Fredrikstad Station

Fredrikstad (Norwegian: [ˈfrɛ̀drɪkstɑ] ; previously Frederiksstad; literally "Fredrik's Town") is a city and municipality in Østfold county, Norway. The administrative centre of the municipality is the city of Fredrikstad. The city of Fredrikstad was founded in 1567 by King Frederick II, and established as a municipality on 1 January 1838 (see formannskapsdistrikt). The rural municipality of Glemmen was merged with Fredrikstad on 1 January 1964. The rural municipalities of Borge, Onsøy, Kråkerøy, and Rolvsøy were merged with Fredrikstad on 1 January 1994. The city straddles the river Glomma where it meets the Skagerrak, about 20 kilometres (12 mi) from the Sweden border. Along with neighboring Sarpsborg, Fredrikstad forms the fifth largest city in Norway: Fredrikstad/Sarpsborg. As of 30 September 2021, according to Statistics Norway, these two municipalities have a total population of 141,708 with 83,761 in Fredrikstad and 57,947 in Sarpsborg. Fredrikstad was built at the mouth of Glomma as a replacement after Sarpsborg (15 kilometres (9 miles) upstream) was burnt down by the Swedish Army in the 1500s. Some of the citizens stayed behind and rebuilt their old town at its original site and got their city status back in 1839. The city centre is on the west bank of the Glomma, while the old town on the east bank is Northern Europe's best preserved fortified town. Fredrikstad used to have a large sawmill industry and was an important harbour for timber export, then later on shipbuilding, until the main yard was closed in 1988. The main industries are currently various chemical plants and other light industry. In 2005, Fredrikstad was the final host port for the Tall Ships' Race, attracting thousands to the city. In 2019, it was the first host port. In 2017, Fredrikstad won the national award for most attractive city. The award is given yearly by the Norwegian government on the basis of social, economic and environmental factors.

Fredrikstad fortress (Fredrikstad festning) was a fortification in Fredrikstad, Norway. It was the base of the Østfold Regiment, with defence related responsibilities for the east side of Oslofjord.

Fredrikstad Cathedral (Norwegian: Fredrikstad Domkirke) is a cathedral located in the west of the city of Fredrikstad in Østfold county, Norway. It is the episcopal seat of the Diocese of Borg of the Church of Norway. The church was elevated to cathedral status in 1969 with the creation of the new Diocese of Borg. The cathedral has space for 1100 people.

Glemmen is a parish and former municipality with the city of Fredrikstad, Østfold county, Norway.

Vaterland is a neighborhood in Oslo, Norway. It is located north of the tracks at Oslo Central Station, between Jernbanetorget, Storgata and Akerselva river. The area features Oslo Central Station and Oslo Bus Terminal, the shopping centers Oslo City and Byporten, Galleri Oslo, Radisson Blu Plaza Hotel, the concert arena Oslo Spektrum and Postgirobygget. Vaterland Park lies along the Aker River. The name Vaterland was borrowed from Dutch Waterland 'wetland, waterland'.

The Fredrikstad Bridge is an arch bridge in the city of Fredrikstad in Østfold county, Norway. It crosses the river Glomma, and connects the western and eastern parts of the city. The bridge is 824 metres long, with a main span of 196 metres. The sailing height is 39,5 metres. The bridge was opened August 18, 1957, by the then crown prince Olav. It is a slightly larger copy of the 2 year older Karmsund bridge. The bridge is protected as a national heritage.

Stjernehallen is an indoor ice hockey arena located in Fredrikstad, Norway. The capacity of the arena is 2,473 and was opened in 1970. It is the home arena of Stjernen ice hockey team.

Kråkerøy is an island and a former municipality in Østfold, Norway. The island of Kråkerøy was separated from Glemmen as a municipality of its own January 1, 1908. At that time Kråkerøy had a population of 3,311. The rural municipality was (together with Borge, Onsøy and Rolvsøy) merged with the city of Fredrikstad January 1, 1994. Prior to the merger Kråkerøy had a population of 7,445. In 1948 Kråkerøy was the site of the Kråkerøy speech by then Prime Minister Einar Gerhardsen, which became an important part of Norwegian political history.

The Glomma, or Glåma, is Norway's longest and most voluminous river. With a total length of 621 kilometres (386 miles), it has a drainage basin that covers fully 13% of Norway's surface area, all in the southern part of the country.

The Fredrikstad Stadion is a football stadium in Fredrikstad, Norway and home of the Norwegian First Division team Fredrikstad FK. It is located in an area which formerly used to be a large shipyard (locally known as Værste or FMV), but which nowadays is the technological centre of the city, with several companies and a college. The frontage of the stadium is built to replicate the original halls of the workshop. This makes it architecturally unique. The stadium was built to replace Old Fredrikstad Stadion, which was considered to be one of the eldest and most worn-out stadium in the country. The total capacity is approximately 12,560, all seated. There is a possibility to expand it furthermore, to some 15,000 seats. The venue has hosted Norway national under-21 football team matches five times, playing 0–1 against Netherlands on 7 September 2007, 2–1 against Switzerland on 12 September 2007, 0–0 against Macedonia on 9 September 2008, 1–3 against Croatia on 5 September 2009 and 0–1 against Serbia on 9 September 2009. In a 2012 survey carried out by the Norwegian Players' Association among away-team captains, Fredrikstad Stadion was ranked as the sixth, with a score of 4.20 on a scale from one to five.

Fredrikstad Stadion was the homeground of the Norwegian top division football club Fredrikstad FK until the end of the 2006 season, due to their new and modernized stadium at the borough of Kråkerøy, only a few minutes away from the city center. The stadium opened in 1914 named Fredrikstad Idræts- og Fotbaldplads. The venue has hosted the Norwegian Athletics Championships in 1915 and 1921. The venue has hosted Norway national under-21 football team matches times, playing 1–0 against Iceland on 30 May 1978, 2–3 against Wales on 20 September 1983 and 1–0 against Netherlands on 22 September 1992. The total capacity of the stadium was approximately 10,500. The spectator's record is approximately 15,000. The old stadium had a long history since it was built in the 1920s. It hosted the Norwegian Cup final in 1925, a game Brann won 3–0 against Sarpsborg. But it was nonetheless highly worn out and out of date at the end. The stadium no longer exists, it was condemned to make place for flats and offices in the winter 2011/2012.

Frederik II Videregående skole is the name of an upper secondary school located in the Norwegian city of Fredrikstad. The school is named after the Danish-Norwegian king Frederik II(1534-1588). The school is, with more than 1,200 students, one of the largest schools of its kind in Norway.
