Snead Island

The Portavant Mound (also known as the Portavant Mound Site or Snead Island Temple Mound or Portavant Indian Mound) is an archaeological site on Snead Island within the Emerson Point Preserve, just west of Palmetto, Florida. On December 23, 1994, it was added to the U.S. National Register of Historic Places. The Portavant Mound (or Snead Island Temple Mound) is one of fifteen or more "temple mounds" produced by the Safety Harbor culture (900–1725) found in the vicinity of Tampa Bay. The mound is four meters high, measures 45 m by 75 m at the base, and has a flat top that is 24 m by 46 m. Unlike other "temple mounds" around the Tampa Bay area, the Portavant Mound does not have a ramp to the top of the mound. There is a lower (one m high) platform, about 30 m by 30 m, that abuts the main mound. The Portavant Mound was made from soil mixed with debris from middens. Several other mounds, also consisting of soil mixed with midden debris, are near the "temple mound".The Portavant Mound site has been the target of a stabilization project to protect the mounds from damage from river erosion, looting, foot traffic, and exotic vegetation.

The 10-acre (0.040 km2) site was the first Native American location in Florida to be designated as a State Archaeological Site.

The Palmetto Historic District is a nationally recognized historic district, bounded by Twenty-first Avenue, Seventh Street, Fifth Avenue, and the Manatee River in Palmetto, Florida. It contains 208 historic buildings and was added to the National Register of Historic Places on November 6, 1986. The district includes Palmetto Historical Park and the various historical buildings and museums it contains.

The De Soto Heritage Festival (also previously known as the De Soto Celebration or De Soto Pageant) is an annual series of events that takes place in Bradenton, Florida, the location of Hernando de Soto's landing in Florida in May 1539. Organized by the Hernando de Soto Historical Society, the event has been held for over 80 years. Festival events include the Children's Parade and Party in the Park, SeaFood Fest, Bottle Boat Regatta, Musical & Fashion Show, De Soto Ball and Grand Parade.No festival was held from 1942 to 1945 nor 2020.

It is open Tuesday–Friday 10:00–12:00 and 1:00–4:00 as well as the first and third Saturdays of the month. Agriculture has always been part of Manatee County’s history as well as a stable force and a major contributor to the county's economy. At the Manatee County Agricultural Museum, exhibits focus on the county's primary commodities including Livestock, Vegetables, Citrus, Horticulture, and Commercial Fishing. The museum features displays of tools, equipment, photographs and exhibits that reflect the area's rich heritage. The Manatee County Agricultural Museum is a joint project of the Manatee County Agricultural Museum Board, Manatee County Clerk of Circuit Court, the Manatee County Board of County Commission, and the City of Palmetto. The museum is located within the Palmetto Historical Park.
