Newton Ketton

Newton Ketton Meadow is a Site of Special Scientific Interest in the Darlington district of Durham, England. It is situated alongside a small tributary of the River Skerne, about 2 km south-west of the village of Great Stainton and 3 km east of the village of Brafferton. The site is one of the few remaining traditional hay meadows on the coastal plain between the River Tees and the River Tyne and supports a rich variety of species characteristic of this habitat. Great burnet, Sanguisorba officinalis, is present in abundance, as are herbs such as sneezewort, Achillea ptarmica, cuckooflower, Cardamine pratensis, meadowsweet, Filipendula ulmaria, and common spotted orchid, Dactylorhiza fuchsii. Grasses include sweet vernal-grass, Anthoxanthum odoratum, common bent, Agrostis capillaris, and downy oat-grass, Avenula pubescens. There are also a notable variety of sedges, including glaucous sedge, Carex flacca, hairy sedge, C. hirta, tawny sedge, C. hostiana, carnation sedge, C. panicea, and flea sedge, C. pulicaris.

It is situated between Darlington and Newton Aycliffe, a short distance from Coatham Mundeville. Brafferton itself has few amenities, but nearby is the Darlington town centre, a local public house - The Foresters Arms - and the Hall Garth Hotel. Brafferton is near the A1 junction 59. The Durham Ox was bred at Ketton Hall in Brafferton.

Great Stainton is a village in the borough of Darlington and ceremonial county of County Durham, England. It is situated to the north of Darlington, and to the west of Stockton-on-Tees. Elstob is a hamlet, just north of Great Stainton, which is part of the Parish of Great Stainton. The population as taken at the Census 2011 was less than 100. Details are now maintained in the parish of Little Stainton.

Redcar Field is a Site of Special Scientific Interest in the Darlington district of County Durham, England. It is situated just north of Darlington, about 1 km south of the village of Coatham Mundeville. The site, which is one of the few spring-fed areas on the magnesian limestone of County Durham, has a variety of fen vegetation types such as are not found together elsewhere in the county, including the only example of fen-meadow in the region. The fen meadow, in which blunt-flowered rush, Juncus subnodulosus, is dominant, grades into open flushes. These are carpeted with fern-leaved hook-moss, Cratoneuron filicinum, curled hook-moss, Palustriella commutata, and pointed spear-moss, Calliergon cuspidatum, and support typical fen herbs such as marsh valerian, Valeriana dioica, and early marsh orchid, Dactylorhiza incarnata. Another, and more extensive, fen type is tall fen, dominated by common reed, Phragmites australis, and great willow herb, Epilobium hirsutum. On the edge of the tall fen, the locally scarce meadow rue, Thalictrum flavum, is plentiful. About one-quarter of the site is occupied by willow carr, dominated by crack willow, Salix fragilis, beneath which the field layer contains a mix of tall fen and woodland plants, the latter including wood avens, Geum rivale, male fern, Dryopteris filix-mas, and, at the edge of the carr, globe flower, Trollius europaeus.

The A167 and A167(M) is a road in North East England. It is partially a trunk road and partially a motorway, where it is commonly referred to as Newcastle Central Motorway. Most of the road’s route was formerly that of the A1, until it was re-routed with the opening of the A1(M) in the 1960s.

Haughton-le-Skerne is a village in the borough of Darlington in the ceremonial county of County Durham, England. It is situated in the north east of Darlington. The village lies to the west of the River Skerne. At the centre of the village green, is the main road towards Darlington town centre going across the river, south of the church. There used to be a linen mill on the riverbank on the east side of the village. Part of the mill leat can still be seen today. St Andrew's Church at the west end of the village green is the oldest church in Darlington, circa 1125. Some of the stones may have originated in a previous church on the same site. Parts of the existing rectory have monastic ruins built into the foundation and some inner walls, speculated to be evidence of an earlier building on this site. On the north side of Haughton-le-Skerne, a turnpike led over the river to the ports on the Tees estuary, carrying traffic including salt from the Bishop's salt mines. Haughton-le-Skerne is now connected to a large suburb of Darlington, with areas including Springfield and Whinfield. The community was referred to in the ITV series Downton Abbey as it was the location where Mrs. Beryl Patmore (Lesley Nicol) would find a cottage which would serve as a boarding house, and when she retired, would serve as her home for her retirement days. John Wrightson (1840-1916), founder of Downton Agricultural College and great grandfather of Downton writer Julian Fellowes was born in the village.

Haughton Academy, (formerly Haughton Community School), is often simply referred to as Haughton and is an 11–16 mixed secondary school with academy status in Darlington, County Durham, England. Previously a community school administered by Darlington Borough Council, Haughton Community School converted to academy status in April 2012 and was renamed Haughton Academy. The school is part of the Education Village Academy Trust.
