Tawstock

The Church of St John the Baptist is the Anglican parish church for the village of Bishop's Tawton in Devon. The church has been a Grade I listed building since 1965 and comes under the Diocese of Exeter.

Bishop's Tawton is a village and civil parish in the North Devon district of Devon, England. It is in the valley of the River Taw, about three miles south of Barnstaple. According to the 2001 census the parish had a population of 1,176.

Tawstock Tower (also known as Tawstock Castle and The Tower) is a folly building dating from the 18th-century that stands in the village of Tawstock in North Devon. It has been listed Grade II on the National Heritage List for England (NHLE) since February 1965. The NHLE listing describes the building as a "Folly, built in form of look-out tower". It is constructed from stone rubble and has Gothic style windows openings on each stage of the tower. It was built in the 18th-century The tower has views over nearby Barnstaple and the Taw Valley. In the 1986 first edition of their book Follies, Grottoes & Garden Buildings, Gwyn Headley and Wim Meulenkamp stated that the tower had been observed in 1954 "but no trace now remains". Headley and Meulenkamp apologised for this earlier error in the 1999 edition of the book, having been contacted in the intervening years by numerous readers who had observed the tower from the nearby railway line to Barnstaple. It was bought by a property developer in 1988 and was renovated as a private residence over 14 years. Local stone was used from derelict buildings and a Great Hall was created. In September 2002 it was on sale for £625,000. It had been renovated as a private family home over the previous 14 years. It sold for more than £900,000. It was put up for sale with Knight Frank in 2024 for £1.5 million.

The Church of St John the Baptist on South Street in Barnstaple in Devon is the Anglican parish church for the Newport area of the town. The church comes under the Diocese of Exeter. In 1829 a church was built on the site of a former medieval chapel as a chapel of ease for the community of Newport within the parish of Bishop's Tawton. The parish became independent in 1847, at which time the church building was in urgent need of repair. The current building was completed in 1882. The nave, chancel, north aisle, vestries and the north porch are built of local limestone. In the 1960s a church hall was built adjacent to the church and linked to it by a covered walkway.On the north wall of the church is a memorial to the men of the parish who lost their lives during World War II. The choir vestry, a new bell and windows on the north side of the church were added in 1929 in commemoration of the church's centenary, with celebrations being led by Lord William Cecil, Bishop of Exeter.

Rock Park is an urban park in Barnstaple, Devon, England. The park was donated to the public by William Frederick Rock and opened in 1879. It has a number of listed structures including an obelisk at the entrance to the park, a lodge and a range of historic lamp posts.

Barnstaple railway station (Barnstaple Victoria Road railway station from 1949) was the western terminus of the Devon and Somerset Railway. It was situated on the south eastern side of Barnstaple in Devon, England. It was served by passenger trains from 1873 until 1960, and by freight trains until 1970.

Holy Trinity is an Anglican parish church for Barnstaple in Devon. Dating from 1867 with an earlier tower from 1843 to 1845, the church comes under the Diocese of Exeter and has been a Grade II* listed building since 1981.

Barnstaple railway station is the northern terminus of the Tarka Line and serves the town of Barnstaple, Devon. It is 39 miles 75 chains (64.3 km) from Exeter Central and 211.25 miles (339.97 km) from London Waterloo. It is managed by Great Western Railway, which also operates the passenger service. It opened in 1854 but, from 1874 until 1970, it was known as Barnstaple Junction railway station, as it was the junction between lines to Ilfracombe, Bideford, Taunton and Exeter.

Penrose's Almshouses are 17th-century almshouses in Litchdon Street, Barnstaple, in Devon, England, built in memory of John Penrose (1575–1624), a merchant and Mayor of Barnstaple. They have been a Grade I listed building since 1951.
