The MV Greenpeace (formerly (1959–1977) and since 2002 known as the Elbe) was a Greenpeace ship built in 1959 as an oceangoing tug/salvage vessel. She was purchased by Greenpeace in 1985 from the Maryland Pilotage Company, the vessel then being named MV Maryland, and transferred back to the Netherlands to be refitted with modern equipment before being recommissioned. She took over from the first Rainbow Warrior, which had been sunk in 1985 by French commandos. In 2001 she was replaced by the MV Esperanza.

Het Scheur (Dutch pronunciation: [ət ˈsxøːr]; Dutch for "The Rip") is a branch of the Rhine-Meuse delta in South Holland, Netherlands, that flows west from the confluence of the Oude Maas and Nieuwe Maas branches past the towns of Rozenburg and Maassluis. It continues as the Nieuwe Waterweg (New Waterway) to the North Sea. Originally, Het Scheur was the northern branch of the river around Rozenburg island and curved south a few kilometres past Maassluis to join the Nieuwe Maas again in the Maasmond ("Mouth of Meuse") estuary near Den Briel. When the Nieuwe Waterweg was completed in 1872, Het Scheur was dammed off and connected to the east end of the Nieuwe Waterweg to form the new channelized main mouth of the Rhine-Meuse delta.

Blankenburg is a former village that was located on the Dutch island of Rozenburg in the province of South Holland. It was located to the west of Rotterdam and to the southeast of the village of Rozenburg and was part of the Blankenburg island polder of the same name, which was created around 1600 by migrants from Blankenberge in Flanders. Soon after, it formed a single island with Rozenburg and a few embankments in the Maas estuary. The village that originated in the seventeenth century was completely abandoned in the early 1960s due to the construction of Europoort. One of the first inhabitants of the island was Willem Pietersz. Moerman (ca.1575-1648), a farmer, birdwatcher and hunter who fled from Flanders during the Eighty Years' War. He is probably the one who gave the island the name Blankenburg, after the town of Blankenberge where he came from. Within a century, the settlement grew into a village with its own church and courthouse.Until the beginning of the 20th century the village of Blankenburg was the center of the island. Here stood the church, the school and the court house. There was also a ferry connection over the Brielse Maas with Nieuwesluis on the island Voorne-Putten. After 1900 the center was increasingly located on the Maassluis side of the island, in the village that was named Rozenburg but was initially called 'De Buurt' (Dutch for the neighbourhood). Until 1965 Blankenburg was a village of approximately 400 inhabitants and 130 houses that were built along various dikes. In 1960 the municipality of Rotterdam expropriated the houses and farms for the construction of the Europoort industrial area. The Rotterdam band The Amazing Stroopwafels wrote a song about the village. The name 'Blankenburg' also lives on in the name of a still existing football club. The name of the Blankenburg Tunnel connection which is currently under construction refers to the former polder.

Rozenburg (Dutch pronunciation: [ˈroːzə(m)bʏr(ə)x] ) is a town and former municipality in the western Netherlands, in the province of South Holland. The municipality had a population of 13,173 in 2004, and covers an area of 6.50 km² (of which 1.99 km² water). It was the second-smallest municipality in the Netherlands in area (behind Bennebroek). On 10 July 2008, the local council decided to disband the municipality and to form a submunicipality of Rotterdam. This was ratified on 27 October 2008 by the Eerste Kamer (the Dutch Senate), and came into effect on 18 March 2010. The town is located on the former island by the same name: Rozenburg Island. Its current form was created out of three separate parts: Rozenburg proper (a former sand bar between Het Scheur and Brielse Maas – part of the Nieuwe Maas river – both being branches of the Rhine–Meuse–Scheldt delta), the sand bar Welplaat, and the southernmost part of the Hook of Holland (which was cut off from mainland Holland by the construction of the Nieuwe Waterweg ship canal in 1870 and subsequently was connected to Rozenburg when the remainder of Het Scheur was dammed off). The island is now connected to Voorne-Putten by a sea barrier and a dam.

Maassluis West is a metro station in Maassluis, Netherlands. Originally opened as a railway station, it is now part of Rotterdam Metro Line B.

Maasland (population: 6,844) is a town in the western Netherlands, in the province of South Holland. It lies in the municipality (gemeente) of Midden-Delfland and covers an area of 24.42 km2 (of which 0.64 km2 water).

Maassluis (Dutch pronunciation: [maːˈslœys] (listen)) is a city in the western Netherlands, in the province of South Holland. The municipality had a population of 32,768 in 2019 and covers 10.12 km2 (3.91 sq mi) of which 1.64 km2 (0.63 sq mi) water. It received city rights in 1811.

Rozenburg wind wall in Rozenburg, Netherlands, is a wall built to block wind from entering the Calandkanaal, and ease the passage of large cargo ships through the narrow canal, particularly through the Calandbrug bridge. The wall blocks about 75% of the wind and allows the ships to pass smoothly. The wall is 1600 meters long and it is made up of 125 rectangular and cylindrical slabs, each about 25 meters tall and 18 meters wide.

Zwartewaal is a village in the Dutch province of South Holland, The Netherlands. It is a part of the municipality of Voorne aan Zee and lies about 5 km south of Maassluis.

Oostbuurt is a hamlet in the Dutch province of South Holland. It is a part of the municipality of Westland, and lies about 6 km north of Maassluis. The statistical area "Oostbuurt", which also can include the surrounding countryside, has a population of around 150.

The Botlek originally was the name of a stretch of the Nieuwe Maas river, part of the Rhine–Meuse delta near the Dutch cities of Vlaardingen and Spijkenisse in the province of South Holland. Specifically, it was the name of the strait that separated the island of Rozenburg from the sand bar of Welplaat. The strait itself was merely the continuation of the Nieuwe Maas, and the stretch of the river south of Rozenburg continued to be called Nieuwe Maas until the confluence with Het Scheur formed the Brielse Maas estuary (now the Brielse Meer). Major waterway regulation works were carried out in the Netherlands in the 19th and 20th centuries to improve water management and stop the delta from silting up; the Botlek was dammed off at its southern end (connecting Rozenburg and Welplaat) and remodelled into one of the largest of the Rotterdam seaports (see also Europoort).

Maasdijk is a village in the Dutch province of South Holland. It is a part of the municipality of Westland, and lies about 5 km northwest of Maassluis. In 2008, the village of Maasdijk has 7000 inhabitants. The built-up area of the village is 1.5 km², and contains 4000 of the 7000 residences. The statistical area "Maasdijk", which also can include the peripheral parts of the village, as well as the surrounding countryside, has a population of around 4060.
