Surrey Chapel, Southwark

Blackfriars was a short-lived railway station on the South Eastern Railway (SER) line, in the parish of Southwark Christchurch, between Charing Cross and London Bridge. It was opened in 1864 with the name Blackfriars but closed less than five years later when it was replaced by the station now called Waterloo East (originally named Waterloo). In 1886 the London, Chatham and Dover Railway (LCDR) opened a station on the north bank of the river called St. Paul's – this was renamed Blackfriars in 1937. The former entrance to the South Eastern Railway Blackfriars station under the railway bridge on Blackfriars Road itself is still clearly visible. In 2005 the bricked-up former street-level entrance and original wording were restored. At track level, widening of the viaduct on its north side is the only indication of its site. In July 2009 planning permission was granted for a café to be built over the entranceway to the station.

CentreComm, now known as the NMCC (Network Management Control Centre) is Transport for London's emergency control room for London Buses. CentreComm's primary purpose is to provide an emergency control centre for London Buses contracted bus network. It is co-located with Transport for London's LSTCC centre which control London's traffic lights and traffic flow. Should an incident require an emergency response such as road closures, accidents, robberies, theft, vandalism or assault; CentreComm would activate an emergency response such as calling the emergency services or diverting buses as appropriate. CentreComm was conceived in 1979 and consisted of a mere handful of people equipped with two-way radios and paper records. In 2013 they had constant radio contact with all 8500 buses on the network via the iBus radio system. Through GPS fitted to each of London's buses they can monitor their location at all times. CentreComm is in operation 24 hours a day 364 days a year, with Christmas Day being the only day it is closed. For bus drivers, conductors and passenger assistants their services are activated via the iBus system by initiating a code red (emergency) or code blue (information) call. For garage-based bus operator staff they are contacted via the telephone or by email.

Southwark is a London Underground station in the London Borough of Southwark at the corner of Blackfriars Road and The Cut. It is between Waterloo and London Bridge stations on the Jubilee line, and is in Travelcard Zone 1. It was opened on 20 November 1999 as part of the Jubilee Line Extension. The station is somewhat west of historic Southwark, which is served by Borough and London Bridge stations. Its entrance is across the road from the disused Blackfriars Road railway station. The original plan for the Extension did not include a station between those at Waterloo and London Bridge; Southwark station was added after lobbying by the local council, it is in fact sited right next to the borough's boundary with Lambeth at Joane Street. Although it is close to Waterloo, not near the Bankside attractions it was intended to serve, and its only National Rail interchange is to London Waterloo East main line station; the passenger usage matches those of other minor central stations. It does however get over twice the traffic of nearby Borough station, and around three times that of Lambeth North.

Southwark College is a further education college located in the London Borough of Southwark. The college at one time had seven sites; it is now based at a building on The Cut, opposite Southwark tube station. The college has been part of Newcastle College Group since 2017.

Nelson Square is a garden square located close to Southwark tube station in the London Borough of Southwark. It was laid out around 1807 as upmarket terraced housing and named after Admiral Horatio Nelson whose death during his victory at the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805 made him a national hero. It runs off Blackfriars Road to the west andUnion Street to the north, while Great Suffolk Street is located a little to the east. The railway running towards Blackfriars Station passes near the eastern end of the square on a viaduct. The square was developed on land owned by Sir Francis Wood, 2nd Baronet, and was most likely entirely designed by the architect Samuel Pepys Cockerell. The poet Percy Bysshe Shelley and his wife Mary Shelley lodged at 26 Nelson Square, which was later commemorated by a blue plaque until a German bombing raid in the Second World War destroyed the building. In 1884 the charitable Blackfriars Settlement was established in the square, at the home of Helen Gladstone. It moved to nearby Great Suffolk Street in 2010. Other notable residents have included Thomas Barnes, the editor of The Times, and the surgeon Charles Aldis.

Blackfriars Road is a road in Southwark, SE1. It runs between St George's Circus at the southern end and Blackfriars Bridge over the River Thames at the northern end, leading to the City of London. Halfway up on the west side is Southwark Underground station, on the corner with The Cut. Opposite is Palestra, a large new office building which houses the Surface transport division of Transport for London, which was formerly the headquarters of the London Development Agency. The road forms part of the A201. The road adjoins Stamford Street and Southwark Street at the northern end. Originally known as Surrey Street, the road was built in the 1760s as the south approach to Blackfriars Bridge, and was laid out by the bridge surveyor, Robert Mylne.From 2010 a number of major development schemes have transformed Blackfriars Road from the bridge to the south at St George's Circus and new buildings have replaced the post World War II offices with residential and hotel accommodation along its length especially at the junction with Stamford Street where major high rises have been erected.

Christchurch was a civil parish in the metropolitan area of London, England. It was located south of the River Thames straddling either side of Blackfriars Road. It originated as the manor of Paris Garden in the parish of St Margaret, Southwark. The parish of St Margaret was replaced by St Saviour in 1541 and then in 1670 the area was split off as a parish in its own right when Christ Church was constructed. It was prone to flooding and was not heavily built upon until after 1809. In 1855 the parish was included in the metropolitan area of London where local government was reformed. The parish was united with St Saviour to form part of the St Saviour's District. When the district was abolished in 1900 the parish became part of the Metropolitan Borough of Southwark. It was abolished as a civil parish in 1930. The area now forms the northwestern part of the London Borough of Southwark.

The Cut (formerly New Cut) is a street in London which runs between Waterloo Road in Lambeth and Blackfriars Road in Southwark, approximately parallel to the South Eastern Railway (England). The Old Vic theatre is at the western (Lambeth) end, and the more experimental Young Vic theatre halfway along on the other side. Lewisham Southwark College is sited on the south side of The Cut and at the eastern (Southwark) end is Southwark Underground station. Waterloo and Waterloo East stations are also nearby.

Christ Church, Southwark, is a church of the Anglican denomination situated on the west side of Blackfriars Road, London. At the time of the foundation there was no bridge at Blackfriars and so no major road connecting the area to the south or to the City. The current church was built in 1958, following total destruction of the previous building in 1941, during the London Blitz. It has been Grade II listed since 2010.

The Union Theatre is a fringe theatre situated in the borough of Southwark in London, England. It was established in 1998 by Sasha Regan, and has a reputation for staging musicals.

Poured Lines is a 2006 painting by the British painter Ian Davenport. It is the largest painting to be publicly displayed outdoors in the United Kingdom. It is situated under the rail bridge at the western end of Southwark Street in London SE1.

The Young Vic Theatre is a performing arts venue located on The Cut, near the South Bank, in the London Borough of Lambeth. The Young Vic was established by Frank Dunlop in 1970. Kwame Kwei-Armah has been Artistic Director since February 2018, succeeding David Lan.
