Linwood, Massachusetts

The Butler Block is an historic mixed use residential and commercial building located at 166 Linwood Street, in Uxbridge, Massachusetts. This 2+1⁄2 brick and wood building was built c. 1845–55. Most of the building's walls are made of brick laid in common bond, but the upper level of the north facade is framed in wood. The property also includes a 19th-century barn. The building has relatively simple Greek Revival styling, including corners trimmed with pilasters.On October 7, 1983, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places, where it is listed at 210 Linwood.

The Linwood Historic District is an industrial historic district in the Linwood village of Northbridge, Massachusetts. It is the site of the Linwood Cotton Mill and is roughly bounded by Linwood Avenue, Maple Court, and Pine Court. On June 16, 1989, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places.The Linwood Mill was built in 1866 by members of the Whitin family, who had purchased land in the area in the late 1840s. The Whitins had a history in the textile industry dating as far back as 1809, and are for whom the Northbridge village of Whitinsville is named. At the time of Linwood's development they owned virtually all of the textile industry in Northbridge. The Linwood property was built to process cotton, and produced cambrics, sateens, and shirting fabric. The original mill was a 3+1⁄2-story brick structure, which was expanded c. 1870 with the addition of a steam power plant in order to increase production. From the 1870s, the only other surviving building is a brick storehouse.The mill complex, in addition to industrial facilities, also included worker housing. The district includes the fine Second Empire proprietor's residence, carriage house, and greenhouse, as well as a selection of tenement houses, dormitories, and duplexes built by the Whitins to house the factory workers. The mill complex is the best preserved of those built by the Whitins; the others have either been altered significantly, or been damaged or destroyed by fire.

The North Uxbridge School, also known as the Virginia A. Blanchard School, is an historic school building at 87 East Hartford Avenue in Uxbridge, Massachusetts. Built in 1873 and enlarged in 1900, it served as a public school until 2002. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1983 for its architectural and community significance. It is slated in 2015 to be converted into affordable housing.

The E. Brown House is an historic house located at 7 Sutton Street, in Uxbridge, Massachusetts. It is a 2+1⁄2-story wood-frame structure, five bays wide, with a side-gable roof, central chimney, and clapboard siding. Despite its otherwise vernacular construction, it has fine quality Federal styling, with corner pilasters and cornice. The cornice and the door surround appear to be carved based on published drawings of Asher Benjamin. The western wing is a 20th-century addition.On October 7, 1983, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places.

The Rivulet Mill Complex is an historic group of mill buildings located at 60 Rivulet Street, in Uxbridge, Massachusetts, United States. It was originally built by Chandler Taft. Richard Sayles purchased the mill in 1864 and, after repairs, began the manufacture of shoddy, a yarn made from woolen scraps and used clothing. (Richard Sayles was a graduate of the Uxbridge Academy and his family was prominent in Pawtucket, Rhode Island.) In 1872 the original mill burned and was totally destroyed. Sayles and Zadok Taft rebuilt on site and continued the business under (later) the name of Sayles, Taft & Co. Later still, after Taft retired, the name became the Richard Sayles Mill. The mill was sold out of the Sayles family in 1910. It was operated by the Uxbridge Worsted Company until the mid-1950s.In October 1983 the complex was added to the National Register of Historic Places.

It is classified as a community or populated place (Class Code U6) located at latitude 42.088 and longitude -71.641 and the elevation is 266 feet (81 m). North Uxbridge appears on the Uxbridge U.S. Geological Survey Map. Worcester County is in the Eastern time zone (GMT -5) and observes DST. North Uxbridge is located about 36 miles WSW of Boston, and 15 miles SE of Worcester. The town meeting in 1885 set aside North Uxbridge as a "special district", since its population had exceeded 1000 people. North Uxbridge appeared to be a separate Census tract in the 1960 census with a population of 1882. In 2013, an Uxbridge DIY show, The Garage, with Steve Butler, went worldwide from Steve's garage in North Uxbridge.

The Samuel Taft House is a historic house at 87 Sutton Street in Uxbridge, Massachusetts. The main block of the 1+1⁄2 story timber-frame house was built in 1774, and is a typical local variant of Georgian styling, with a gambrel roof, central chimney, clapboard siding, and granite foundation. The house is notable for its association with Samuel Taft, who served in the American Revolutionary War, and hosted George Washington at this house in 1789.The house was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1983.

The S.A. Hall House is an historic house located at 147 North Main Street in Uxbridge, Massachusetts. It is a 2+1⁄2 story wood-frame structure, with a cross-gable roof, clapboard and wood shingle siding, and a granite foundation. A three-story square tower stands in a crook at the front of the house, topper by a pyramidal roof with a flared edge and bracketed eave. It has decorative cut shingle work in the gables and in bands between the levels. Its front porch, set in front of the tower, has a decorative bracketed frieze and turned posts. Built c. 1890, it is one of Uxbridge's finest Queen Anne houses. Its first documented owner (in 1898) was S. Alonzo Hall, publisher of the Uxbridge Compendium.On October 7, 1983, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places.

The Aaron Taft House is an historic house at 215 Hazel Street, in Uxbridge, Massachusetts. Built about 1749, it is one of five surviving gambrel-roofed 18th-century houses in the town. It is 1+1⁄2 stories in height, with a side-gabled gambrel roof, clapboard siding, and central chimney. The main facade is asymmetrical, with three window bays, one to the left of the entrance, which is off center, and is adorned with sidelight windows, pilasters, and a simple entablature. It was the birthplace in 1785 of Peter Rawson Taft I, the grandfather of President William Howard Taft,On October 7, 1983, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places.

The Benjamin Adams House is a historic house located at 85 North Main Street, in Uxbridge, Massachusetts. Probably built before 1792, it is a good quality example of Federal period architecture, built for a prominent local lawyer and businessman.
