Hunter Mountain (New York)

The Hunter Mountain Fire Tower is located on the summit of the eponymous mountain, second highest of the Catskill Mountains in the U.S. state of New York. It was the first of 23 fire lookout towers built by the state in the region, and the next-to-last of the five still standing to be abandoned. Today it remains a popular attraction for hikers climbing the mountain. After it fell into disrepair in the 1990s and was recommended for removal by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC), which had operated the tower, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1997. Local enthusiasts were able to raise money, matched by DEC, to restore the tower and adjacent observer's cabin to serve as a museum, with volunteers in the cab on some weekends. Panoramic views of not only the mountains but the adjacent Hudson Valley, Massachusetts, Connecticut and sometimes southwestern Vermont are available from it. Likewise, it can be seen from many of the surrounding mountains, the village of Hunter and the upper slopes of the ski area. It is the highest fire tower still standing in the state and the second-highest in the entire Northeast.

Southwest Hunter Mountain (Leavitt Peak) is a subpeak of Hunter Mountain, located in Greene County, New York. It is considered one of the Catskills' High Peaks in its own right, because of its separation from the main summit, and its topographic prominence. Hunter Mountain is named after John Hunter, who also gave his name to the town of Hunter. Southwest Hunter is part of the Devil's Path range of the Catskill Mountains. SW Hunter is flanked to the northeast by the main summit of Hunter, and to the west faces West Kill Mountain across 800-foot-deep (240 m) Diamond Notch. It is considered a bushwhack, as there are no official trails leading to its summit, in the midst of a dense montane boreal forest of red spruce and balsam fir. Attempts to climb from Diamond Notch, the closest approach of a maintained trail, have led to the creation of a maze of herd paths on the level area west of the mountain's summit, none of which leads to it and many of which dead-end. Hikers have instead been following the bed of a rail line used by a 19th century logging company that begins just off the Devil's Path, 0.1 miles (160 m) west of the Devil's Acre Lean-to, at a small rock cairn. It traverses the ridge at roughly 3,500 ft (1,100 m) for three-quarters of a mile (1.21 km) where another herd path turns uphill to the peak (This upward turn is easy to miss, there are several other junctions prior to it. It is only marked by an arrow scratched onto a nearby rock; it has in the past been marked by another cairn). The summit canister is in a small clearing. Southwest Hunter stands within the watershed of the Hudson River, which drains into New York Bay. The north side of SW Hunter drains into the headwaters of the West Kill, thence into Schoharie Creek, the Mohawk River, and the Hudson River. The southeast slopes of SW Hunter drain into Myrtle Brook, thence into Stony Clove Creek, Esopus Creek, and the Hudson River. The southwest side of SW Hunter drains into Hollow Brook, thence into Stony Clove Creek. Southwest Hunter is within the Hunter Mountain Wild Forest of the Catskill Park of New York's Forest Preserve. Southwest Hunter is unnamed in the GNIS database; there is an effort underway to get the peak named Leavitt Peak in memory of Bill & Elinore Leavitt, two of the founders of the Catskill 3500 club.

Colonels Chair is a mountain located in Greene County, New York southwest of Hunter, New York. Located south is Hunter Mountain and to the west is Rusk Mountain. Colonels Chair drains north into Schoharie Creek via Taylor Hollow and Shanty Hollow.

Diamond Notch is a wind gap located between West Kill Mountain and Southwest Hunter Mountain in the Catskills of New York. The south side of Diamond Notch drains through Diamond Notch Hollow via Hollow Tree Brook to Stony Clove Creek, thence to Esopus Creek and the Hudson River. Water from the north side also reaches the Hudson, but via a longer route—first the West Kill, then Schoharie Creek to the Mohawk, the Hudson's largest tributary.

Diamond Notch Falls is a waterfall located on the West Kill, east of Spruceton in the Hunter-West Kill Wilderness in Greene County, New York. Diamond Notch Falls is a side by side waterfall, both being about 15 feet (4.6 m) in height. The Diamond Notch Trail passes Diamond Notch Falls. The trail begins at Spruceton Road and travels south through Diamond Notch, and descends down to connect with Diamond Notch Road, north of Lanesville. At 1 mile from Sprucetown Road, the trail passes Diamond Notch Falls and then the intersection with the Devil's Path. Then at 2.2 miles, the trail passes the Diamond Notch wind gap.

Notch Lake is an artificial lake in Edgewood, New York, in the Town of Hunter in the Catskill Mountains. It is located near the Stony Clove Notch, and is located near the edge of the Devil's Tombstone Campsite, bordering New York State Route 214. There is also a parking lot near the shore. It is the beginning of the Stony Clove Creek. One thing unusual about it is that it is one of the few places in the Catskills where there is a patch of Boreal Forest growing below 3,000 feet above sea level. A fire occurred near the northern shore in the 1990s. Camping is not allowed at the day-use area next to the parking lot and Pond, however, camping is allowed a short walk South along Route 214 at the Devil's Tombstone Campground.

Devils Tombstone or the Devil's Tombstone Park, is a park which is named for the large rock which lay at the center of the park, which is located in Greene County, New York. The park is part of the Catskill Mountain range, and located north-northeast of Edgewood. Plateau Mountain, is located east of Devils Tombstone, Sugarloaf Mountain, is located southeast, and Hunter Mountain is directly west. The Devil's Tombstone is one of the oldest parks in the Catskill Forest Preserve.

Hunter is a town located in Greene County, New York, United States. The population was 3,035 at the time of the 2020 census. The town contains two villages, one named Hunter on the west, and the second called Tannersville, as well as a number of hamlets such as Haines Falls, Platte Clove, Lanesville and Edgewood. Additionally, there are three residential parks location within town limits: Onteora Park, Twilight Park and Elka Park. The town is on the southern border of Greene County and abuts the towns of Woodstock and Saugerties, located in Ulster County.

Hunter Synagogue is a historic Jewish synagogue on Main Street in Hunter, Greene County, New York. It was constructed between 1909 and 1914 and is a 2+1⁄2-story, three-by-seven-bay, Queen Anne–inspired building. Also on the property is a shed built about 1910.It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1999.

Harry Fischel House, also known as Fairlawn, is a historic home located at Hunter in Greene County, New York. It was built about 1840 and substantially enlarged in 1904. It is a 2+1⁄2-story, five-by-two-bay, Queen Anne–style dwelling with a 2-story, eight-by-one-bay rear wing. It features a 2-story, engaged corner tower and single-story verandah.It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2000.

IOOF Hall, also known as Lockwood Lodge No. 653, is a historic Independent Order of Odd Fellows building located at Hunter in Greene County, New York. It was built in 1917 and is a 2+1⁄2-story, three-by-six-bay, wood-frame gable-roofed structure. It was used as a fraternal hall until the late 20th century.It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2002.

Hunter is a village in Greene County, New York, United States. The population was 429 at the 2020 census. The village is in the northwestern part of the town of Hunter on New York State Route 23A.
