The killing of Jared Bridegan occurred on February 16, 2022, in Jacksonville Beach, Florida. Jared Bridegan, a 33-year-old Microsoft senior design manager, was shot and killed after he dropped off his older twins at his ex-wife's house. In January 2023, Henry Tenon, was arrested for Bridegan's murder. In March 2023, a second suspect, Mario Fernandez Saldana, was arrested in Orange County, Florida. The grand jury indicted the suspect with charges of first-degree murder, conspiracy to commit murder, solicitation to commit a capital felony, and child abuse. In August 2023, a third suspect, Shanna Gardner, ex-wife of the victim and wife of the second suspect, was arrested and indicted on the same charges. Tenon accepted a plea deal, and was sentenced to 15 years in prison. The other two suspects pleaded not guilty. Prosecutors are seeking the capital penalty against the suspects. The trial is expected to take place in late 2025.

Alex Čejka led by five strokes after the third round, but went out in 42 and finished in a tie for ninth. Stenson was the third European to win the title, after Sergio García the previous year and Sandy Lyle in 1987. Due to 83 players making the halfway cut (top 70 and ties), a second cut was initiated after the third round. Defending champion Sergio García finished ten strokes back, in a tie for 22nd place.

The tournament was won by Webb Simpson, four strokes ahead of three runners-up.Defending champion Kim Si-woo opened with a five-under 67, but finished 15 strokes back, tied for 63rd place. This was the twelfth consecutive Players Championship held in May; it returned to March in 2019.

Len Mattiace surged into the lead in the final round, but a quintuple-bogey at 17 ended his chances; he birdied the last hole and finished four strokes back. Third round leader and 1995 champion Lee Janzen shot 79 and fell to eighteenth. He regrouped and won his second U.S. Open at Olympic in June. Defending champion Steve Elkington withdrew on Monday night, citing complications after sinus surgery. the first not to compete since Jerry Pate in 1983 (neck).

Martin Kaymer opened with a 63, led after each round, and won his first Players, one stroke ahead of runner-up Jim Furyk. It was the first to feature an eight-figure purse, with a winner's share of $1.8 million. With defending champion and world number one Tiger Woods out of competition due to back surgery in late March, four entered this Players Championship with an opportunity to ascend to the top of the world rankings. World number two Adam Scott needed a 16th-place finish, third-ranked Henrik Stenson a top-six finish, number four Bubba Watson a solo runner-up, and fifth-ranked Matt Kuchar a win. They finished at T38, T34, T48, and T17, respectively, and Woods remained number one.Due to 82 players making the halfway cut (top 70 and ties), a second cut was initiated after the third round. This was the first year for the new playoff format, a three-hole aggregate beginning on the 16th hole, which was not necessary. After a 90-minute rain delay late in the final round, Kaymer finished with a par in near-darkness. If he had bogeyed the final hole, the playoff would have begun on Monday morning. Kaymer was the fourth European to win the Players, following Sandy Lyle, Sergio García, and Henrik Stenson. It was the fortieth edition held at the Stadium Course; the 2020 tournament was canceled after the first round in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Justin Thomas shot a four-under 68 in the final round for 274 (−14) to win his first Players, one stroke ahead of runner-up Lee Westwood, the 54-hole leader. Defending champion Rory McIlroy (2019) missed the 36-hole cut.
