Knockin Castle is situated in the village of Knockin on Shropshire between Oswestry and Shrewsbury (grid reference SJ334223), England. This was a motte-and-bailey castle founded by Guy le Strange between 1154 and 1160 and it remained the principal holding of the le Strange family for most of the Middle Ages. The castle was damaged in the First Barons' War during the reign of King John and then repaired by John le Strange. It was described as being 'ruinous' in 1540. All that remains of Knockin Castle today is a large tree-covered mound of earth.

Pop., 135."The name is thought to be derived from the conflation of the name Cynfyn and the Anglo Saxon term "aston", meaning east town. The place name appears in the 1086 Domesday Book in the spelling of 'Chimerstun', and it has been suggested that this translates as 'The place in the hollow'.This Kynaston pre-dates the village in Herefordshire also called Kynaston. The name is intimately linked with the Kynaston family, the first to carry the surname being Gruffydd Kynaston of Cae Howel, a settlement in the locality. It is not clear whether the hamlet was named after the family or vica versa.

Melverley is a village in Shropshire, England, situated on the River Severn and the River Vyrnwy, near the Powys hills and the border with Wales. The population of the civil parish at the 2011 census was 156. The village, and the large rural area that surrounds it, was years ago famous for flooding from the nearby rivers but since the extensive defences being installed in Shrewsbury and improvements to the flood defences in and around the Melverley area flooding causes no problems for the majority of residents. It is a controlled flood area, meaning that water is allowed to flow across the open fields and held for a few hours until the river levels fall. Melverley Green is a small village to the north of Melverley.
