As the initial territory of the March of Brandenburg, it is sometimes referred to as the "Cradle of Prussia", as by Otto von Bismarck, a native from Schönhausen near Stendal.

Goliath transmitter

Goliath transmitter was a very low frequency (VLF) transmitter for communicating with submarines, built by Nazi Germany's Kriegsmarine navy near Kalbe an der Milde in Saxony-Anhalt, Germany, which was in service from 1943 to 1945. It was capable of transmission power of between 100 and 1000 kW and was the most powerful transmitter of its time.

It was situated east of Salzwedel, and north of Gardelegen. The seat of the Verwaltungsgemeinschaft was in Arendsee. It was disbanded on 1 January 2010. Kalbe (German pronunciation: [ˈkalbə] ) is a town in the Altmarkkreis Salzwedel (district), in Saxony-Anhalt, Germany. It is situated approximately 15 km north of Gardelegen, on the river Milde. To avoid confusion with Calbe, it is also called Kalbe an der Milde. Kalbe an der Milde was the location of the World War II German Naval VLF Goliath transmitter complex. Kalbe is home to D. Dornblüth & Sohn, a small luxury watch maker.
