The First Presbyterian Church in Lexington, Kentucky is a historic church at 171 Market Street. The church was designed by the important Lexington architect Cincinnatus Shryock who was also an elder at First Church. The original congregational name was the Mount Zion Church, founded in 1784, making it one of the oldest churches in Lexington, KY. The name was changed when they moved to the present day building in 1874.It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1974.

The Hunt–Morgan House, historically known as Hopemont, is a Federal style residence in Lexington, Kentucky built in 1814 by John Wesley Hunt, the first millionaire west of the Alleghenies. The house is included in the Gratz Park Historic District. The Alexander T. Hunt Civil War Museum is located on the second floor of the Hunt–Morgan House.Other notable people who resided at Hopemont include John Wesley Hunt's great-grandson, Thomas Hunt Morgan. Born in the house in 1866, he became the first Kentuckian to win the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine. The house has many beautiful architectural features, including the Palladian window with fan and sidelights that grace its front façade. In 1955 the Blue Grass Trust for Historic Preservation was formed to save this home from impending demolition. The organization restored the home to its Federal appearance.The Hunt–Morgan House is located on the corner of Mill and Second Streets, at 201 N. Mill Street, in Gratz Park in Lexington, Kentucky. The Bluegrass Trust for Historic Preservation still maintains the Hunt–Morgan House.

Gratz Park is a neighborhood and historic district located just north of downtown Lexington, Kentucky. It was named after early Lexington businessman Benjamin Gratz whose home stands on the corner of Mill and New streets at the edge of Gratz Park. The Gratz Park Historic District consists of 16 contributing buildings including the Hunt-Morgan House, the Bodley-Bullock House, the original Carnegie Library in Lexington, and several other private residences. Gratz Park occupies a tract of land that was established in 1781 outside the original boundaries of Lexington. The Park was the original site of Transylvania College until the building was destroyed by fire in 1829. The Transylvania campus was moved across Third Street to its present location. At the northern edge of the park is the "Fountain of Youth," built in memory of Lexington author James Lane Allen using proceeds willed to the city by Allen. The park was deeded to the city of Lexington during the mid-20th century and is still used as a public park today. The Gratz Park is bounded by West Third and West Second streets on the north and south, and by the buildings that line Mill and Market streets on the west and east. The park is open to the public. The Historic Christ Church Cathedral is located at the edge of the district at 166 Market Street. Several houses within the district are open to the public. The historic district includes 18 buildings in total.One is the 1904 or 1905 or 1906-built Classical Revival-style Carnegie library, at the south end of the park, designed by architect Herman L. Rowe (see photo 5 accompanying the NRHP document). It has a tetrastyle portico (observed in photo). It was built in 1906 of Bedford limestone at cost of $75,000. It was eventually replaced as the Lexington Public Library by a new, large central library on East Main Street.

Christ Church Cathedral is the seat of the Episcopal Diocese of Lexington and is located at 166 Market Street, Lexington, Kentucky. Founded in 1796, Christ Church Cathedral is the oldest Episcopal church in the Commonwealth of Kentucky. Renovations over the years have sought to preserve the original structure, and it remains relatively unchanged. The church created what is now called the Old Episcopal Burying Ground, located nearby. It held many who died during the cholera epidemics of 1833 and 1848, but most of the remains have been moved due to flooding. Working with the Martin Luther King Neighborhood Association and Seedleaf, the cathedral has established a community garden. It is operated primarily to grow vegetables for nearby residents, and encourages their participation in all steps: growing, harvesting, preparing and preserving. Hundreds of pounds of vegetables are given away annually to residents and community associations. In 2009 the garden was enlarged to include fruit trees and berry bushes.In recent outreach, Christ Church Cathedral has supported recognition of London Ferrill, the second preacher of First African Baptist Church. He led his church for 31 years, by 1850 building a congregation of 1,820 members, the largest of any in the state. He was one of the few clergy to stay in the city during the 1833 cholera epidemic, when 500 died of a total of 7,000 people in the city, including nearly one-third of the congregation of Christ Church. At death in 1854, Ferrill was buried in the Old Episcopal Burying Ground, the only African American to be so honored. In 2010 Christ Church supported installation of a monument to Ferrill at the burying ground, celebrating with a joint service with First African Baptist. They also supported approval of a state highway marker for the site. In addition, Christ Church named its community garden in honor of London Ferrill.The Bishop Provisional of the Episcopal Diocese of Lexington is currently Mark Van Koevering.

The Carnegie Library in Lexington, Kentucky was built in 1905 and served as Lexington's main library until 1989. It is now home of the Carnegie Center for Literacy and Learning. It is one of 29 sites on a National Park Service-recommended list of places to visit in Lexington, "Lexington, Kentucky: Athens of the West, a National Register of Historic Places Travel Itinerary.The building is a 1906-built Classical Revival-style Carnegie library, at the south end of Gratz Park, designed by architect Herman L. Rowe. It has a tetrastyle portico (observed in photo). It was built in 1906 of Bedford limestone at cost of $75,000, of which $60,000 was funded by the Carnegie Foundation. It was eventually replaced as the Lexington Public Library by a new, large central library on East Main Street.The library is listed on the National Register of Historic Places as a contributing building in the Gratz Park Historic District, listed in 1973. It is one of 18 buildings in the district.It was one of 2,500 public libraries built by Andrew Carnegie's funding between 1883 and 1929. The building reopened as the Carnegie Center in 1992.

Monsieur Giron's Confectionery in Lexington, Kentucky, is a 2-story Greek Revival building constructed of brick in 1829. The building replaced an earlier wood frame building at the site, also occupied by Monsieur Giron's Confectionery. A 50-ft ballroom on the second floor was partitioned by folding doors into two spaces. Originally seven bays wide, only three bays in the north half of the building remain. The building's remnant was added to the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) in 1974.

The Old Fayette County Courthouse (Kentucky) is a mixed-use commercial and civic office building located at 215 West Main Street in downtown Lexington, Kentucky, USA. It was originally built in 1898–1900 and designed by Cleveland-based architects Lehman & Schmitt, the fifth structure to be used as the Fayette County Courthouse. The building now contains civic offices, event spaces, and commercial retail space. It has been called the "most iconic building in Lexington."

Cheapside Park was a block in downtown Lexington, Kentucky between Upper Street and Mill Street. Cheapside, originally Public Square, was the town's main marketplace in the nineteenth century and included a large slave market before the Civil War. Cheapside Park played a prominent role in the slave trade, many enslaved people sold here were moved to the lower South, or forced to work in the local areas. The local market served as a conglomerate of local slave traders, slaveholders, and other related individuals. Cheapside Park was renamed Henry A. Tandy Centennial Park, primarily due to local displeasure with the historical context and connotation of the former name. Since renamed, for previously enslaved Henry A. Tandy, it is currently home to the Lexington Farmers Market and popular events like Thursday Night Live.

The Opera House and Yates Bookshop Building in Lexington, Kentucky, are adjacent buildings listed together on the National Register of Historic Places in 1975, and they are contributing resources in the North Broadway-Short Street Historic District. The 3-story Lexington Opera House was designed by Oscar Cobb and constructed by Herman L. Rowe in 1886 after a fire earlier that year destroyed Lexington's previous opera house. The Opera House has been described either as Gothic Revival or Queen Anne in its facade. Above the third floor, the facade features a prominent sheet iron relief decoration with the appearance of cut stone.The 3-story Yates Bookshop Building was constructed about two years after an 1873 fire destroyed the Broadway Hotel. The Italianate building was part of a row of buildings completed after the fire, one of only a few of the buildings to survive urban renewal in the 20th century.

The Abraham Barton House in Lexington, Kentucky, is a 2+1⁄2-story Greek Revival structure dating from 1795. The house was constructed in multiple stages, and the original dwelling faced Second Street. Architect Gideon Shryock is credited both for the Greek Revival expansion and remodel in the early 1830s and for changing the front exposure to face North Upper Street. The House was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1977.

The Lexington Opera House is a theatre located at 401 West Short Street in downtown Lexington, Kentucky. Built in 1886, the Opera House replaced the former theatre, located on the corner of Main and Broadway, after fire destroyed it in January 1886. The new Opera House was designed by the renowned architect Oscar Cobb and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places for its historical and architectural significance. It is currently owned and operated by the Lexington Center Corporation, and it hosts ballets, opera, children's productions, family shows, comedy, music and professional national Broadway tours. The Lexington Opera House is one of 14 theatres in the country built before 1900 with less than 1,000 seats that is still in operation as a live performance venue.

The Fayette Safety Vault and Trust Company Building in Lexington, Kentucky, is a commercial building designed by Herman L. Rowe and constructed in 1890. The stone facade was described as "a strange but compelling mixture of Italianate, Neo-Greek, Gothic, and Romanesque motifs," and "not excelled in appearance by any building in Kentucky." It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1980.The building was constructed for the Fayette Safety Vault and Trust Company, organized in 1890 and absorbed by the larger Security Trust and Safety Vault Company in 1892. An early tenant of the building was Lexington's Moving Picture Theatorium.Architect Herman L. Rowe also designed Lexington's Carnegie library in the Gratz Park Historic District and Argyle Hall at the former Campbell–Hagerman College. He was the supervising architect for the Lexington Opera House, designed by Oscar Cobb and constructed in 1887. The Opera House and Yates Bookshop Building were listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1975.
