Montgomerieston was named for the Montgomerie family, Earls of Eglinton.

As of November 2020, 572 pupils attended Ayr Academy which is the smallest pupil intake numbers in the whole of South Ayrshire.

St Margaret's was designated a cathedral in 2007, and is the most recent church to be given status as a Roman Catholic cathedral in the United Kingdom, due to the closure of Good Shepherd Cathedral, Ayr.
