Briggswath

Woodlands Hall is a historic house in Aislaby, a village near Whitby in North Yorkshire, in England. The house was built for Henry Walker Yeoman in the late 18th century. Yeoman also laid out a picturesque landscape around the house. Yeoman died in 1800, following which the house was let to tenants. In 1901, the house was inherited by five sisters in the Yeoman family. They developed the gardens, and regularly opened them to the public. They also arranged for the house to be remodelled, the work being undertaken from 1919 to 1921, to designs by Walter Brierley. This remodelling included extensions on the north side of the house. The house was Grade II* listed in 1952. In 1958, the house was sold and became St Hilda's Preparatory School. The school undertook further alterations in 1960, including the addition of a dining room. The school closed in 1988 and the building became a nursing home, but in 1999 it was converted into 14 apartments. The house is built of stone, and has two storeys and an attic. It is two bays wide and five bays long, and has a long domestic wing to the left of the main house. Inside, many original features survive, including plasterwork and doors. The main staircase is curved in an oval stairwell.

Sleights is a railway station on the Esk Valley Line, which runs between Middlesbrough and Whitby via Nunthorpe. The station, situated 2 miles 78 chains (4.8 km) south-west of Whitby, serves the villages of Briggswath and Sleights in North Yorkshire, England. It is owned by Network Rail and managed by Northern Trains.

Pond House is a historic building in Aislaby, a village near Whitby in North Yorkshire, in England. The two-storey stone house was built between 1782 and 1789, probably by Francis Breckon. Breckon leased the house to Rebecca Boulby, who had a relationship with Breckon's son, which resulted in three children. The couple did not marry, and a court case led to the children inheriting the house, in lieu of maintenance payments. The house has a slate roof, and brick chimneystacks. It is five bays wide, with single-storey one-bay wings either side. Original features include the sash windows, and a Doric order doorcase with a fanlight above. Inside, there is a central entrance hall with curved staircase, two main reception rooms, a kitchen and a garden room, along with six bedrooms and two bathrooms. The house was Grade II* listed in 1969.

St John's Chapel is a ruined Anglican chapel in Sleights, a village in North Yorkshire, in England. The building was constructed in about 1260, as a chapel of ease to St Mary's Church, Whitby. It was commissioned by Roger, Abbot of Whitby. It lies on a hill above the village, which proved to be an inconvenient location for parishioners. The chapel remained in use until 1767, when St John's Church, Sleights was constructed closer to the village centre. In 1772, it had a thatched roof, a door and three blocked windows in the south wall, and a window in the west wall. The ruins were grade II listed in 1969. The chapel ruins are of sandstone on a chamfered plinth, and consist of a continuous nave and chancel. The main surviving remnant is part of the west wall, containing the remains of a chamfered window opening, and the lower parts of the north and east walls. The building is roughly 40 feet (12 m) by 18 feet (5.5 m), and its walls are 2.5 feet (0.76 m) thick.

Aislaby ( AYZ-əl-bi) is a village and civil parish in North Yorkshire, England. It is situated near the town of Whitby on the northern slopes of Eskdale just off the A171.

Sleights ( SLITES) is a village in North Yorkshire, England. Located in the Esk Valley in the postal region of Whitby, the village is part of the civil parish of Eskdaleside cum Ugglebarnby and the borough of Scarborough. Sleights lies along the steep main A169 road that runs north to south between Whitby and Malton via Pickering across the North York Moors. At the bottom of the village, the road crosses the Esk Valley Railway, allowing access to Sleights railway station. The road crosses the River Esk on a high bridge, opened on 26 January 1937. The road continues up the hill to reach the A171 Whitby to Middlesbrough trunk road. At the top of the village is Blue Bank. Due east of the village is the hamlet of Iburndale. Due to road accidents, Blue Bank, with a gradient of 1 in 4 (25%), has an escape lane of soft sand. The Horticultural & Industrial Society show has been held each year since 1880. Since 2006 the show has been held on the sports field, with classes for produce, fruit, flowers vegetables, crafts, cake decorating, photography, flower arranging etc. Additional attractions include a bouncy castle, face painting, tombola and a fun dog show. The infamous Victorian forger Edward Simpson was born here in 1815.

St Margaret's Church is the parish church of Aislaby, a village near Whitby, in North Yorkshire, in England. There was a Mediaeval chapel in Aislaby, which in 1732 was replaced by a church, a plain, rectangular building. This church was replaced in 1896 by a new church, designed by Edward H. Smales. The church of 1732 survived, and was later converted into a parish hall. The current church is built of stone, and has a roof of concrete tiles. It has a cruciform plan, with a chancel in the form of an apse. The tower is over the north transept, and the porch and vestry are also on the north side. The tower has battlements, and a stair turret. The west window, of stepped lancets, has stained glass by W. F. Curtis, Ward and Hughes, as do some smaller lancet windows, while other windows have glass by Shrigley and Hunt. The choir stalls and communion rail are both made of oak. Both the current church and the parish hall are Grade II listed.

St John's Church is an Anglican church in Sleights, a village in North Yorkshire, in England. The mediaeval St John's Chapel, Sleights, was replaced by a new building, further down the hill, in 1767. In 1848, it was described as a "very elegant structure". However, the Georgian church was demolished and replaced with a new building, which was consecrated on 20 September 1895. The church was designed by Ewan Christian in the Early English style. It was grade II listed in 2005. The church is built of Grosmont sandstone, with a roof of Westmorland slate. It consists of a nave, a north aisle, a north transept, a chancel, and a northeast tower with a plain parapet and a pyramidal roof. The windows are lancets, and the east window is a stepped tripled lancet. The stained glass was designed by Charles Eamer Kempe. Inside, there is a hammerbeam roof, oak panelling to the lower parts of the walls, and an oak reredos and altar. In the churchyard is the grade II listed Coates Memorial, commemorating members of the Coates family. It constructed of sandstone with a square plan, and consists of a concave obelisk, standing on a moulded base decorated with acanthus. On the sides are memorial panels surrounded by rinceaux in low relief.

Aislaby Quarry is a sandstone quarry in the village of Aislaby, near to Whitby in North Yorkshire, England. The quarry produces sandstone which has been exported through Whitby to London and South East England.

Eskdaleside cum Ugglebarnby is a civil parish in North Yorkshire, England, comprising the two villages of Sleights and Ugglebarnby. According to the 2011 UK census, Eskdaleside cum Ugglebarnby parish had a population of 2,238, a reduction on the 2001 UK census figure of 2,252. All Saints' Church, Ugglebarnby lies in the village. From 1974 to 2023 it was in Scarborough district.

Newholm-cum-Dunsley is a civil parish in the Scarborough district of North Yorkshire, England. According to the 2011 UK census, Newholm-cum-Dunsley parish had a population of 192, a decrease on the 2001 UK census figure of 213.

All Saints' Church is an Anglican church in Ugglebarnby, a village in North Yorkshire, in England. A chapel was constructed in Ugglebarnby in the 12th century. It is traditionally said to have been built in 1137, by Nicholas, Abbot of Whitby. The chapel was demolished in 1870 and a new church was completed in 1872, to a design by Charles Noel Armfield. It is broadly in the 14th-century Gothic style, but incorporates some stones from the old chapel. It was grade II listed in 1989. The church is built of cream and red brick banding, faced in sandstone, with a roof of tile and pantile. It consists of a nave, a chancel with a south organ chamber and vestry, and a northwest tower. The tower has two stages, diagonal buttresses, a west doorway with a double-chamfered surround, a north window of three stepped lancets, two-light bell openings with pointed arches, a chamfered parapet band, and a plain parapet. Below the east window is a re-set carved stone. Inside the church is a stone reredos depicting the Last Supper, carved by Matthew Noble. There is a highly decorative carved pulpit and lectern, and a stone font, with an octagonal timber cover. There are carved pews, a brass altar rail depicting heraldic beasts, and a hammerbeam roof. There is much stained glass, described by Historic England as "pretty but unremarkable".
