Winestead railway station

Patrington railway station is a disused railway station on the North Eastern Railway's Hull and Holderness Railway in Patrington, East Riding of Yorkshire, England. It was opened by the Hull and Holderness Railway on 27 June 1854. The station was closed to passengers on 19 October 1964.

Winestead is a village in the civil parish of Patrington, in the East Riding of Yorkshire, England, in an area known as Holderness. It is situated approximately seven miles (eleven kilometres) south-east of Hedon and 1+1⁄2 miles (2.5 kilometres) north-west of Patrington. It is situated to the north of the A1033 road. In 1931 the parish had a population of 153. On 1 April 1935 the parish was abolished and merged with Patrington. The name Winestead possibly derives from the Old English wīfstede meaning 'women's place'. Another theory derives it from Wifastede or Wifestede, meaning 'Wifa/Wife's place'. It is also the ancient seat of the Hildyard/Hilliard/Hildegardis family, whose ancestry is believed to be of Saxon origin. The Hildyard family of Winestead became extinct on the death of Sir Robert D'Arcy Hildyard, Bart., who died without heirs in 1814. Hildyard bequeathed his estates to his niece, Ann Catherine Whyte, who married in the following year Thomas Blackborne Thoroton, Esq., of Flintham Hall, Flintham, Nottingham. Col. Thoroton of the Coldstream Guards subsequently assumed the name and coat-of-arms of Hildyard. His heirs, who still have the surname Hildyard, reside at Flintham Hall today. The Hildyard family lived at Winestead for 10 generations, and even after the death of the last Baronet, the heirs continued to own Winestead Hall. In 1823 inhabitants in the village numbered 129. Occupations included six farmers. The church of St Germain was designated a Grade I listed building in 1966 and is now recorded in the National Heritage List for England, maintained by Historic England. The White Hall was designated a Grade II* listed building in 1966 and is now recorded in the National Heritage List for England, maintained by Historic England. Winestead was served from 1854 to 1964 by Winestead railway station on the Hull and Holderness Railway.

Patrington Haven is a hamlet in the East Riding of Yorkshire, England, in an area known as Holderness. It is situated approximately 8 miles (13 km) south-east of the town of Hedon and 1 mile (1.6 km) south-west of the village of Patrington. It forms part of the civil parish of Patrington and was historically called Havenside and had a port on the haven, an arm of water that stretched south towards the North Channel of the Humber estuary (now known as Winestead Drain). The port was closed in 1869 due to siltation of the channels which made the watercourses not able to be navigated by boats. The hamlet has a pub called the Burns Head that is directly opposite the village green with the pond stocked with fish. The village of Patrington, just 1 mile (1.6 km) away, is dominated by its church known locally as "The Queen of Holderness". Surrounding the church are four public houses, and a fifth public house in Patrington Haven itself. In Patrington Haven is an established 5 Star Award Winning Leisure Park called "Patrington Haven Leisure Park". The leisure park was established around 1985 when the RAF Station Patrington closed and the land purchased was by the leisure park. In June 2013 a memorial sculpture to the RAF station was unveiled at the site. The village was visited by the Beatles in November 1963 before playing a gig in nearby Hull. The fab four enjoyed a pint and sing-song in the Burns Head pub before returning to Hull. Spurn Point with its bird sanctuary is supported by the RSPB and is a few miles south-east of Patrington Haven village.

Along with Winestead, it was a seat of the ancient Hildyard/Hilliard/Hildegardis family. The Prime Meridian passes just to the east of Patrington. The civil parish is formed by the villages of Patrington and Winestead and the hamlet of Patrington Haven and at the 2011 census, had a population of 2,059, an increase on the 2001 UK census figure of 1,949. RAF Patrington, built during the Second World War, was a radar station and used for ground-controlled interception. In 1955, following the building of a new RAF station at nearby Holmpton, the radar site closed, being surplus to requirements. The new radar site at Holmpton was later renamed RAF Patrington. Patrington was served from 1854 to 1964 by Patrington railway station on the Hull and Holderness Railway. St Patrick's Church is an example of the decorated period of Gothic architecture. Known as the "Queen of Holderness", it is a Grade I listed building. It contains an Easter Sepulchre.

Patrington was a rural district in the East Riding of Yorkshire, England, from 1894 to 1935. The district formed the south-eastern part of the county, stretching from Hedon to Spurn. The district was created by the Local Government Act 1894. In 1935 the district was abolished by a County Review Order made under the Local Government Act 1929, and the area then formed part of the newly created Holderness Rural District. Under the Local Government Act 1972 the area became part of the larger Holderness borough in Humberside. Since 1996 it has formed part of a unitary East Riding of Yorkshire.

RAF Patrington (or Royal Air Force Patrington), was a Ground-controlled interception (GCI) station of the Royal Air Force in the East Riding of Yorkshire, England. The base was operational during the Second World War, but was replaced by RAF Holmpton during the Cold War, although Patrington's domestic site remained open until the mid-1970s to house personnel for Holmpton. Some of the buildings of the old technical site survive abandoned near to Patrington Haven, but the domestic site has had a holiday park built upon it.

Ottringham railway station is a disused railway station on the North Eastern Railway's Hull and Holderness Railway to the north of Ottringham, East Riding of Yorkshire, England.

Ottringham is a village and civil parish in the East Riding of Yorkshire, England, in an area known as Holderness. It is situated approximately 12 miles (19 km) to the east of Hull city centre and 5 miles (8 km) south-west of Withernsea. It lies on the A1033 road from Hull to Withernsea. According to the 2011 UK census, Ottringham parish had a population of 597, a reduction on the 2001 UK census figure of 637. In 1823 parish inhabitants numbered 637. Occupations included twelve farmers, some of whom were land owners, four shoemakers, three grocers, two tailors, two wheelwrights, a blacksmith, a corn miller, a horse dealer, and the landlord of the White Horse public house. Two carriers operated between the village and Hull, South Frodingham, Holmpton, and Skeckling, on Tuesdays and Fridays. Letters were received and sent on Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays by Wing's caravan [accommodation coach]. A Methodist chapel existed, built in 1815. The name Ottringham possibly derives from the Old English Oteringashām or Oteringhām, meaning 'village of Oter's people' or 'village at the otter place'. The parish church of St Wilfrid is a Grade I listed building. In November 2024 the church was placed on the Heritage at Risk Register by Historic England who gave a grant to start repairs. Ottringham was served from 1854 to 1964 by Ottringham railway station on the Hull and Holderness Railway. During the Second World War, in 1943, the BBC built a transmitting station at Ottringham, called BBC Ottringham or OSE5. Its purpose was to counter the increase in German jamming signals, and to broadcast propaganda into Germany. Following the end of the war, and with lack of funds, the station was deconstructed in 1953 and its transmitters moved to Droitwich. In 1958 a Ham class minesweeper HMS Ottringham was named after the village. Ottringham contains two public houses and a service garage. It is close to a main bus route.

Rimswell is a village and civil parish in the East Riding of Yorkshire, England, in an area known as Holderness. It is situated approximately 2 miles (3 km) north-west of Withernsea and it lies between the B1243 and B1362 roads. The civil parish is formed by the village of Rimswell and the hamlet of Waxholme. According to the 2011 UK census, Rimswell parish had a population of 235, an increase on the 2001 UK census figure of 198. The name Rimswell possibly derives from the Old English Rymiswella meaning 'Rymi's spring'. Alternatively, the first element could be derived from the Old Norse personal name Hrimr, and the second element could be the Old English swelle, referring to a 'swelling in the land'. The parish church of St Mary (now closed) is a Grade II listed building. The Prime Meridian passes just to the east of Rimswell. In 1823 Rimswell was in the parish of Owthorne, a village since lost to coastal erosion. Rimswell inhabitants numbered 129, and occupations included ten farmers, some of whom were land owners, a grocer, and the landlord of the Dog and Duck public house. A carrier operated between the village and Hull on Tuesdays.

Hollym Gate railway station is a disused railway station on the North Eastern Railway's Hull and Holderness Railway to the west of Hollym, East Riding of Yorkshire, England. It was opened in 1855. The station was closed to passengers on 1 September 1870.
