel.The pond is located within the Ninigret National Wildlife Refuge. Both are named for Ninigret, a 17th-century sachem of the eastern Niantic aboriginal American tribe.

The District Schoolhouse No. 2 is a historic school building on Old Post Road (Rhode Island Route 1A) in the Cross Mills section of Charlestown, Rhode Island. The single-story Greek Revival structure was built c. 1838, and originally stood in the Quonochontaug area, before being moved to its present location (along with its foundation stones) in 1973. The schoolhouse is the best-preserved of Charlestown's eight 19th-century schoolhouses, and is now maintained by the Charlestown Historical Society.The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1980.

Charlestown is a census-designated place (CDP) in Washington County, Rhode Island, United States, comprising the main village in the town of Charlestown and additional land extending to the east into the town of South Kingstown. It was first listed as a CDP prior to the 2020 census.Charlestown is in southern Washington County, on the north side of Ninigret Pond, a tidal lagoon connected to Block Island Sound. The community is in the southeast part of the town of Charlestown and the southwest part of the town of South Kingstown. The village of Charlestown is in the northwest part of the CDP, at the northern head of Ninigret Pond. The hamlet of Charlestown Beach is in the southern part of the CDP, separated by a tidal inlet from the physical Charlestown Beach along the Atlantic. The CDP continues east into South Kingstown, on the north side of Green Hill Pond. U.S. Route 1 forms the northern edge of the Charlestown CDP; the highway leads northeast 10 miles (16 km) to Narragansett and west 11 miles (18 km) to Westerly.

The Indian Burial Ground is a historic Native American cemetery on Narrow Lane in Charlestown, Rhode Island. The small (0.1-acre (0.040 ha)) cemetery is believed to have been the burying ground for leaders of the Narragansett and Niantic tribes. It is now fenced off by an iron post and rail fence, erected in the late 19th century.The cemetery was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1970.

Charlestown Breachway State Beach is a seaside public recreation area on Block Island Sound in the town of Charlestown, Rhode Island. It is located on the east side of the manmade channel (the "Breachway") that connects Ninigret Pond with the Atlantic Ocean.

Washington County, known locally as South County, is a county located in the U.S. state of Rhode Island. As of the 2020 census, the population was 129,839. Rhode Island counties have no governmental functions other than as court administrative boundaries, which are part of the state government.

The Narragansett people are an Algonquian American Indian tribe from Rhode Island. Today, Narragansett people are enrolled in the federally recognized Narragansett Indian Tribe. They gained federal recognition in 1983. The tribe was nearly landless for most of the 20th century but acquired land in 1991 in their lawsuit Carcieri v. Salazar, and they petitioned the Department of the Interior to take the land into trust on their behalf. This would have made the newly acquired land to be officially recognized as part of the Narragansett Indian reservation, taking it out from under Rhode Island's legal authority. In 2009, the United States Supreme Court ruled against the request, declaring that tribes which had achieved federal recognition since the 1934 Indian Reorganization Act did not have standing to have newly acquired lands taken into federal trust and removed from state control.

The Historic Village of the Narragansetts in Charlestown is an historic district in Charlestown, Rhode Island encompassing what were for nearly two centuries the reservation lands of the Narragansett people. The district covers 5,600 acres (23 km2) and is bounded by Route 112 on the east, U.S. Route 1 on the south, King's Factory Road (Bureau of Indian Affairs Route 411) on the west, and Route 91 on the north. These lands served as the Narragansett reservation between 1709 and 1880, when the tribe sold the land to the state and was formally detribalized. Because of this long period of Native occupation, the area is archaeologically important, containing both historic and prehistoric artifacts. The Narragansetts have since received federal recognition. The district was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1973.

Watchaug Pond is a kettle pond (lake) located in southern Rhode Island, in the town of Charlestown. It is surrounded by the John Vincent Gormley 8-mile loop trail which was dedicated by Senator Jack Reed in 1999. The Vin Gormley trail is the second to last leg of the North-South Trail that transects the state. In addition it is near the Audubon Society's Kimball Wildlife Refuge. The 573-acre (2.32 km2) pond is within 3,000 acres (12 km2) of public land. There is a public cement boat ramp on Sanctuary Road. The Kettle Pond Visitor Center, operated by U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the Rhode Island National Wildlife Refuge, hosts school field trips and educational programs about the pond's flora, fauna and habitats.

Burlingame State Park is a public recreation area located in the town of Charlestown, Rhode Island. The state park's 3,100 acres (1,300 ha) offer camping, hiking, and water activities on Watchaug Pond. The park's campground abuts the Burlingame Management Area and Kimball Wildlife Sanctuary.

Sly Fox Den Too is an Indigenous restaurant in Charlestown, Rhode Island. The menu has included three-sisters succotash, venison sandwiches, and smoked fish. The business earned Sherry Pocknett a James Beard Foundation Award in the Best Chef: Northeast category.
