Kulpenberg TV tower

The Kulpenberg is a 477-metre-high (1,565 ft) high mountain in the Kyffhäuser mountains, Thuringia, Germany. On it is the Kulpenberg TV tower, a telecommunication tower.

The Kyffhäuser (German pronunciation: [ˈkɪfˌhɔʏzɐ] , sometimes also referred to as Kyffhäusergebirge) is a hill range in Central Germany, shared by Thuringia and Saxony-Anhalt, southeast of the Harz mountains. It reaches its highest point at the Kulpenberg with an elevation of 473.4 m (1,553 ft). The range is the site of medieval Kyffhausen Castle (Reichsburg Kyffhausen) and the 19th century Kyffhäuser Monument; it has significance in German traditional mythology as the legendary resting place of Emperor Frederick Barbarossa.

The Imperial Castle of Kyffhausen (German: Reichsburg Kyffhausen) is a medieval castle ruin, situated in the Kyffhäuser hills in the German state of Thuringia, close to its border with Saxony-Anhalt. Probably founded about 1000, it superseded the nearby imperial palace (Kaiserpfalz) of Tilleda under the rule of the Hohenstaufen emperors during the 12th and 13th centuries. Together with the Kyffhäuser Monument, erected on the castle grounds between 1890 and 1896, it is today a popular tourist destination. The castle is variously known in English as Kyffhausen Castle, Kyffhauser Castle, Kyffhäuser Castle, and Kyffhaueser Castle.

The Kyffhäuser Monument (German: Kyffhäuserdenkmal), also known as Barbarossa Monument (Barbarossadenkmal), is an Emperor William monument in the Kyffhäuser mountain range in the German state of Thuringia. It was erected from 1890 to 1896 atop the ruins of the medieval Kyffhausen Castle near Bad Frankenhausen. Designed by architect Bruno Schmitz (1858–1916), it is the third-largest monument in Germany. Schmitz has also designed the two largest memorials, the Monument to the Battle of the Nations, that commemorates the 1813 Battle of Leipzig and the Emperor William Monument at the Porta Westfalica.

The Goldene Aue (German pronunciation: [ˈɡɔldənə ˈʔaʊə], "golden lowland", also " ... bottom" or " ... meadow" / " ... pasture", with "Au[e]" referring to a low-lying area, often a wetland) is a valley in eastern Germany, in the states Thuringia and Saxony-Anhalt. It is situated between the towns Nordhausen in the west, and Sangerhausen in the east. It is bordered by the mountain ranges Harz in the north, and Windleite and Kyffhäuser in the south. The river Helme flows through the Goldene Aue.

Kelbra (German: [ˈkɛlbʁa] ) is a town the Mansfeld-Südharz district, in Saxony-Anhalt, Germany. It is situated north of the Kyffhäuser mountains, approx. 20 km west of Sangerhausen, and 20 km east of Nordhausen. Kelbra is part of the Verbandsgemeinde Goldene Aue. Kelbra lies on the northern slopes of the Kyffhäuser mountains in the Goldene Aue. The B 85 federal road starts in the neighbouring village of Berga and runs through Kelbra over the Kyffhäuser to Passau. Due to the proximity of the Kelbra Dam and the Kyffhäuser, the town is a type of tourist centre, but suffers from heavy day traffic, especially motorcycles, because the road climbing up to the Kyffhäuser starts here. Nearby are the Barbarossa Cave and the Peasants' War Panorama in Bad Frankenhausen. The villages of Sittendorf, Tilleda (Kyffhäuser) and Thürungen belong to the municipality of Kelbra. Berga-Kelbra station, which is on the Halle–Hann. Münden railway is located nearby in Berga.

Goldene Aue (German pronunciation: [ˈɡɔldənə ˈʔaʊə]) is a Verbandsgemeinde ("collective municipality") in the Mansfeld-Südharz district, in Saxony-Anhalt, Germany. Before 1 January 2010, it was a Verwaltungsgemeinschaft. It is situated south and west of Sangerhausen. It is named after the Goldene Aue valley. The seat of the Verbandsgemeinde is in Kelbra. The Verbandsgemeinde Goldene Aue consists of the following municipalities: Berga Brücken-Hackpfüffel Edersleben Kelbra Wallhausen

The Battle of Frankenhausen was fought on 14 and 15 May 1525. It was an important battle in the German Peasants' War and the final act of the war in Thuringia: joint troops of Landgrave Philip I of Hesse and Duke George of Saxony defeated the peasants under their spiritual leader Thomas Müntzer near Frankenhausen in the County of Schwarzburg.

The Peasants' War Panorama (German: Bauernkriegspanorama) is a public monument in Bad Frankenhausen, Thuringia, Germany. It houses the monumental painting Early Bourgeois Revolution in Germany (German: Frühbürgerliche Revolution in Deutschland) by East German painter Werner Tübke, executed from 1976 to 1987. The paining spans 14 metres (46 ft) by 123 metres (404 ft). The project was commissioned by the East German government to commemorate the Battle of Frankenhausen, fought on 15 May 1525 during the German Peasants' War.

The Barbarossa Cave (German: Barbarossahöhle) is an anhydrite cave (gypsum cave) in the Kyffhäuser Hills near Rottleben in the east German state of Thuringia. It is a cave with large caverns, grottos and lakes. The anhydrite has formed gypsum on the surface due to the air moisture in the cave and, as a result, has increased in volume. The resulting layers of gypsum gradually separate from the underlying rock and hang like wallpaper from the walls and ceilings of the caverns. The cave was discovered in 1865 as a gallery was being driven during prospecting work for kupferschiefer, a copper-bearing shale or bituminous marl. By 1866, it had been developed and opened as a show cave under the name of Falkenburg Cave (Falkenburger Höhle). It has a floor area of about 25,000 m2 (269,100 sq ft). Of interest to visitors are the underground lakes whose gypsum content gives them an iridescent green colour, and a human made stone construction, known as Barbarossa's Table and Chair (Tisch und Stuhl von Barbarossa). Its location in the Kyffhäuser Hills gave rise to its link with the Barbarossa Legend and its proximity to the Kyffhäuser Monument led to it being renamed the Barbarossa Cave (Barbarossahöhle) at the end of the 19th century. According to the legend, Frederick Barbarossa would sleep in an underground palace until Germany is unified. His beard is growing around a round table. To date, it has gone around the table twice, but when it has encircled the table a third time, the end of the world will begin or Barbarossa will awaken and begin his reign anew. According to the legend, until then, there will be no other good emperors. The Barbarossa Cave lies on the Karst Trail.

Bennungen is a village and a former municipality in the Mansfeld-Südharz district, Saxony-Anhalt, Germany. Since 1 January 2010, it is part of the municipality Südharz.
