The Lake Superior National Estuarine Research Reserve includes land and water areas along the St. Louis River and Lake Superior in Douglas County, in the northwest corner of Wisconsin, United States. It is one of 29 National Estuarine Research Reserves. The Reserve is operated as a program of the Natural Resources Institute of the University of Wisconsin-Madison Division of Extension. It has an area of 16,697 acres (6,757 ha), and was designated in 2010.

Oliver is a village in Douglas County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 423 at the 2020 census. Oliver is located 5 miles (8.0 km) west of the city of Superior and 0.3 miles (0.48 km) east of Gary – New Duluth, Duluth, Minnesota.

Pokegama Bay is a small bay in northwestern Douglas County, Wisconsin, United States, which the St Louis River flows. It makes up part of the border between Minnesota and Wisconsin. Pokegama River, named after the bay, flows into this bay. Artist Eastman Johnson built a small cabin at Pokegama Bay while living in Wisconsin.

The Duluth Works was an industrial steel and cement manufacturing complex located in Duluth, Minnesota, United States, in operation 1915 to 1987. The complex was operated by the United States Steel Corporation. Officially, the plant's purpose was to supply the growing Midwest with steel finished products. Unofficially, they were built as part of a "gentleman's agreement" between U.S. Steel and the State of Minnesota to not impose hefty iron ore taxes on U.S. Steel in exchange for a fully integrated steel plant within Minnesota, whose mines furnished 80% of the ore to U.S. Steel. The combined works of the steel and cement plant were the largest employers in Duluth and the fourth largest industrial complex in Minnesota.

The Oliver Bridge is a bridge across the Saint Louis River. It was constructed in 1910 as a railway bridge by the Interstate Transfer Railway Company, a Wisconsin corporation, under special federal authorization from the 60th United States Congress. A lower deck carrying road traffic was constructed in 1917 It connects the Gary – New Duluth neighborhood in Duluth, Minnesota with the village of Oliver, Wisconsin. The bridge is 1,889 feet (576 m) long and is principally of steel truss construction. The upper deck carries a single track rail line and a lower deck carries the road connecting Wisconsin Highway 105 to Minnesota State Highway 39.The upper deck was built to allow a streetcar line to be constructed from Gary–New Duluth to south Superior connecting the Duluth and Superior streetcar systems. The line was never built and the systems were connected across the Twin Ports Harbor. On the Oliver side, a section of the bridge was built to swing, allowing passage of large vessels despite the river only being navigable for a few miles upstream of the bridge. Only one vessel is ever thought to have used this facility, a ferry excursion boat operating between the Duluth harbor and the Fond du Lac neighborhood of Duluth. The ferry service ceased in the 1930s and the swing section has not operated since. The road deck was originally a wooden deck. Modernization came in 2000 when both states' transportation departments (WisDOT and Mn/DOT) cooperated with the Duluth, Missabe and Iron Range Railway to jointly fund a reconstruction of the roadway surface, which is constructed of a stronger steel with a reinforced concrete deck. A weight restriction, which was lowered to one ton as the road deck deteriorated, was then lifted. A pedestrian walkway atop the railway deck fell into disrepair and is no longer usable. The Oliver Bridge is owned by the Canadian National Railway.

Morgan Park is a neighborhood in Duluth, Minnesota, United States. Arbor Street/88th Avenue West serves as a main route in the community. Grand Avenue is nearby. The area was first developed for worker housing to support the U.S. Steel plant known as the Duluth Works. It was developed along the Saint Louis River.

The Lake View Store was the first modern indoor mall built in the United States . It was built in 1915, and held its grand opening on July 20, 1916. The architect was Dean & Dean from Chicago and the building contractor was George H. Lounsberry from Duluth. The mall building cost $75,000 to construct, a large sum of money in 1915.The mall is located in the U.S. Steel former company town of Morgan Park, now the present day neighborhood of Morgan Park in the city of Duluth, Minnesota, on the northeast corner of Edward Street and 88th Avenue. The building is two stories with a full basement and shops were originally located on all three levels. All of the stores were located within the interior of the mall with some shops being accessible from both inside and out. The Duluth News Tribune once reported that the "Lake View Store is the most modern store in Duluth" and "Every business concern in Morgan Park will be housed in a commodious building about 200 feet (61 m) long and 100 feet (30 m) wide". This mall appeared in the November 1916 issue of The Minnesotan and the June 1918 issue of American Architect. The mall's original business hours were Monday through Saturday from 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM. It was estimated that 10,000 people toured the mall on its opening day. The first floor had a pharmacy and a department store with groceries, a butcher shop, clothing, hardware, furniture, and a general store. The second floor had a bank, dentist office, barber shop, hair salon, hat shop, billiard room, and auditorium. The basement had a shoe store and an ice making plant which made eight tons of ice per day for the mall and for Morgan Park residents. The mall building and the department store were owned and operated by U.S. Steel, however the pharmacy, bank, barber shop, hair salon, and dentist were among the privately run businesses. In September 1929, the mall's hardware store took first prize in the United States and third prize in the world, in a window display competition. This was out of 11,672 total entries. The window display featured a camping scene with a cabin. It was created by hardware store manager Walter B. Neipp.The 1935 Duluth city directory lists the following businesses in the Lake View Store: Lake View Lodge, Morgan Park Company Real Estate, Lake View Department Store, Morgan Park Market, Dahl Barber Shop, Doctors Ryan & Elias, Schaefer Dentistry, Gjessing Tailor Shop, Tahtinen Shoe Rebuilder, and Park Pharmacy. The interior of the mall was later remodeled so that each store was only accessible from the outside. This allowed for more room on the second floor which originally had a balcony and walkway that ran most of the length of the building. The mall still exists today and houses a hair salon, offices, retail space, and apartments. It is located by the bank in Morgan park

The Pokegama River is a 26.3-mile-long (42.3 km) river in Wisconsin and Minnesota in the United States. It is a tributary of the Saint Louis River, joining it in the western part of the city of Superior, Wisconsin.

Work People's College (Finnish: Työväen Opisto) was a radical labor college (a type of a folk high school governed by the worker's movement) established in Smithville (Duluth), then a suburb of Duluth, Minnesota, in 1907 by the Finnish Socialist Federation of the Socialist Party of America. School administrators and faculty were sympathetic to the syndicalist left wing of the Finnish labor movement and the institution came into the orbit of the Industrial Workers of the World during the 1914-1915 factional battle that split the Finnish Federation. The school ceased operation in 1941. In 2012 the Twin Cities branch of the Industrial Workers of the World relaunched Work People's College on a limited basis as a summer training camp for the group's activists and organizers.

The McDougall Duluth Shipbuilding Company was a large-scale wartime ship manufacturing shipyard, located at the city of Riverside, near Duluth. McDougall Duluth Shipbuilding was at 110 Spring Street, Duluth, Minnesota, now the site of the West Duluth's Spirit Lake Marina. The shipyard was located on St. Louis River Estuary at western part of Lake Superior. McDougall Duluth Shipbuilding Company was founded by Alexander McDougall (1845-1923) in 1917 to build ships for World War I. McDougall Duluth Shipbuilding Company and the Superior Shipbuilding Company (now Fraser Shipyards) were called the Twin Ports shipbuilding industry of Minnesota and Wisconsin. Once built the ships can travel to the Atlantic Ocean through the Great Lakes and the Saint Lawrence Seaway.

Riverside is a neighborhood in Duluth, Minnesota, United States. Grand Avenue, Riverside Drive, and Spring Street are three of the main routes in the community. The neighborhood is located along the banks of the Saint Louis River and Spirit Lake. The Willard Munger Bicycle Trail passes through the neighborhood. The 1918 McDougall Duluth Shipbuilding Company was located there on Spring Street, now the site of the Spirit Lake Marina.

Gary – New Duluth is a neighborhood in Duluth, Minnesota, United States. Although called Gary–New Duluth by most people in the area, and even identified by local traffic signs as being so named, they are two separate neighborhood communities. Commonwealth Avenue (State Highway 23), Becks Road (County Road 3), and Gary Street are three of the main routes in the community. The neighborhood of Gary begins as one enters under the railroad bridge on Commonwealth Avenue and ends at Gary Builders Supply. Gary contains most of the business district of the two neighborhoods, such as the Minit Mart and Milk House areas. The neighborhood of New Duluth begins just past Gary Builders Supply, where an old railroad line once crossed Commonwealth Avenue and continues to the Boy Scout Landing at the very end of Commonwealth Avenue. This railroad track is still visible under the sign for Gary Builders Supply. The major tenants of New Duluth are the Minneapolis Electric Company's steel foundry and Stowe Elementary School. Both neighborhoods are historically linked to the once vast U.S. Steel plant of the Duluth Works which was once located outside of Gary and in between Morgan Park. Gary was named for Elbert Henry Gary, founding chairman of U.S. Steel, who was also the namesake of Gary, Indiana. Both neighborhoods experienced a major decline in business and population when the areas industries folded, although much of the ethnic heritage of the communities still thrives to this day. Sargent Creek flows through at the western edge of the neighborhood. It serves as a boundary line between Gary–New Duluth and the Fond du Lac neighborhood. The Oliver Bridge across the Saint Louis River and McCuen Street (MN 39) together connect the neighborhood of Gary–New Duluth with the nearby village of Oliver, Wisconsin.
