Manaia, Waikato

The Manaia River is a river of the Coromandel Peninsula in New Zealand's North Island. It flows north from its sources in the Coromandel Range, reaching the Hauraki Gulf at Manaia Harbour, 10 kilometres (6 mi) southwest of Coromandel. The Manaia catchment is nationally and internationally significant for biodiversity. Most of the rocks in the lower parts of the catchment are Cretaceous greywacke of the Manaia Hill Group, with Miocene andesite forming most of the uplands. Well-draining brown soils, formed mostly from andesite, cover most of the basin. Native bush covers 72.6% of the area, with mānuka and kānuka covering another 19%, so that water quality is good. Due to siltation of the harbour, following extensive logging in the last century, mangroves increased by 195% from 1971 to 1995. In 1890 the Kauri Timber Company built 3 dams to drive the logs downstream and between 1885 and 1901 9.2 kg (20 lb) of gold was dug from Leading Wind and Golden Hill mines. One of the kauri dams is still marked on the map. The single-lane SH25 bridge over the river opened in 1913.

Coromandel Aerodrome (IATA: CMV, ICAO: NZCX) is a small aerodrome located 2 Nautical Miles (3.7 km) south of Coromandel Township on the Coromandel Peninsula of the North Island of New Zealand.

The Siamese Kauri is a kauri tree (Agathis australis) growing in Kauri Grove, about 10 kilometres south of Coromandel township in the north-east of the North Island of New Zealand. The tree gains its name from the conjoined lower trunk that the two trees share. It grows in the Kauri Grove, one of the few remaining stands of mature kauri on the Coromandel Peninsula. It is about 500 metres off the 309 Road, and is accessed by a 30-minute walking track.

The 309 Road is a 22-kilometre (14 mi) gravel road between the towns of Coromandel and Whitianga in New Zealand. It winds its way from Coromandel, on the west side of the Coromandel Peninsula, over the ranges to Whitianga, on the eastern side. There are two theories as to how it got its name: one is that there are 309 bends in the road, the other is that horse-drawn coaches used to take 309 minutes to travel it. Places of interest along the road include Waiau Falls and the Kauri Grove, a stand of mature kauri trees.

The Waikawau River is the name of two rivers of the Coromandel Peninsula in New Zealand's North Island. The more southerly flows generally west from its sources in the Coromandel Range, reaching the Firth of Thames at Waikawau Beach, almost 6 km (3.7 mi) north of Tapu. The other flows south east off the Moehau Range to join the Pacific at Waikawau. Both rivers were officially named on 21 June 2019. The New Zealand Ministry for Culture and Heritage gives a translation of "water of the shag" for Waikawau. Fish in the river include longfin eels (tuna), torrentfish (panoko), koaro and īnanga. The area used by the boat ramp (since 2001) and car park is part of a delta formed by the river. Shingle was taken off the delta from at least 1920 to 1937. The 219 ton Devonport Steam Ferry paddle steamer Eagle (1886-1924) was on the beach at least from 1925 to 1927. Former Auckland tram bodies were moved to the south end of the delta in 1953 for use as holiday baches. Ngāati Tamaterā regained the delta and other areas under a Settlement dated 20 September 2017, following Land Court irregularities dating back to 1878. The first bridge over the river was built in 1885. A single lane concrete bridge now carries SH25 over the river.

Whanganui Island is the largest of a small group of islands at the entrance to Coromandel harbour in the Hauraki Gulf, off the coast of New Zealand's North Island. The island, which is privately owned, is 2.83 square kilometres (1.09 sq mi) in area. Much of it is farmed, but there are some forested areas.

Motutere / Castle Rock is a 525-metre-high (1,722 ft) mountain southeast of Coromandel, Waikato, on New Zealand's North Island. It was formerly popular for rock climbing, with a number of high bolted routes.

The Coromandel Peninsula (Māori: Te Tara-o-te-Ika-a-Māui) on the North Island of New Zealand extends 85 kilometres (53 mi) north from the western end of the Bay of Plenty, forming a natural barrier protecting the Hauraki Gulf and the Firth of Thames in the west from the Pacific Ocean to the east. It is 40 kilometres (25 mi) wide at its broadest point. Almost its entire population lives on the narrow coastal strips fronting the Hauraki Gulf and the Bay of Plenty. In clear weather the peninsula is clearly visible from Auckland, the country's biggest city, which lies on the far shore of the Hauraki Gulf, 55 kilometres (34 mi) to the west. The peninsula is part of the Thames-Coromandel District and the Waikato Region.

Te Mata is a small village on the western coast of the Coromandel Peninsula, New Zealand, located approximately halfway between Coromandel Town and Thames. It overlooks Te Mata River. The name 'Te Mata' also applies to a hamlet on the other side of the Waikato, 15 km from Raglan and a vineyard and a peak in Hawke's Bay.

The Te Mata River is a river of the Coromandel Peninsula in New Zealand's North Island. It flows west to reach the Firth of Thames at the small settlement of Te Mata, 25 kilometres (16 mi) south of Coromandel. The river was once used to wash large kauri logs down to the sea. The headwaters were logged for kauri around 1890–1900. Thames Sawmilling Company cut rimu and miro in the 1960s. The higher areas around Papakai weren't logged. The native frogs, Leiopelma archeyi and Leiopelma hochstetteri, live near the valley. Gentle Annie mine produced 4.8 kg of gold between 1887 and 1889. Gentle Annie Stream joins the river about 3 km up from the coast and the find was described as being towards the ridge. The SH25 bridge was built about 1945.

Tapu is a locality on the western side of the Coromandel Peninsula of New Zealand. State Highway 25 runs through it. Coromandel is 35 km to the north, and Thames is 19 km to the south. The Tapu River flows from the Coromandel Range past the settlement and into the Firth of Thames to the west. The "Tapu-Coroglen Road", a windy gravel road, connects it across the Coromandel Range with Coroglen in the east. The Square Kauri is on this road.

The Tapu River (Waipatukahu Stream prior to 1974) is a river of the Coromandel Peninsula in New Zealand's North Island. It flows west from the Coromandel Range, reaching the Firth of Thames at the settlement of Tapu, approximately halfway between Thames and Coromandel. Except for ammoniacal nitrogen, water quality in the river is good, as it mainly drains native forest; only 5.1% of the catchment is farmed. The river runs over andesite and dacite. Fish in the river include long and shortfin eels (tuna), common bully (toitoi), redfin bully, torrentfish (panoko), smelt (pōrohe), īnanga, koura, trout and shrimp. To protect Tapu from flooding, the flow capacity of the river has been maximised. The native frogs, Leiopelma archeyi and Leiopelma hochstetteri, live near the valley. The Tapu-Coroglen Road, opened in 1927, follows the river, passing the Rapaura Watergardens and the square kauri tree. Kauri was logged in the 1880s and 1950s. The SH25 bridge was built about 1937. Gold was mined in the valley from 1868 at several mines and continued until at least the 1930s.
