Harwich

Dovercourt is a seaside town and former civil parish, now in the parish of Harwich, in the Tendring district, in the county of Essex, England. It is older than its smaller but better-known neighbour, the port of Harwich, and appears in the Domesday Book of 1086. Today the towns are contiguous. In 1921 the parish had a population of 7695.Dovercourt is a seaside resort which offers shops and cafes for visitors and residents. The main shopping area is The High Street, with shops from independents to the national chains. The town is served by Dovercourt railway station.

Harwich and Dovercourt High School is a secondary school and sixth form with academy status, located in Harwich in the English county of Essex. It was named the Sir Anthony Deane School until 1974, and was then known as the Harwich School. The school faced controversy in 2006 when parents campaigned to remove existing Headteacher, Jacky Froggat, over concerns regarding falling standards. She was replaced by Nigel Mountford, who had been serving as the acting head teacher of the Harwich School, Under his leadership the school was transformed into a positive learning atmosphere with a new code of conduct and praise scheme for pupils who perform well, his appointment came just one week after the school was saved from going into special measures, OFSTED reported the school had shown significant improvement. In 2011 the school relaunched, changing its name from "The Harwich School" to "Harwich and Dovercourt High School" Following a period of ill health, Nigel Mountford retired and was succeeded by Headteacher Robert Garrett in 2014. In July 2016 following an OFSTED inspection the school was given a Good rating.The school was converted to academy status in August 2012, and became a member of the Sigma Multi Academy Trust on 1 June 2017. The school continues to coordinate with Essex County Council for admissions. The school had a House system, with coloured ties to show membership of the houses, but has abolished it and is now using coloured ties to show membership of each year group. Year 7 has green striped ties, Year 8 has red striped ties, Year 9 has orange striped ties, Year 10 has blue striped ties, and Year 11 has yellow striped ties.

Harwich & Parkeston Football Club is an English football club based in Harwich, Essex. The club are currently members of the Eastern Counties League Division One North and play at the Royal Oak ground.

Parkeston is a North Sea port village in Essex, England, situated on the south bank of the River Stour about one mile (1.6 km) up-river from Harwich. In 2018 it had an estimated population of 932.

Dovercourt railway station is on the Mayflower Line, a branch of the Great Eastern Main Line, in the East of England, serving the seaside town of Dovercourt, Essex. It is 70 miles 19 chains (113.04 km) from London Liverpool Street and is situated between Harwich International to the west and Harwich Town to the east. Its three-letter station code is DVC. The station is currently operated by Abellio Greater Anglia, which also runs all trains serving the station.

Harwich International railway station is a railway station on the Mayflower Line, a branch of the Great Eastern Main Line, the station serves Harwich International Port in Essex, England. It is 68 miles 72 chains (110.88 km) from London Liverpool Street, between Wrabness to the west and Dovercourt to the east. Its three-letter station code, HPQ, derives from its original name, Harwich Parkeston Quay.The station is operated by Greater Anglia, which also runs all trains serving the station. It is the eastern terminus in England of the Dutchflyer service between London and Amsterdam.

Harwich International Port is a North Sea seaport in Essex, England, and one of the Haven ports. It lies on the south bank of the River Stour one mile upstream from the town of Harwich, opposite the Port of Felixstowe. The port was formerly known as Parkeston Quay.

HMS Badger was a shore establishment of the Royal Navy on the east coast of the United Kingdom. She was commissioned on 13 September 1939 was the flagship of the headquarters of the Flag Officer in Charge (FOIC), Harwich who was responsible to Commander-in-Chief, The Nore, and was decommissioned on 21 October 1946, although the Operations Room remained as the Emergency Port Control for the Harwich area. The site was Parkeston Quay, now Harwich International Port, and the bunker lies under Hamilton House, currently an occupational health centre, close to the entrance to Harwich International Port, a few miles west of Harwich.

Shotley Pier is a disused 540 feet (160 m) long railway pier in Shotley Gate, Shotley, Suffolk. Built in 1894 by Frederick Hervey, 3rd Marquess of Bristol the structure was used to service a ferry across the River Stour to Harwich, Essex. The ferry carried mail and coal as well as munitions and sailors for the nearby HMS Ganges Royal Navy establishment. During the First World War the structure was used to unload German prisoners of war captured at sea and after the war to moor captured German submarines. The pier was later used by fishermen but has been derelict since the late 1980s. In 2018 the pier was purchased by the Shotley Heritage Community Charitable Benefit Society who have since restored the first 30 metres (98 ft) of the structure.

Bath Side Battery was built in 1811 to cover the anchorage of the port of Harwich, Essex, England as part of the same complex as the Redoubt, armed with 3 x 24 pdr (11 kg) cannon. The battery was allowed to decay, and after 1990 excavations is marked out on the ground in front of the Anchor pub, Stour Road. This Public House has since been demolished. As of April 2019, the land is still unused, with future plans as yet unknown.

The Harwich Mayflower Heritage Centre (formerly Project) is a museum and charitable community project whose main goal is to establish a "legacy for Essex", both through constructing a full-scale replica of the famous Mayflower ship which transported a hundred Pilgrim Fathers from England to America in 1620, and through celebrating the history and heritage of Harwich, a town in the south-east of England.
