Kirklees

The Heavy Woollen District is a region of textile-focused industrial development in West Yorkshire, England. It acquired the name because of the heavyweight cloth manufactured there from the early 19th century.The district is made up of parts of the modern day boroughs of Kirklees, Leeds and Wakefield in West Yorkshire, England. Located around the towns of Dewsbury, Batley, Heckmondwike and Ossett, the area extends to the towns and villages of Liversedge, Gomersal, Gildersome, Birkenshaw, Mirfield, Cleckheaton, Morley, Tingley, East Ardsley, Birstall and Horbury. The manufacture of wool cloth for clothing, blankets, rope and twine continues in the district. The area was one of the key textile centres in Yorkshire, famed for its production of "shoddy and mungo". For years companies had tried to blend different fibres without success leading to the term, "munt go", i.e. "mustn't go" as a Yorkshire colloquialism. Machinery invented in Batley to grind soft rags (shoddy) is thought to have first been devised in 1813, and for hard rags (mungo) later on. Most mills have either closed or put to other uses, but some shoddy/mungo mills remain such as Edward Clay & Son Ltd. in Ossett.

Holme Valley is a large civil parish in the Metropolitan Borough of Kirklees in West Yorkshire, England. It has a population of 25,049 (2001 census), increasing to 34,680 for the two wards in the 2011 Census. Its administrative centre is in Holmfirth. Other sizeable settlements in the parish include, Brockholes, Honley and New Mill. It is named from the River Holme that runs through the parish. . The parish is the successor to the Holmfirth urban district. An urban district covering Holmfirth was created in 1894 by the Local Government Act 1894 and then in 1938, under a County Review Order, absorbed parts of the Holme, Honley, New Mill, South Crosland and Thurstonland and Farnley Tyas urban districts, keeping the name. Under the Local Government Act 1972, the Holmfirth urban district was abolished on 1 April 1974, but its area was retained as a single civil parish with a parish council. The council changed its name from Holmfirth Parish Council to its present Holme Valley Parish Council in 1975. .

Netherthong is a village in the civil parish of Holme Valley, and the metropolitan borough of Kirklees in West Yorkshire, England. The village is near the town of Holmfirth, and on the B6107 road to Meltham from the main A6024 Woodhead Road through the Holme Valley from Honley to Holmfirth. It has an estimated population of 1,738 (2018).

Honley is a large village in West Yorkshire, England. Historically part of the West Riding of Yorkshire, it is situated near to Holmfirth and Huddersfield, and on the banks of the River Holme in the Holme Valley. According to the 2011 Census it had a population of 6,474, a growth of 577 from the 2001 Census

South Crosland is a village in the metropolitan borough of Kirklees in West Yorkshire, England. It was originally a chapelry in the civil parish of Almondbury, and became a separate civil parish in 1866. It became an urban district in 1894 under the Local Government Act 1894. The parish and urban district was abolished under a County Review Order in 1938, being split between the county borough of Huddersfield, the Holmfirth Urban District, and the Meltham urban district.

Honley High School is a coeducational secondary school situated on the edge of the village of Honley in the Holme Valley, West Yorkshire, England. The catchment area includes the neighbouring villages of Brockholes, Honley, Meltham and Netherton (those living in Holmfirth can also attend) Honley High has around 1,250 pupils aged 11–16. The school houses the specialist autism provision for young people with ASD from the South Kirklees area.

Upperthong is a village approximately 807 feet (246 m) above sea level, near the town of Holmfirth in Holme Valley, approximately 7 miles (11 km) south of Huddersfield, West Yorkshire, England.

Holme Valley War Memorial is a war memorial in the grounds of the Holme Valley Memorial Hospital Holmfirth, West Yorkshire, in England. It was unveiled in July 1921, by Colonel H. R. Headlam (Rtd), who had previously commanded the 5th Battalion, Duke of Wellington’s West Riding Regiment.The memorial consists of a simple cross with the names of fallen soldiers inscribed on it.

Outwood Academy Freeston (known locally as Freeston), formerly The Freeston Academy, is a state run, coeducational high school situated in Normanton, West Yorkshire near the city of Wakefield. It is a Business and Enterprise specialist school. The school is operated by Outwood Grange Academies Trust, and the current principal is Lisa Allott.

Netherton is a village, near Huddersfield, in the Kirklees metropolitan borough of West Yorkshire, England. It is 2 miles (3 km) south-west of the town centre on the road to Meltham. Netherton together with South Crosland have a population of 3,702 according to the 2001 census. It is part of the Crosland Moor and Netherton ward of the Colne Valley parliamentary constituency. It has a junior school and an infant school. It also has a junior football club who play at South Crosland Junior school and Hawkroyd bank. They were also the founder members of the Huddersfield & District Junior football league. It also has a 3 Team open age football team in the Huddersfield District League.

Netherton railway station served the village of Netherton, Kirklees, England, from 1869 to 1949 on the Meltham branch line.

Honley railway station serves the village of Honley in the Holme Valley of West Yorkshire, England. Honley station lies approximately 3 miles (4.8 km) from Huddersfield on the Penistone Line operated by Northern Trains. The station was opened by the Huddersfield & Sheffield Junction Railway (a constituent company of the Lancashire & Yorkshire Railway) in 1850. The railway line through Honley has been single since 1989, with only one platform (the former northbound one) in use for both directions
