Bishop Union High School (BUHS) is a public high school in Bishop, California. It is part of the Bishop Unified School District. The school is located at 301 North Fowler Street. The current principal is Erik Forsman. The superintendent is Katherine Kolker. There are currently thirty-nine teachers at Bishop Union, with a wide variety of subjects and electives. The most favored teacher, Arnie Palu, has been voted amongst the “top teachers” in the school for ~13 years. Classes at the school run from 8:30 am to 2:30 pm on Mondays and 8:30 am to 3:35 pm Tuesdays through Fridays. Numerous programs including bilingual is offered through the guidance office. The 2011–2012 academic year began August 22, 2011 and ended with graduation day on June 8, 2012. Bishop Union High School has a current enrollment of approximately 550 students. Enrollment figures in the late 1970s and into the early 1990s hovered around 1,000 students. The nearby Union Carbide mine closure, coupled with the City of Los Angeles ownership of most of the land around Bishop, therefore controlling community development, caused Bishop schools to suffer a downturn in enrollment in the late 1990s and into the 2000s.

Bishop (formerly Bishop Creek) is the only incorporated city in Inyo County, California, United States. It is located near the northern end of the Owens Valley within the Mojave Desert, at an elevation of 4,150 feet (1,260 m). The city was named after Bishop Creek, flowing out of the Sierra Nevada range; the creek was named after Samuel Addison Bishop, a settler in the Owens Valley. Bishop is a commercial and residential center, while many vacation destinations and tourist attractions in the Sierra Nevada are located nearby. The city covers approximately 1.9 square miles (4.9 km2), making it the county's largest community by population and land area. The population of the city was 3,819 at the 2020 census, down from 3,879 at the 2010 census. The population of the built-up zone containing Bishop is much larger; more than 14,500 people live in a compact area which includes Bishop, West Bishop, Dixon Lane-Meadow Creek, and the Bishop Paiute Reservation. It is by far the largest settlement in Inyo County. A number of western films were shot in Bishop, including movies starring John Wayne, Charlton Heston, and Joel McCrea.

Erick Schat's Bakkerÿ, also formatted as Erick Schat's Bakery, is a bakery in Bishop, California. It is known for its extensive bread production and its status as a pit stop to travelers along US 395 in the Eastern Sierra region. In 2021, it received 2.5 million visitors.

The Bishop Paiute Tribe, formerly known as the Paiute-Shoshone Indians of the Bishop Community of the Bishop Colony is a federally recognized tribe of Mono and Timbisha Indians of the Owens Valley, in Inyo County of eastern California. As of 2022, the United States census showed the Bishop Paiute Tribe's population at 1,914. Awani descendants are also enrolled in the Bishop Paiute Tribe.

Sierra Pacific Airlines Flight 802 was a charter flight from Bishop, California to Burbank, California that crashed into the White Mountains on the evening of March 13, 1974. The aircraft, carrying a movie production crew, crashed for undetermined reasons, killing all 36 occupants on board. To this day, the crash remains one of only three aviation accidents to be unsolved by the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), and it stands as the fourth-deadliest crash of a Convair CV-440 to date.

San Francis Ranch was the ranch of Owens Valley pioneer Samuel A. Bishop and his wife, located on a creek later named for him (Bishop Creek) southwest of modern Bishop, California, also named after him.

Poleta () is an unincorporated community in Inyo County, California. It is located on the Southern Pacific Railroad 4 miles (6.4 km) east of Bishop, at an elevation of 4058 feet (1237 m). A post office operated at Poleta from 1895 to 1923.

West Bishop is a census-designated place (CDP) in Inyo County, California, United States. The population was 2,754 at the 2020 census, up from 2,607 at the 2010 census.

Owensville (also, Glen Mary) is a former settlement in Inyo County, California. It was located west of the future site of the modern-day town of Laws. Owensville was started as a mining camp in 1863. By 1871 it had been abandoned. The former settlement site is on U.S. Route 6 north of Bishop, California. A post office operated at Owensville from 1866 to 1870, when it was transferred to Bishop, California (then called Bishop Creek). From 1868 to 1869, the town was called Glen Mary. The site is now registered as California Historical Landmark #230 as the "First Permanent White Habitation in Owens Valley" assigned on June 20, 1935. The California Historical Landmark reads: NO. 230 FIRST PERMANENT WHITE HABITATION IN OWENS VALLEY - In August of 1861, A. Van Fleet and three other men drove their cattle into Owens Valley and prepared to stay. A cabin of sod and stone was built at the big bend of the Owens River at the northern end of the valley.
