Knowlton railway station

Knowlton was an eccesiastical and civil parish; the former was abolished in 1940 [1], the latter on 1 April 1935 [2], and the village is now part of Goodnestone civil parish, in the Dover district, in Kent, England. It is located about 10 miles (16 km) north of Dover. Knowlton Hall, set in 200 acres (81 ha) of parkland, is located here. In 1931 the civil parish had a population of 18.The Church of St Clement is now redundant and in the care of the Churches Conservation Trust, and is open daily. Knowlton is a thankful village, in that it did not lose anyone in World War I. It was once served (1916-1948), by a halt on the East Kent Light Railway, one of Colonel Stephen's lines, which ran between Sheperdswell & Wingham.

Admiral Sir John Narborough (or Narbrough, c. 1640–1688) was an English naval commander. He served with distinction in the Anglo-Dutch Wars and against the pirates of the Barbary Coast. He is also known for leading a poorly understood expedition to Valdivia and Patagonia in 1670–1671. In the 1680s he was involved in the scavenging of wrecked Spanish treasure ships.

St Clement's Church is a redundant Anglican church in the village of Knowlton, Kent, England. It is recorded in the National Heritage List for England as a designated Grade I listed building, and is under the care of the Churches Conservation Trust. The church stands in the grounds of Knowlton Court.

Knowlton Court is a Grade I listed manor house near Goodnestone, Kent, England that dates back to the Elizabethan period. The present front façade in the Queen Anne style, was added in 1715.

Tilmanstone Colliery Halt was a station on the East Kent Light Railway. It opened on 16 October 1916 and was renamed Elvington in 1925. It closed to passenger traffic after the last train on 30 October 1948. The station served the pit village of Elvington. Part of the platform is still in situ hidden in undergrowth.

Tilmanstone is a small village and civil parish in Kent, in the South East of England, near Eastry, a much bigger and more developed area. Tilmanstone no longer has a village school; however, the independent Northbourne Park School is close to the parish boundary. The name of Tilmanstone has historically been famous for its colliery, although it is located in the village of Eythorne, operated from 1906 to 1986 as one of the four main pits of the Kent coalfield. The population taken at the 2011 Census also included that of the nearby hamlet of Ashley.

Elvington is a small pit village on a ridge in between Canterbury and Dover in the county of Kent in Southeast England. Located near Eythorne , Elvington was mostly built in the early 20th century to serve the nearby coal mine at Tilmanstone, as were other Kent Coalfield villages including Snowdown, Aylesham and Betteshanger.

The Kent Coalfield is a coalfield in the eastern part of the English county of Kent. The Coalfields Trust defines the Kent Coalfield as the wards of Barham Downs and Marshside in the Canterbury district, and the wards of Aylesham, Eastry, Eythorne & Shepherdswell, Middle Deal & Sholden, Mill Hill and North Deal in the Dover district.Coal was discovered in the area in 1890 while borings for an early Channel Tunnel project were taking place; the resultant Shakespeare colliery lasted until 1915. In 1911, investigation into whether there was other workable coal was planned. Six 'bore holes' were put down in search of coal (at Rushbourne, Hoads Wood in Sturry, Herne Bay, Reculver, Chitty (which is near Chislet) and Chislet Park near the future site of Hersden). In the early years many collieries were sunk but were short-lived and the East Kent Light Railway was built to exploit the anticipated business. Extensive plans had been drawn up by 1914 for major coal exploitation in east Kent, and the coalfield expanded rapidly in the late 1920s and early 1930s, with its maximum output reached in 1936. The outbreak of war and disappointing test results resulted in four collieries surviving: Betteshanger, Chislet, Snowdown and Tilmanstone. Had coal been more easily accessible, the open, rural landscape of east Kent could have changed beyond recognition.

Eastry South railway station was a railway station on the East Kent Light Railway. It opened on 13 April 1925 and closed to passenger traffic after the last train on 30 October 1948. The station served the village of Eastry. There was a siding to the south of the station. The track was removed in May 1954.

Eythorne Baptist Church originated in the meetings of early 16th century Baptists who had crossed the English Channel from the low countries to Kent to escape persecution. Nineteenth-century Baptist writer J. J. Goadby named Eythorne as one of the three "most ancient Baptist churches in England".For many years the Church had associated village chapels in east Kent. Two of these remain—at Adisham and Nonington. Others were at Eastry, Ashley, Woolage Green, Wootton and Barnsole.

Chillenden is a village and former civil parish, now in the parish of Goodnestone, in the Dover district, in east Kent, England. It is between Canterbury and Deal. In 1931 the parish had a population of 130. On 1 April 1935 the parish was abolished and merged with Goodnestone.In the Domesday Book of 1086, Chillenden was recorded as 'Cilledene'. The parish in 1800 was made up of 160 acres (65 ha), containing three farms: one belonging to a Mr. Hammond, the other two to Sir Brook Bridges. A pedlary fair was held here on Whit Monday.The church, is dedicated to All Saints, in the priory of Ledes after being given to it by William of Norwich. The incumbency included three acres of glebe.Chillenden was home to the families of Thomas Chillenden and William Chillenden, as indicated by their surnames. A double murder occurred in Chillenden in 1996. Michael Stone was convicted of killing Lin Russell and her daughter Megan. Stone received a life sentence with parole available after 25 years.

Eythorne railway station is a station on the East Kent Railway. Originally a station on the East Kent Light Railway, It opened on 16 October 1916 but closed to passenger traffic after the last train on 30 October 1948. It served as the junction for the branch to Guilford Colliery, which was abandoned in 1921. The track on this branch was lifted in 1931 but relaid during World War II to accommodate a 9.2 inches (230 mm) rail mounted gun. The station served the village of Eythorne, it reopened as part of the East Kent Railway in 1993.
