Dolgoch Falls

Dolgoch slate quarry (also spelt Dol-goch slate quarry or Dol-gôch slate quarry) was a slate quarry in Mid Wales, approximately halfway between Bryn-crug and Abergynolwyn (4 miles (6.4 km) away from each of them). The quarry was named after a nearby stream, the Nant Dolgoch (then known as the Nant Dol-gôch). 'Dol goch' is Welsh for 'red meadow'. The slate at Dolgoch is described as silver-grey in colour; this is very similar to the slate from Bryn Eglwys quarry and the quarries around Corris.Although the quarry had favourable transportation arrangements compared to many quarries in the area, it was never worked on a significant scale, and was short-lived – opening in 1877 and closing in 1884.

Dolgoch railway station (also known as Dol-goch railway station, Dol-gôch railway station, or Dolgoch Falls railway station) is a station on the Talyllyn Railway between Tywyn and Abergynolwyn, Gwynedd in north-Wales. It is 4 miles 72 chains (4.90 miles, 7.89 km) from Tywyn Wharf. Unlike most places on the line, the station was built for tourist traffic, for visitors to the local Dolgoch Falls.To the west of the station, there is three-span brick viaduct that carries the railway over the Dolgoch Ravine. This is the largest engineering structure on the railway; it is 52 feet (16 m) high. It is also a grade II listed structure. The railway passes through rock cuttings either side of the viaduct.This is an important stopping point, despite the lack of significant passenger facilities, because all steam trains take water here on the "up" (eastwards) journey, from one of the two "up" tanks; it is important on the "down" (westwards) journey because all passengers have their tickets checked here on the down journey. There are three water towers in total at the station; two at the east end of the station for up trains, and one at the west end for down trains. The original water tower is the western of the up towers.The name 'Dol-gôch' means 'Red-meadow'. It was taken from the nearby stream, the Nant Dolgoch (known at the time as the Nant Dol-gôch).

Abertrinant is a small settlement in Gwynedd, Wales. It is 7 kilometres (4 mi) northeast of the town of Tywyn.

Craig yr Aderyn, also known as Bird's Rock, is a hill rising to a height of 258 metres (846 ft) above sea level on the south bank of the River Dysynni near Llanfihangel-y-Pennant in the county of Gwynedd, north-west Wales. Craig yr Aderyn has been designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest because of the choughs and other birds that breed there.

Abergynolwyn railway station is a station on the Talyllyn Railway near Abergynolwyn, Gwynedd, in Mid-Wales. It is 6.55 miles (10.54 km) from Tywyn Wharf. The name 'Abergynolwyn' means 'Mouth-of-the-River-with-a-Whirlpool'.

Brynglas railway station (also known as Bryn-glas railway station) is a request stop on the Talyllyn Railway, serving the hamlet of Pandy near Bryn-crug, in Gwynedd, Mid-Wales. It is 3.17 miles (5.10 km) from Tywyn Wharf. A station building and platform are provided on the north side of the track, as the railway's carriages have been modified to have doors only on this side for safety reasons. The station building is a Grade II listed structure.The name 'Brynglas' was taken from a local farm, and means 'Blue hill'.There are level crossings on both sides of the station: one to the east, for a farm track, and on to the west, for the public road to Pandy. The road crossing was originally a brick arch bridge, which now serves as a cattle creep. There is also a bridge over the Afon Cwm-Pandy. The station was originally situated between the two bridges, but the platform has since been extended in both directions such that it now stretches between both level crossings. The river bridge was rebuilt to carry the extended platform.

Mynydd Esgairweddan is a hill near Pennal in southern Gwynedd, Wales (grid reference SH6702). Nearby is the tiny settlement of Esgairweddan. It is very close to the site of the old Roman fort of Cefn Caer (Pennal). The area was described in the Topographical Dictionary of Wales by Samuel Lewis (published 1833) as; "A tract of hilly and rocky ground but little adapted for purposes of agriculture. The soil is thin and poor, but, in some of the lower grounds, not altogether unproductive; the declivities of the hills afford only a scanty pasturage for sheep and young cattle: peat, which forms the principal fuel of the inhabitants, is found in various parts."

Castell y Bere is a Welsh castle near Llanfihangel-y-pennant in Gwynedd, Wales. Constructed by Llywelyn the Great in the 1220s, the stone castle was intended to maintain his authority over the local people and to defend the south-west part of the princedom of Gwynedd. In 1282, war with Edward I of England resulted in the death of Llywelyn's grandson, Llywelyn ap Gruffudd, and Castell y Bere fell to English forces. Edward I expanded the castle further and established a small town beside it. In 1294 the Welsh leader Madog ap Llywelyn mounted a major revolt and the castle was besieged and apparently burnt. Edward did not repair it and it became ruined. Today it is in the hands of Cadw and operated as a tourist attraction.

Tarrenhendre is a mountain in Snowdonia, North Wales. It is one of the Marilyns in the Cadair Idris group. Lying to the south of Cadair Idris, it and its neighbour Tarren y Gesail form the bulk of the Tarren subgroup. The Tarrens rise from the south shore of the Tal-y-llyn Lake and end at the Dyfi estuary. The summit is heathery and boggy, and has a small cairn to mark the highest point. The views are extensive to the south and east, with Plynlimon and Cardigan Bay ahead, while the north views are dominated by Cadair Idris and Maesglase to the west. Between Tarren Hendre and Tarren y Gesail lies the Bryn Eglwys quarry, and Nant Gwernol railway station on the Talyllyn Railway, in the ravine of the Nant Gwernol stream. The Tarrens can be thought of as forgotten mountains of Snowdonia, overshadowed by the popularity of Cadair Idris, occupying the sleepy south-western frontier of the Snowdonia national park.

Abergynolwyn (English: Mouth of the River with a Whirlpool) is a village in southern Gwynedd, Wales, located at the confluence of the Nant Gwernol and the Afon Dysynni. The population of the community which is named after the village of Llanfihangel-y-Pennant was 339 at the 2011 census.

Nant Gwernol railway station is the eastern terminus of the Talyllyn Railway near Abergynolwyn, Gwynedd in mid-Wales. It is 7 miles, 28 chains (11.83 km) from Tywyn Wharf. Nant Gwernol station was opened in 1976; before 1976 this upper part of the line had only been used for goods services.The station is built on the site of the former marshalling yard at the foot of the Alltwyllt incline, which was the first of the two inclines between the Talyllyn Railway and the Bryn Eglwys slate quarry. This site was chosen as the terminus of the passenger line, as it was the limit of locomotive working. The station building is of timber construction, based on the station building at Pendre and the original station building at Abergynolwyn. Trains only wait at the station long enough for the locomotive to run round, as there are no facilities at that point. Most trains pause at Abergynolwyn station to allow passengers time for refreshments. There is no road access to the station, though several footpaths lead off up the incline or towards the road between Bryn-Eglwys and Abergynolwyn. The station's name was taken from the nearby Nant Gwernol stream, and means "Alder Stream".

Llanfihangel-y-Pennant is a hamlet and wider, very sparsely populated community (which includes Abergynolwyn and Tal-y-llyn) in the Meirionnydd area of Gwynedd in Wales. It is located in the foothills of Cadair Idris, and has a population of 402, reducing to 339 at the 2011 Census.Nearby is the ruined castle of Castell y Bere, a stronghold of the Welsh princes of Gwynedd in the 13th century.
