Shinnecock Hills Golf Club is a links-style golf club located in an unincorporated area of the Town of Southampton on Long Island, New York, situated between the Peconic Bay and the Atlantic Ocean.Shinnecock Hills is believed to be the oldest incorporated golf club in the United States (1891), to have the oldest golf clubhouse in the U.S. (1892), and to have been the first American golf club to admit women members, which it did from the start. It is also the only golf course to host the U.S. Open in three different centuries. Shinnecock Hills is a founding member of the United States Golf Association. It has hosted several important events, notably five U.S. Opens, most recently being the 2018 event won by Brooks Koepka. It is scheduled to host a sixth in 2026. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2000. It is routinely ranked as one of the greatest golf courses in the world.

The 2018 United States Open Championship was the 118th U.S. Open, held June 14–17 at Shinnecock Hills Golf Club in Shinnecock Hills, New York, about eighty miles (130 km) east of New York City on Long Island; it was the fifth time the U.S. Open was held at this course. Defending champion Brooks Koepka shot a final round 68 for 281 (+1) to win his second straight U.S. Open, one stroke ahead of runner-up Tommy Fleetwood, who closed with the sixth round of 63 in U.S. Open history. Koepka was only the third to successfully defend the title since World War II, following Ben Hogan (1951) and Curtis Strange (1989). The USGA changed the playoff format in February, from a full round (18 holes) to a two-hole aggregate playoff. Previously, playoffs at the U.S. Open were 18 holes, followed by sudden-death, if needed. The last 18-hole playoff was in 2008, won by Tiger Woods on the first sudden-death hole.

The 2004 United States Open Championship was the 104th U.S. Open, held June 17–20 at Shinnecock Hills Golf Club in Shinnecock Hills, New York. Retief Goosen won his second U.S. Open title, two strokes ahead of runner-up Phil Mickelson, the reigning Masters champion. The purse was $6.25 million with a winner's share of $1.125 million. Late on Sunday in dry and breezy conditions, Goosen birdied the 16th hole and Mickelson double-bogeyed the par-3 17th. Goosen's previous U.S. Open win was in 2001 in a playoff at Southern Hills.

The 1995 U.S. Open was the 95th U.S. Open, held June 15–18 at Shinnecock Hills Golf Club in Southampton, New York. It marked the 100th anniversary of the U.S. Open. Corey Pavin won his only major championship, two strokes ahead of runner-up Greg Norman. Norman opened with rounds of 68-67, then fell back with 74 in the third round; Tom Lehman's 67 on Saturday tied Norman for the 54-hole lead. Phil Mickelson and Bob Tway were a stroke back at even par, while Pavin was at 212 (+2), tied for fifth with four others.In the final round, Norman and Lehman were still tied at the turn, but Lehman bogeyed 11 and Norman bogeyed 12. Pavin had birdied 12, which brought him into a tie with Norman, Lehman, and Tway. Norman and Tway each then suffered bogeys, while Pavin took sole possession of the lead with a birdie at 15. Even with a Norman birdie at the 15th, his first since the opening hole of the third round, nobody could catch Pavin. He sealed the victory with a 4-wood approach to the 18th, running down the fairway as the ball was in the air and raising his hands in triumph after it ran onto the green. He carded a 68 for an even-par 280, two ahead of Norman, who shot 73. In the final round, Neal Lancaster set a new U.S. Open record with a 29 on the back nine. Nineteen-year-old Tiger Woods, the reigning U.S. Amateur champion, played in his first U.S. Open but withdrew during the second round with a wrist injury. This was the third U.S. Open at Shinnecock Hills; it previously hosted in 1896 and 1986. It returned in 2004 and 2018.

The 1896 U.S. Open was the second U.S. Open, held July 18 at Shinnecock Hills Golf Club in Southampton, New York. James Foulis won his only major title, three strokes ahead of runner-up Horace Rawlins, the defending champion. Like the first Open, it was a sideshow to the U.S. Amateur. However, there were 35 entrants and 28 finished the 36 holes. Before play began, several players signed a petition stating that they would not play if John Shippen, an African-American, and Oscar Bunn, a Native American, were allowed to play. The petition was denied, however, and the players relented. Shippen, a caddie at Shinnecock Hills, shot an opening round of 78, which placed him just two back of leader Joe Lloyd. He was in a position to win the championship until an eleven on the 13th hole of the final round, and finished tied for sixth. Foulis, the third-place finisher in the inaugural U.S. Open the year before, recorded rounds of 78-74 to prevail by three over Rawlins. Foulis' 74 set a record that was not broken until 1903, after the rubber-core ball had come into use. At 4,423 yards (4,044 m), Shinnecock Hills played as the shortest course in U.S. Open history. Its next U.S. Open was 90 years later, in 1986. By then, the course had been lengthened to 6,912 yards (6,320 m).

Southampton Campus was a rail station located along the Montauk Branch of the Long Island Rail Road. Originally a seasonal flag stop called Golf Grounds, it opened April 1907 to serve sites such as the Shinnecock Hills Golf Club and National Golf Links of America and was closed in 1938.In order to serve the Long Island University's Southampton College (now owned by Stony Brook University) it reopened on May 24, 1976. It was discontinued as a station stop and removed on March 16, 1998, due to low usage, along with a handful of other Long Island Rail Road stations. The station only had an average daily ridership of 16 and the low ridership did not make it cost effective for high level platforms to be installed to accommodate new bilevel rail cars.A temporary station was opened in June 2004 for the U.S. Open and was listed as Shinnecock Hills on special timetables. The same situation occurred in 2018 during the 2018 U.S. Open Golf Championship. The Long Island Rail Road also provided service for spectators traveling to the 1986 U.S. Open, when the station was called Southampton College.

Tuckahoe is a hamlet and census-designated place (CDP) in the Town of Southampton, Suffolk County, New York, United States. The population was 1,373 at the 2010 census.

Stony Brook Southampton is a campus location of Stony Brook University, located in Southampton, New York between the Shinnecock Indian Reservation and Shinnecock Hills Golf Club on the eastern end of Long Island.

WLIW-FM (88.3 FM) is a radio station licensed to Southampton, New York and serving eastern Long Island and coastal Connecticut. Owned by The WNET Group, it is a sister station to PBS member television station WLIW, and features programming from American Public Media, NPR and Public Radio Exchange. The station also broadcasts in HD.It is the only NPR station based on Long Island (population about 8 million). It is one of three public radio stations broadcast to eastern Long Island. The other stations are Connecticut-based WNPR, WSHU-FM and WSUF, which access the market via repeater stations.In addition to its to NPR programming, local programs include jazz, rhythm and blues, world music and music from Broadway theater, as well as "Heart of the East End" with Gianna Volpe, "The Afternoon Ramble" with Brian Cosgrove and "The Urban Jazz Experience" with Ed German.

National Golf Links of America is a prestigious links-style golf course in Southampton, New York, located on Long Island between Shinnecock Hills Golf Club and Peconic Bay. Though the course is noted for hosting the initial Walker Cup in 1922, which the United States won 8 and 4, it has never hosted a major men's championship. The Walker Cup was again held at the National in 2013. The private club has been called "America's snootiest golf course" due to its exclusive nature.

The 1922 Walker Cup, the first Walker Cup Match, was a team golf match played on August 28 and 29, 1922 at the National Golf Links of America in Southampton, New York. The United States won 8 to 4. There had been heavy rain for several days before the event and course was very wet.

The 44th Walker Cup Match was played on September 7 and 8, 2013 at the National Golf Links of America in Southampton, New York. The United States won 17 to 9.
