Müritz (district)

The Müritz (German: [ˈmyːʁɪts] ; from Slavic "little sea") is a lake in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, northern Germany. Its area is 117 km2 (45 sq mi), which makes it the second largest lake in Germany (after Lake Constance) and the largest lake located entirely within German territory. Its maximum depth is 31 metres (102 ft). It is fed and drained by the river Elde. Part of the Müritz and adjacent forests and wetlands are protected by the Müritz National Park. The former Müritz district was named after the lake. The biggest towns bordering the lake are Waren (Müritz) and Röbel, both major centres of tourism in the Mecklenburg Lake District. Lake Müritz is part of the Müritz-Elde Waterway, a Class I federal waterway. It is managed by the Lauenburg Waterway and Shipping Authority (Wasser- und Schifffahrtsamt Lauenburg).

Ludorf is a village and a former municipality in the Mecklenburgische Seenplatte district, in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Germany. Since May 2019, it is part of the new municipality Südmüritz.

Südmüritz is a municipality in the Mecklenburgische Seenplatte district, in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Germany. It was created with effect from 26 May 2019 by the merger of the former municipalities of Ludorf and Vipperow. Its name refers to its location on the south side of the lake Müritz.

Wienpietschseen is a group of lakes in Mecklenburgische Seenplatte, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Germany. At an elevation of 62.5 m, its surface area is 0.025 km².

Burgwall Island (German: Burgwallinsel) is an island in the Feisneck lake in the southeast part of the town of Waren (Müritz) in the German district of Mecklenburgische Seenplatte. The name means "castle mound" or "motte". Burgwall Island lies in a small lake, which has an area of 1.94 km². Its name is derived from a castle on the island, only remnants of which remain. It was a typical island castle from the Slavic era. As finds of pottery have shown, the site was already settled during the Old Slavic period of the 7th and 8th centuries and continued to exist until the 12th century. Finds of early German pottery indicated that the island continued to be used after Christianity had been introduced in the Middle Ages. Whether the castle still existed then is not known. The castle site lay in the territory of the Müritz tribe that, during the 10th century, periodically belonged to the Lutici federation. Today the remains of a rampart may still be made out in the southern part of the wooded island. It looks as if most of it was carried away in the preceding centuries.

The Binnenmüritz is a lake in the Müritz National Park, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Germany. At an elevation of 62.4 m, its surface area is 0.184 km². It is really a bay of Germany's largest inland lake, Lake Müritz.

The Feisnecksee or Feisneck is a lake on the southeastern perimeter of the town of Waren in Mecklenburgische Seenplatte district in the German state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. It lies at an elevation of 62.1 metres and its surface area is 1.94 km². The Feisnecksee is joined to the Binnenmüritz to the northwest by a very narrow, shallow and unnavigable ditch. The road runs over a small bridge here that is only wide enough for large vehicles to pass in one direction at a time. The land bridge is about 150 metres wide at this point. The lake is a typical, glacial tunnel valley lake and is divided by a neck and the larger Burgwall Island into a north and south basins. It is about 3,100 metres long and 600 metres wide. Near the southern half is the Waren quarter of Damerow. The lakeshore is completely surrounded by a belt of reed and is also wooded in the south. In the north half of the lake is a bathing area. Fishing is only allowed by special permit because the lake lies in the national park.

Wolfskuhlsee is a lake in the Mecklenburgische Seenplatte district in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Germany. At an elevation of 63.8 m, its surface area is 0.039 km².
