Its seat is the town of Polkowice, which lies approximately 80 kilometres (50 mi) north-west of the regional capital Wrocław. The gmina covers an area of 158.77 square kilometres (61.3 sq mi), and as of 2019 its total population is 27,676.

Formerly a village, it was incorporated within the town limits of Polkowice in 2005. It lies in the eastern part of Polkowice, 79 kilometres (49 mi) north-west of the regional capital Wrocław. During World War II, a German forced labour subcamp of the prison in Jawor was operated in the settlement.

The Rudna mine is a large underground mine in the west of Poland in Polkowice, Polkowice County, 350 kilometres (217 miles) south-west of the capital, Warsaw. Rudna represents one of the largest copper and silver reserve in Poland having estimated reserves of 513 million tonnes of ore grading 1.78% copper and 42 g/tonnes silver. The annual ore production is around 13 million tonnes from which 231,000 tonnes of copper and 546 tonnes of silver are extracted.
