Its seat is the town of Środa Śląska, which lies approximately 32 kilometres (20 mi) west of the regional capital Wrocław. It is part of the Wrocław metropolitan area. The gmina covers an area of 214.93 square kilometres (83.0 sq mi), and as of 2006 its total population is 19,076 (out of which the population of Środa Śląska amounts to 8,800, and the population of the rural part of the gmina is 10,276).

It came into being on January 1, 1999, as a result of the Polish local government reforms passed in 1998. The county covers an area of 703.7 square kilometres (271.7 sq mi). Its administrative seat and only town is Środa Śląska. As at 2019 the total population of the county is 54,646, out of which the population of Środa Śląska accounts for 9,516, while the rural population is 45,130.

The town lies approximately 32 kilometres (20 mi) west of the regional capital Wrocław, on the Średzka Woda creek. As of 2019, the town has a population of 9,516. It is part of the Wrocław metropolitan area.
